33. Impasse
Ikyn steps beside her, his presence a steady force against the storm they face. "It is time." Eira nods, inhaling deeply. Without another word, they shift, their bodies melting into their dragon forms, wings unfurling as they push off the ground. The cavern ceiling parts for them, revealing the molten river that awaits. They do not hesitate. They dive straight into the glowing lava, the molten rock swallowing them whole. Heat sears her scales, but she presses on, trusting her instincts. A few heartbeats later, they break through the surface, bursting into the open sky above the volcano.
The cool night air rushes over her, a stark contrast to the inferno they left behind. Ikyn lets out a deep roar beside her, and she joins him, their cries echoing across the mountains. They turn east, their wings beating a furious rhythm as they fly toward home.
Below them, the land sprawls in shadow and silver light, the rivers cutting through the valleys like veins of molten glass. Her mind is still fixed on Iliyana’s final words. I am the key. The truth of it weighs on her. Whatever it means, she knows there is no turning back.
The kingdom looms before them, its walls bathed in moonlight. They descend, landing within the palace courtyard where three figures already await them. King Savea, King Sarkis, and King Lyos stand side by side, their faces unreadable but their eyes sharp with expectation.
Eira shifts back into her human form, Ikyn doing the same beside her. "We must prepare our people," she announces without preamble. "Ikyn and I must face the Dragon Lord."
King Sarkis frowns. "But you said he was nothing more than smoke."
"He is," Ikyn confirms, his voice grave. "But smoke can find a way to burn again if given the right kindling. We must ensure he cannot be resurrected."
King Lyos crosses his arms, his gaze unreadable. "And if he does?"
Eira meets his stare without flinching. "Then we will end him before he has the chance."
Silence falls, thick with understanding. The battle ahead is not one of armies—it is one of fate. The kings exchange a glance before King Savea nods. "Then let us do what we must. Our people will be ready."
Ikyn grips her hand, his warmth anchoring her. They have prepared for this moment. They will not fail. The Dragon Lord’s shadow lingers on the horizon, but they will meet it head-on. And this time, they will end it for good.
The morning sun rises with a blood-orange glow, streaking the sky in hues of fire and gold. The weight of duty presses against Eira's shoulders, but she does not yield to it. Instead, she dons her gown, as red as fire, glittering like a thousand flames. The fabric clings to her skin, flowing and shifting with every movement, echoing the power she feels surging within her. There is no weapon, no blade to rely on—only her strength and the magic coursing through her veins.
Ikyn stands beside her, his own preparations complete. "The kings will manage their people, but this fight is ours alone."
She nods, adjusting her gown. "Then let us waste no time."
They take to the skies once more, their wings cutting through the morning air. "*To the Abyss*?" Ikyn’s voice threads through her thoughts.
"*To the Abyss*," she affirms. "*Let us hope he still rests as nothing more than some glimmering mist.*"
He does not argue, but she sees the hesitation in his eyes. "*Ikyn,*" she narrows her eyes at him. "*You still do not believe what I saw*?"
"*He was in your head. Now he is not*," Ikyn huffs, casting his gaze away from hers. Together, they press forward, the sky stretching endlessly before them. They land atop a crumbling ridge, their talons sinking into the brittle stone. Eira’s chest tightens as she scans the land below. The air thrums with something familiar, something wrong.
Shifting into his human forms, Ikyn asks, "Do you feel it?" His eyes narrow.
She does. A whisper on the wind, a presence she cannot see, but knows beyond doubt. He is here. Eira shifts into her human form, scanning the abyss for any sign of life.
Slowly, she steps forward. "Come out, shadow. I know you are watching."
Silence stretches, thick and heavy. Then, a shimmering mist curls from the depths of darkness, rising like smoke but glittering like a thousand stars caught in the niht. The air grows colder, a chill sinking into her bones despite the desert heat. The mist twists and shifts, coiling upon itself until it takes the shape of a figure—a man, or something close to it. His once-human form is barely discernible now, his skin translucent and his eyes gleaming with a cold, unnatural light.
The voice that follows is hollow, ancient, and full of sorrow. "Eira. Ikyn. You have come at last."
Ikyn tenses beside her, his claws flexing against the earth. "You hold no power here. You are nothing but remnants."
The mist-man lets out a low, hollow laugh, the sound slithering into Eira's mind like an unshakable whisper. "Nothing? And yet, you are here. Seeking me. Fearing me."
She steps forward, her voice unwavering. "Not fear. Certainty. This is the end, Dragon Lord. There will be no resurrection, no return."
"You cannot destroy what is eternal," he murmurs. The mist shifts, tendrils curling toward them.
Eira spreads her arms wide, drawing the magic inside her to the surface, feeling the pulsing energy build in her chest. "Then we shall prove otherwise."
Without hesitation, Ikyn and Eira strike together—fire and force, will and destiny. But their magic passes through him, the mist swirling around their efforts, impossible to touch. They try again, harder this time, seeking the essence of the Dragon Lord, trying to understand how he has persisted. "You cannot kill what has no body," the Dragon Lord’s voice echoes, now shifting like the wind itself.
Eira refuses to be deterred. "How have you existed this long after death? What is your goal? You are no god—only a curse."
The mist flickers, revealing the faintest semblance of a smile. "I have existed because I was never meant to die. My purpose is not one of return, but of rebirth."
"Rebirth?" Ikyn’s voice grows sharp. "From death? From what?"
"The balance between life and death is delicate," the Dragon Lord whispers. "I will bring it all into alignment. I will rebuild the world in my image."
Eira tightens her focus, channeling every ounce of strength she has. "We will not let that happen."
Ikyn stands tall beside her. "You are nothing but smoke, and smoke fades. You will not rebuild anything."
With renewed force, they strike again, pressing deeper into the mist. This time, they target the very essence of the Dragon Lord—his soul, hidden within the layers of the mist. The air crackles as their combined power cuts through the darkness, unraveling the ancient, cursed thread that binds him to this world.
The mist fractures with a final, anguished cry. The Dragon Lord’s form dissolves into the wind, scattering like dust in the air, his shadow forever banished.
And then, there is only silence.
Eira exhales, her body trembling as she stands firm. Ikyn steps beside her, his golden eyes searching hers. They have not finished this fight—not yet. The mist that was once the Dragon Lord dissipates into the air, but the sense of his presence lingers like a bad dream, persistent and unyielding. He is not gone. She knows this, and Ikyn knows it too.
"It was never going to be easy," he murmurs, his eyes scanning the horizon, still sharp with focus. "This fight will take time. We don’t have the power to end him now. We need more. More knowledge, more strength. Time to train, and time to seek the truth of his past—his reign before he fell. Only then can we truly face him."
The air still hums with a strange energy. A reminder that something far darker lurks beneath the surface.
They’ll travel to the places where the Dragon Lord once ruled with an iron fist, unearthing secrets buried deep in the earth and time. They’ll learn what they can, piece by piece, until they are prepared for the true battle. This fight is not over—it has only just begun. They must face the darkness, not with brute force, but with knowledge, with preparation. They will become stronger. They will find the Dragon Lord’s weaknesses, and when the time comes, they will face him, once and for all.
The road ahead is long, but it is one they will walk together. As the first light of dawn creeps over the horizon, Eira feels the flicker of hope deep within her. It’s small, but it’s there. They will not let this world fall to shadow. Not on their watch.
