29. Return
The world around us slowly comes back into focus, but in this moment, all that matters is the bond we share. The fight, the pain, the fear—it all fades away as we hold each other, finding solace in our love.
Looking into Ikyn's eyes, I see the man I love, the man who has fought so hard to protect me and our kingdom. The primal rage is gone, replaced by a vulnerability that takes my breath away. He is human again.
Together, we will face whatever challenges lie ahead. We will restore balance to our world and protect the peace we have fought so hard to achieve. For in this moment, as we hold each other close, I know that love will always prevail.
The night air is cool against our skin as we sit together, our breaths slowly evening out. Ikyn's strength is returning, and I can see the determination in his eyes. The battle has taken its toll, but we are stronger for it.
"I didn't mean to hurt you," he says softly, his voice filled with regret. "The beast inside-."
"Hush, I know," I reply, my hand resting on his. "At least it’s over now. Together, we can overcome anything."
He nods, his grip tightening on mine. "Thank you, Eira. For everything."
I smile, my heart swelling with love and pride. "We are a team, Ikyn. Always and forever."
The sky above us is dotted with stars, a reminder of the vastness of our world and the challenges that still lie ahead. But in this moment, I feel a sense of peace and purpose. With Ikyn by my side, I know that we can face whatever comes our way.
As we rise to our feet, I feel the weight of my responsibilities as the Dragon Queen settles on my shoulders. For once - no - for the first time, I am ready. I will protect our people, the tri-kingdom, and the dragon lands. I will be the keeper of peace for all beings.
Hand in hand, Ikyn and I take to the skies once more. The night air is filled with the promise of a new dawn, and I know that we will face it together. For in the end, love is the most powerful force of all, and it will guide us through the darkness and into the light.
The cold bite of the early morning air is a stark contrast to the warmth of my scales as I soar through the sky in my dragon form. The rhythmic, powerful beats of my wings resonate through my entire being, a steady drumbeat of freedom and might. Every wingbeat feels like a release, every stretch of sinew a reminder of the strength that lies within me.
Behind me, I sense the comforting presence of Ikyn, his form a majestic shadow gliding through the dawn. Together, our flight patterns create an intricate dance, a ballet in the skies that is as old as the bond between our kind. I feel a surge of joy as I glance back to see Ikyn's silver scales glinting in the early light, a beacon of strength and unity.
*”You’re beautiful, Eira,”* Ikyn mind-links me.
I stop mid-flight, hovering above the clouds to look at him. Even in his dragon form, the gleam in his eye is unmistakable, and as always, a confident smirk adorns his face. *”Iky, I do have one question… What kind of dragon am I?”* I can almost feel it, but I can’t pinpoint it. I had the help of the spirits in our battle, but I can’t control the dead. *Can I?*
As if sensing my thoughts, Ikyn chuckles. His mind-link tickles my brain and I shake my head with a huff. *”My Queen,”* he starts, *”Did you not feel it in our battle? You are a Spirit Dragon. The Dragon Queens past and the Gods are all within you. You are the greatest Dragon Queen to exist.”*
As the sun begins its ascent, the sky transforms from the deep indigo of night to the soft blush of dawn. The light chases away the shadows, painting the horizon in hues of gold and rose. We continue our flight as I guide us to my childhood home. Below, the earth responds to the touch of light, the landscapes awakening as if by magic. Fields of wildflowers unfurl their petals, stretching toward the warmth, while streams sparkle like liquid diamonds.
The world seems to hold its breath in these precious moments, as if nature itself knows of our journey and is offering its blessings. My heart swells with an overwhelming sense of belonging and purpose. I am a bridge between worlds, a herald of change and peace.
The snowy peaks of my family's kingdom come into view, their majestic forms dusted with fresh snow that glimmers in the sunlight. The sight of the mountains, crowned with frosted edelweiss, makes my heart ache with longing. Each flower, each rock, is a memory of my childhood, of the times before the burden of destiny was placed upon my shoulders.
As we draw closer, I make out the soldiers standing at attention, their eyes fixed on the approaching figures. There is a palpable tension in the air, a mixture of awe and apprehension. For many of them, the sight of two dragons flying in tandem is a once-in-a-lifetime event, a legend come to life.
With a final, powerful beat of my wings, I begin my descent. I can feel Ikyn mirroring my movements, our landing as synchronized as our flight. As my talons touch the ground, the earth seems to tremble with the impact, a quiet acknowledgment of my return.
My father, stands at the forefront of the gathering. His eyes, sharp and discerning, soften as they meet mine. I can see the pride and relief etched in his features, emotions that mirror my own. Beside him stand King Monse and King Lios, their expressions a blend of respect and curiosity.
As Ikyn and I fold our wings and settle into our human forms, the three kings move forward, their steps measured and deliberate. Then, in a gesture that speaks volumes of the respect and hope they hold for the future, they bow deeply before the Dragon King and Queen.
I feel a lump form in my throat. This moment, this gesture, is more than just a greeting. It is a recognition of the roles we are to play, a pledge of unity and cooperation. I glance at Ikyn, whose eyes reflect the same emotions swirling within me. Together, we step forward to embrace the future, ready to lead our people into a new dawn.
“Arise, My Lords,” I speak, standing tall. A new confidence forms within me. I am no long Princess Eira. I am the Dragon Queen. “I have told you before there can be peace. Why must your arrogance shroud your mind?” The kings look nervous, as they usually are in the presence of Ikyn. I take their silence to continue, “Your skies are now clear. Obvious signs whatever it was Ikyn did mere days ago no longer holds effect. Savea, Sarkis, and Kyai: you no longer have a title as far as we’re concerned. For your people, prepare for a merger. We will scout a new land for all our people to become one united kingdom.”
"Eira, please reconsider," King Lios begins, his voice a mix of authority and pleading. "This merger will disrupt the balance we have maintained for generations. Our people may not welcome such drastic changes."
King Monse nods in agreement, his brows furrowed in concern. "He is right, Eira. The traditions of our kingdoms are deeply rooted. A sudden merge could lead to unrest and uncertainty among our subjects. We must think carefully about this."
I listen, my eyes steady and unyielding. "I understand your concerns, but we cannot cling to the past at the expense of our future. This merger is about forging a stronger, more prosperous realm for all our people." King Lios opens his mouth to argue further, but I raise my hand, my gaze firm. "I have made my decision. We will move forward with the merger. It is time for a new era of unity to maintain peace."
King Monse sighs, his shoulders slumping slightly. He exchanges a look with King Lios, who gives a reluctant nod. "Very well, Eira," King Monse murmurs, his tone softening. "We trust that you have the best interests of our kingdoms at heart."
King Lios nods in agreement, his expression a mix of resignation and admiration. "We thank you for your steadfastness and your vision for a better future."
My father has remained silent throughout the exchange. His eyes meet mine, and he gives a proud nod, a silent testament to his support and pride in his daughter. I feel a surge of warmth at his silent endorsement, knowing that I have the strength and support to lead our kingdoms into a new age.
