27. Accepting Destiny

***Eira***

The castle walls tremble as Ikyn begins his transformation. The air crackles with an unfamiliar energy, a primal intensity that sends shivers down my spine. As I watch, his body contorts and expands, scales replacing skin, wings unfurling with a snap that reverberates through the hall.

Ikyn’s dragon form usually exudes power and grace, but tonight, there is a wildness in his movements, an unbridled ferocity that makes my heart race with fear. His eyes, normally filled with warmth and intelligence, are now cold and predatory, as if the very essence of his humanity has been stolen away.

"Ikyn?" I whisper, hoping to reach some part of him that remains. But there is no response, only a low, guttural growl that sends chills down my spine. I take a step back, my instincts screaming at me to flee.

The ground shakes as Ikyn's massive claws dig into the stone floor. His roar is deafening, a sound that seems to rip through the very fabric of the castle. The force of it knocks me off balance, and I scramble to regain my footing. There is no reasoning with him in this state, no way to reach the man I love.

I turn and run, my heart pounding in my chest. The corridors blur as I race through them, desperate to put as much distance as possible between myself and the monster Ikyn has become. My mind is a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, but one thing is clear: I need to get to The Gods' Creation.

Sensing the urgency in my movements, Soldreru lowers her wing, ready for me to climb on her back. I barely manage to hold on as we take off into the night, the cool air a stark contrast to the heat of the castle.

As we fly, my thoughts return to Ikyn. The man I love is still in there somewhere, buried beneath the primal rage that has overtaken him. I cannot let him destroy himself or our world. The only way to save him, to save everyone, is to undergo the Change.

The mountain containing The Gods' Creation looms ahead, a sacred place where the ancient tree stands. It is said that only those destined to become the Dragon Queen can complete the Change there, but I am willing to take the risk. For the sake of our people, the tri-kingdom, and the dragon lands, I must succeed.

Soldreru dives in an opening, guiding us through the darkened tunnels. As we near the tree, I am met with resistance. Nymphs emerge from the shadows, their delicate forms shimmering in the moonlight. "Eira, this is not your path," one of them says, her voice filled with sorrow. "Turn back now, before it is too late."

I shake my head, determination burning in my chest. "I cannot. I have to do this, for everyone’s sake."

Fairies flutter around me, their wings a blur of color. "You are not meant to take on this burden," they plead, the chiming of their voices tickle my ear. "Find another way."

Ignoring their protests, I press forward, Soldreru's claws thundering against the ground. Centaurs appear, their powerful bodies blocking my path. "Stop this madness, Eira," one of them commands. "You do not understand the consequences."

"I understand them better than anyone," I retort, my voice unwavering. "I will not let our world fall into chaos."

Mermaids emerge from the depths beneath the waterfall, their voices like a mournful song. "Please, Eira," they beg. "Do not sacrifice yourself for this."

Tears well in my eyes, but I push through, forcing my way to The Gods’ Creation. "I have to. It’s the only way."

The tree stands tall and majestic, its ancient branches reaching for the sky. The air around it hums with power, and I can feel the weight of countless generations pressing down on me. This is where I must undergo the Change, where I must become the Dragon Queen.

Taking a deep breath, I step forward. The nymphs, fairies, centaurs, and mermaids watch with sorrowful eyes, knowing that they cannot deter me from my path. The closer I get to the tree, the more I feel its energy coursing through me, filling me with a strength I didn't know I possessed.

I reach out and touch the bark, feeling the ancient power of the tree pulsing beneath my fingers. Shaking off my own nerves, I crawl into the hollow for the last time. The air around me crackles with energy, and I close my eyes, surrendering myself to the Change. The process is both exhilarating and terrifying, as if my very being is being torn apart and rebuilt.

The pain is intense, but I grit my teeth and hold on, knowing that I cannot turn back now. The tree's energy envelops me, and I feel my body changing, becoming something more than human. My senses sharpen, my strength increases, and I can feel the power of the dragons flowing through my veins.

As the transformation begins, I hear a voice, ancient and wise, speaking directly to my soul. "Welcome back, child. You must have returned for a reason. Will you accept The Change? Become the next keeper of peace?"

"I accept," I whisper, my voice filled with determination. "I will become the Dragon Queen, for the sake of all."

The energy intensifies, coursing through my body like liquid fire. I feel my bones shifting, my muscles strengthening, and my senses heightening. Every part of me is being remade, reshaped into something more powerful, more divine. The process is both exhilarating and terrifying, as if my very being is being torn apart and rebuilt.

Images flash through my mind—visions of past Dragon Queens, their strength and wisdom guiding me. I see their triumphs and sacrifices, their unwavering dedication to maintaining peace. Their legacy flows into me, filling me with a sense of purpose and responsibility.

The pain is immense, but so is the power that comes with it. I feel my humanity slipping away, replaced by something greater, something more than I ever imagined. My heart races as the transformation reaches its peak, a blinding surge of energy that leaves me breathless.

When the Change is complete, I open my eyes and look at myself. I am no longer just Eira; I am the Dragon Queen, the keeper of peace for all beings. The responsibility weighs heavily on my shoulders, but I am ready to face it head-on.

The nymphs, fairies, centaurs, and mermaids bow before me, their expressions a mix of awe and sorrow. "You have done what we could not," one of the nymphs says, her voice filled with respect. "You have taken on a great burden, Eira. May the gods grant you strength."

I nod, my heart filled with resolve. "Thank you. I will do everything in my power to protect our world."

A soft hand squeezes my shoulder. Looking back, Ilyana stands proud. “The Change is complete and now I must go. You know what to do.” I offer an understanding nod and close my eyes. I can feel my bones, my entire being, breaking. My skin burns as it stretches, remodeling itself into a new form. I scream as I can’t keep myself from opening my eyes. Everything around me blurs, figures becoming smaller. Finally feeling complete, I crane my now long neck back to the rest of my body. My scales shimmer with a deep, regal amethyst hue, reflecting the light like a thousand gemstones. Each scale is intricately crafted, creating an overall appearance of majestic splendor. I flex my claws, marveling at the onyx accents that now adorn them. Sharp and curved, they stand in striking contrast to my amethyst scales, adding a layer of menace to my already formidable presence. My wings are grand and expansive, with veins of onyx running through the translucent membrane, creating a marbled effect that is both beautiful and intimidating. As I spread my wings, the intricate pattern of amethyst and onyx is fully revealed, a true testament to the awe-inspiring grandeur of my new form.

Giving my new wings a few beats, I lift myself off the ground and take off into the night, followed closely behind by Soldreru. I will save Ikyn, and I will restore balance to our lands. As we fly back toward the castle, my thoughts are consumed with the challenges ahead. Ikyn is still lost in his primal state, and I must find a way to bring him back. The tri-kingdom and the dragon lands are on the brink of war, and I must prevent it at all costs. *I am the Dragon Queen now, and it is my duty to safeguard the peace and harmony of our world.* No matter the cost, I will protect the people I love and the lands we call home. For the sake of our world, and for the love of Ikyn, I will succeed.
