Chapter 44 A wild guess

Chapter 44 A wild guess
Madison Smith - POV

“What are we going to do now?” Freya asked me, but I had no clue. Doctor Riley didn't look like she was joking.

“I think we will meet the woman like we promised and tell her what happened up until the poison incident.” I suggested.

“Well, hopefully we don't blow up in the process.” Freya sarcastically said, but I didn't say anything. My mind was still replaying yesterday’s events when I finally reached the pack entrance.

“Where are you going, Miss?” the warrior at the gates questioned.

"It's my day off today. I am going to the human town," I told him.

“Are you planning to walk all the way to the human town?” he asked me in a skeptical tone.

“Well, I will hitch a ride on my way there.” I told him when I handed him my pass. He took the paper, and after examining it, he gave it back to me and opened the gates. I was walking for almost an hour when I finally stopped and looked back, hoping to see if there were any vehicles, but just like earlier, the road was deserted.

“We should shift. It would be faster.” Freya told me when I rolled my eyes at her.

"Yes, faster to reach our death.” I told her. “What if someone from the white moon pack stops to give a lift? He would immediately take us back to Elijah, and that would be the end for us," I told her.

I was walking for a little over an hour when I heard a vehicle approaching. I turned around when I saw a Mercedes speeding towards me. I moved to the side of the road and extended my arm as I waved at the driver to stop.

“It doesn't look like he is going to stop.” I said, and just when I was about to turn around and continue walking, the car stopped in front of me and the passenger side window rolled down.

“Do you need a lift?” It was a man in his late thirties, and from his scent, I knew that he was a human.

“Yes, could you drop me off at the nearest town?” I asked him when he nodded his head.

“Get in," he told me when I quickly thanked him and got in the back. “Why were you walking alone in the woods?” the man asked me after a long silence.

“My boyfriend and I had a fight, and he dumped me in the middle of nowhere before speeding away.” I lied without a second thought when the man looked at me from the rearview mirror with a pitying look on his face.

“I am sorry to hear that," he said in an apologetic tone when I nodded my head and quickly looked out through the window, not wanting to continue this conversation.

Thirty minutes later I saw the town come into view when the man stopped beside a restaurant. “Are you sure you will be all right?” he asked me when I nodded my head and gave him a reassuring smile.

“Thank you for the ride.” I told him as soon as I got down, and he soon sped away.

I looked around the town when I began walking towards the bar. Despite it being quiet early, the bar was crowded with people almost drunk as I went straight to the bar and took a seat. “What would you like, miss?”

“A whiskey.” I told him when he nodded his head and walked away.

“You are early.” I turned to my right when I saw the woman take a seat next to me. “Did you get the job?” she asked me when I nodded my head, and right then my drink arrived, and before I could pay, the woman paid for it.

“The job came with a few strings attached,” I told her.

“What do you mean?” she asked me when I told her everything that happened.

“I don't think I can tell you anything.” I told her when she became quiet.

“Your father is an alpha, right?” The woman asked me when a frown appeared on my face, but I nodded my head.

“What does that have to do with my situation right now?” I asked her when I saw a small smile appear on her face.

“You won't die, Madison. Tell me what happened," the woman insisted while I was having an internal dilemma whether to trust her on this. “The potion you drank is called a seal potion," the woman began to explain. “Alpha Alastair was right. Anyone who drinks is bound by the spell to never utter the truth, but there is a loophole in that potion.” She paused, letting her words sink in before she continued. “The potion has no effect on an alpha or his heirs.”

“Is this a theory, or is it something that has been tested before?” I asked her with an arched eyebrow.

“This has been tested before. The witches don't know how to get past it, but right now I think it has come in handy," she told me when I nodded my head. I took in a deep breath and looked at her or at the end of the shadow of her face that was visible.

“Elijah is hiding his mother in the cabin deep in the forest.”

“His mother?” the woman asked me confusedly when I nodded my head. “You mean Luna Chanel? The one who died in a rogue attack alongside her husband?”

“I was stunned as well, but then I asked Doctor Riley for details, and she told me that even though her husband succumbed to his injuries, Luna Chanel was still holding onto life when a witch saved her.”

“So she is living in the woods in hiding?” the woman asked me when I nodded my head.

“Doctor Riley stated that any sort of magic that is performed in a werewolf is frowned upon and would result in the death penalty. Since immortality cannot be achieved for the ones who were revived in this manner. Luna Chanel was only given six years before she would die, and I guess Elijah has found a way to make his mother live longer. ” I told her.

The woman didn't say anything while her fingers lightly tapped on her wine glass when she abruptly stopped her movement and turned to face me.
