Chapter 39 A promotion
Madison Smith - POV
After a sleepless night, I woke up way before the sun was out and quickly got dressed and walked downstairs. The house was quiet except for the soft clanking that I heard in the kitchen. As I walked in, I saw two omegas busy preparing breakfast.
“Good morning, Susan. You are up early today?” The head omega asked me with a smile.
“I couldn't sleep after everything that happened last night.” I admitted as I took a seat on the barstool.
“I don't think anyone slept in this pack," she commented as she took out a plate and began serving the sausages she just fried. “The warriors were patrolling this place all night, and they just barged in at two am and searched the entire place.”
“What? But no one came into my room last night.” I said, confused, when a nervous smile appeared on her face.
“Beta Gordon instructed the warriors not to disturb you.” The head omega informed me, and I heard the suspicion in her tone.
“I heard rumors that you were the one who saved the doctor. Is it true?” The second omega asked me when I nodded my head.
“I took a stroll in the forest on my way back home when I heard her scream.”
“You must be brave to go and save her," she exclaimed, and I knew why she said that. Omegas are docile creatures, and they would never dare risk their lives when they know that they can never win against a higher-ranking werewolf or a rogue.
“I couldn't just see her die,” I told her as the head omega placed the plate in front of me. After I ate my breakfast, I quickly left the house and made my way to the hospital.
“Where are you going?” a warrior asked me as he stopped me from entering the hospital building.
“I work here as a cleaner.” I told him as I showed him my ID card.
“She is the woman who saved the doctor," another warrior intervened.
“Oh, so you are the brave omega everyone is talking about?” the warrior asked me when I nodded my head. “You can go inside," he said as he opened the door. I stepped inside and walked to the supply closet.
After picking up the cleaning supplies, I walked into the hallway that housed the private rooms. I scanned every door when I saw one that had Doctor Riley's name on it. I looked at the empty hallway one last time before I opened the door and walked in.
The room was quiet, but Doctor Riley was awake. “Who are you?” she asked me as her eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
“I am Susan. I saved you from that rogue yesterday.” I told her when I saw recognition cloud her eyes.
“Oh, I think I remember," she told me.
“Please take a seat," she told me as she gestured towards the chair beside her bed.
“Was June with me when the rogue attacked me?” she asked me when a frown appeared on my face.
“Who is June?” I asked her.
“The nurse. She was my best friend," she told me, and that is when I realized that no one had told her that her friend was dead.
“Doctor Riley, I think it would be best if Alpha Alastair speaks with you first.” I told her, and when I tried to get up, she quickly grabbed my hand.
“What happened to June?” she asked me as her voice cracked at the end.
“Doctor Riley, I think…”
“Tell me what happened to her!” Her voice was sharp while her eyes held desperation.
I took in a deep breath before I told her what happened. “She died before help could reach her, Doctor Riley. I am sorry.” I said in a sympathetic tone when her eyes clouded with tears and her hold on my wrist loosened.
She shook her head, not wanting to believe the truth when she quickly averted her eyes. “I am sorry. I didn't know she was there with you. I only brought you to the hospital, and that was when Beta Gordon informed me about June.” I told her when she shook her head.
“I don't blame you," she said, her voice thick with emotion while an awkward silence surrounded us. “I have never seen you before.”
“I joined this pack a few days ago after my parents died in an accident,” I told her.
“Why did you save me, Susan?”
“You looked like the friend I lost, Doctor Riley.” I paused, letting my words sink in. “I am sorry for saying this at a time like this, but when I saw you withering in pain, her face was the first thing that came to my mind," I told her.
“Do you have any knowledge in the medical field?” she asked me out of the blue.
“Not much. But I can do basic first aid, and I am a quick learner." I told her when she nodded her head.
“You know I…” Before she could continue, the door opened, and I quickly got up from my place when I saw Elijah standing there with Beta Gordon. His eyes landed on me before they locked with Doctor Riley's.
“Who is she, Riley?” Elijah asked, and I saw Beta Gordon was about to reply when Doctor Riley answered.
“She is going to be my new personal nurse.”
“What?” Elijah and Beta Gordon said at the same time.
“She is an omega, Doctor Riley. And she just joined our pack a few days ago.” Beta Gordon exclaimed, but Elijah’s eyes were locked on me. It felt like he was able to see through my disguise, which made my heart skip a beat.
“Why didn't you inform me about her?” Elijah asked Beta Gordon.
“She is just a rogue, Elijah. I didn't think it was important to bother you about this.” Beta Gordon argued.
“Doctor Riley, you can't have her as your assistant.” Elijah insisted, and I was taken aback by his behavior.
“I don't think you have a say in that, Alpha Alastair. You failed in your responsibility in protecting her," she accused, and for the first time, Elijah bowed his head in shame.
“I am sorry, but how can you trust her?” He asked when I saw a smile appear on her face.
