Chapter 36 The beta found out
Alpha Maximus Alexus - POV
“You shouldn't have ruined the moment.” Ares grumbled, annoyed, while I tried to fall asleep.
“Say whatever you want, but I don't want to start this relationship with lies.” I asserted when he rolled his eyes and retreated to the back of my head. It's been a few hours since Antonella stormed into her room, and since then I haven't heard a sound.
I let out a sigh and turned around and closed my eyes, trying to fall asleep. I was almost drifting off when I heard a click jolting me awake. I turned to face the door when I saw it was slightly open and Antonella was standing near the doorway, unsure.
“Antonella?” I called out when her eyes landed on me.
“I thought you were asleep," she exclaimed.
“I was, but I am an alpha and I am always alert.” I said with a smile on my face. “Do you need anything?” I asked her as she opened the door wider and walked in. She was wearing a pair of pink shorts with a matching camisole top.
“Can I sleep in here?” her voice broke me out of my trance when I looked at her.
“Sure.” I didn't ask her why she was here in my room or what decision she took. I know just her presence was a silent confirmation of our relationship. She walked inside and gently closed the door as she approached the bed.
I have fought countless battles and dealt with rogues who were considered the worst enemy by some, and in every battle I fought, I have never felt my heart race this fast or my hands tremble as she climbed into bed.
I laid back down, and soon she moved closer to me as I turned around and gently wrapped my arm around her, cautiously and lightly, letting her know that she could move away. Instead, she snuggled closer to me and closed her eyes, and that was all the reassurance I needed as I hugged her tight and closed my eyes, sleep instantly taking over my senses.
I was startled awake at the persistent knocking. “Maximus, are you awake?” I heard Arthur’s voice from the other side of the door. My eyes moved to Antonella, who was sound asleep.
“What do you want, Arthur?” I asked him through the mind link.
The door clicked open and he stepped inside with a smile on his face. "It's a tradition to have breakfast together so…” he trailed off. Antonella had woken up from the sound as she stared at Arthur with a dazed look while shock took over his expression.
“Luna Antonella?” he sounded confused. Inquidly got up from the bed when Antonella did the same and got beside me. Her hand wrapped around my bicep in a tight grip. “Maximus, what is going on in here? Where is Luna Evangeline?” Arthur asked me.
“Who else is in the house, Arthur?” I asked him.
“How did she get in here, Maximus?” Arthur asked me, his voice rising an octave. Anger was clear in his iris as he looked directly at Antonella.
“Who else is in this house right now?” I asked him in my alpha tone, which made him avert his eyes to the floor. His hands curled in fists as he gritted out the answer.
“No one else. But I have invited Rachel for breakfast. She should be here in thirty minutes.”
“Good, shall we have this conversation in my office?” I asked him when he looked at me.
“Where is Luna Evangeline?” Arthur asked me, and I know that he would not move from this place unless I gave him an answer.
“This is Luna Evangeline.” I told him. A tense silence descended in the room while he processed my words, and soon his eyes widened in horror.
“You used her help to hide her?” He asked me in an accusing tone.
“Yes.”
“Why did you do this, Maximus? You know she is the mate of our enemy?” Arthur asked me.
“She was about to take her life, and I saved her and brought her home.”
“Alpha Alastair is looking for her, and if he figures out that she was here all this time, it would backfire on us,” Arthur told me.
“She is my mate now, Arthur. How do you think I would let her go with another man?” I asked him when a frown appeared on his face.
“What are you talking about?” he asked when I turned to face Antonella. She nodded her head when she titled her neck to show her my mate mark.
"Isn't that mark fake as well?” he asked when I shook my head.
“I accidentally marked her, making her mine, and I have no choice but to keep her by my side if I want to keep my strength.” I explained when his eyes moved to Antonella.
“Why did you run away from your pack, Luna Antonella?” Arthur questioned.
“I found him cheating on me with another woman. I couldn't take it anymore, so I left. I know you feel like I have ruined your alpha’s chance in finding his fated mate, but…”
“I have never seen him happy.” Arthur interrupted when a frown appeared on Antinella’s face.
“What?” she asked when a soft smile appeared on Arthur’s face.
“I have known Maximus since childhood, Luna Antonella. He never shows pity to anyone, and ever since his sister died, he has changed into a totally different person. He has never spared anyone from your pack. You must be someone special.” He paused, letting his words sink in before he continued. “They say that after a certain age you would never find your mate, and Maximus has already passed that point. I thought he would never find love again, but after seeing you two together, I know I might be wrong.”
“I should have told you this sooner.” I told him when he shook his head.
“I know why you kept this a secret, Maximus. But I will stand by your decision till my last breath.”
