Chapter 582

Chapter 582

Harper kept pressing, and Molly still wanted to keep hiding the truth, giving vague and evasive answers.

"Nothing really happened, I can promise you Caden isn't cheating."

Molly tried to sound casual as she reassured Harper, "You've got me keeping an eye on Caden, isn't that enough? Besides, when has Caden ever needed watching? He never goes near strange women."

"Just relax. If anything comes up, I'll tell you right away."

In her panic, Molly kept talking more and more.

She forgot the old saying: the more you say, the more mistakes you make.

Whenever Harper left before, Molly would at most joke that Caden was keeping himself pure.

Since when did she start giving these long-winded speeches?

Harper knew something must have happened.

And judging by how they were hiding it from her, it had to be about Caden.

She even had a vague idea of what it might be.

She cut Molly off before she could keep stalling and asked directly, "Did Caden get hurt?"

Molly blurted out without thinking, "How did you know?"

Silence on the other end. Molly suddenly realized she'd walked right into a trap. She bit her lip and said with frustration, "That's not what I meant..."

But Harper already knew. She asked straight out, "Tell me exactly what happened. I'm really unhappy that you've been hiding this from me. I don't like what you're doing at all."

As far as Harper was concerned, now that it had already happened, there was no point in covering it up.

All this hiding would only make her feel disrespected.

Harper was serious about it, and Molly understood she genuinely meant it. She apologized, "I'm sorry, Harper. I just thought since you're pregnant, it'd be better to keep some things from you."

"I understand you mean well, but there's a right way to go about it."

Molly let out a sigh and told Harper, "The thing is, Caden was in a car accident and got hurt. He didn't want you to see him and worry, so he kept it from you."

Harper immediately panicked, "Something this serious and you all hid it from me!"

She was about to get up and head back right away. "Which hospital? I'm going back now."

Molly quickly stopped her, "Hold on, don't panic. It's really just some minor cuts. It's not as bad as you're thinking."

"Not as bad as I'm thinking, and you still didn't tell me?" Harper instinctively didn't believe it.

Everyone had been hiding things from her, and she was already upset. Now she trusted Molly's words even less.

Molly sighed and urged her anxiously, "I'm not lying to you this time. It really isn't as serious as you think. The bigger reason Caden doesn't want you coming back is that he's worried about you being targeted."

She rushed to explain, "What if the people who hurt Caden are still watching? You're pregnant right now. We're worried that if you get on the road, you could be in danger. That's why we don't want you coming back. Something could easily happen on the way. Staying where you are is the safest option."

Harper stopped and thought about whether Molly was telling the truth this time.

Molly's concern did make sense.

The baby couldn't afford any accidents. Her body and the baby were completely tied together right now, and any risk would be doubled.

Harper couldn't argue with that.

She had nothing to say in the face of their worry.

In the end, for the bigger picture, she had no choice but to stay for now.

After hanging up with Molly, Harper called Caden.

She needed to hear from Caden himself exactly how badly he was hurt.

"Harper?" Caden had no idea his situation had already been exposed.

When he saw her calling, he asked in confusion, "Is something else wrong? Things are almost sorted out on my end. The photos of me and Kimber are mostly deleted."

"That's not what I'm calling about." Harper didn't confront Caden directly. Instead she said, "It's been a while since we've seen each other. How come you haven't video called me today? Let me see what you're up to."

Caden kept his cool and teased her, "Don't trust me that much? Doing a room check now?"

Harper didn't respond.

She just started a video call.

She gave Caden no time to react or explain.

Caden tried to explain, gesturing toward the hospital background behind him, "I came to see the doctor about something. I'll be leaving soon."

But Harper shot back, "If you're leaving, where are you going to get that injury looked at?"

Caden opened his mouth but said nothing.

What was there left to misunderstand?

Harper had clearly known all along and had been quietly watching him try to talk his way out of it.

He looked helpless, with a touch of guilt, "I wasn't trying to deceive you. I just didn't want you to worry."

"I know. That's not what I want to talk about right now." Harper couldn't be bothered to say more about their behavior and asked Caden directly, "Where are you hurt? Let me see how bad it is. Hiding it from me only makes me worry more."

"It's really not serious." Caden reluctantly lifted his shirt, revealing a cut along his side. "Looks like Molly told you. The wound isn't bad, and with the doctor here, nothing will go wrong."

Harper didn't listen to his explanation.

She checked for herself, and once she confirmed the wound really wasn't serious, she asked, "So what actually happened? Molly said you were in a car accident."

"It was deliberate." Caden explained with a tired look. "A driver who'd been drinking blocked my way back with a large truck."

"But we got out of the way in time, and the driver was so nervous about the whole hit job that nobody ended up seriously hurt."

Harper nodded. "Do you know who's behind it?"

"We've traced a financial connection between the driver's relative and one of Arthur's drivers, but there's no hard evidence, so we can't do much with it."

That was exactly what Harper had expected.

Arthur was careful and calculated. If he dared to hire someone to hurt Caden, he would have covered his tracks thoroughly.

But not being able to get back at him over this particular incident didn't mean Harper was willing to just let it go.

She asked Caden, "What about on other fronts?"

Caden knew exactly what Harper was asking.

They looked at each other and smiled. He said calmly, "Don't worry. I've already hit back. Arthur lost a lot of money this time. We got our revenge."

"Good." Harper felt satisfied.

Arthur had made a bold move, and Harper was furious. Now that she knew Caden had already struck back, she felt a little better.

After confirming Caden was safe, Harper still wanted to get back as soon as possible. She had nothing left to do here, and not being able to keep an eye on Caden's injury in person made her uneasy.

Caden heard her out, thought for a moment, and said, "Stay another two weeks. Arthur didn't get what he wanted this time, and we turned it around on him. He lost so much, he won't let it go. He's probably watching your every move."

Harper thought about it and agreed.

Arthur wouldn't let this slide. If she ran into him on the way back, she'd be on her own with little backup. That was a real risk.
