Chapter 175 It’s not what you think at all
The nurse let out a long, relieved breath and quickly glanced around the room to make sure no one else was close enough to overhear even a single word of their conversation.
Once she was absolutely certain they were alone, she leaned in closer and dropped her voice to a low, careful whisper.
“Since he’s already in LA, I’ve got the perfect excuse to delay the whole procedure without raising any red flags. I’ll bring him here myself and tell Doctor Mitch you’ve got an important visitor. He’ll stay hidden until the right moment hits, and then you’ll finally get to blow this whole disgusting thing wide open.”
Her eyes burned with fierce, unbreakable determination that lit up her whole face. “It’s about time this organ trafficking nightmare ends for good and these monsters get exactly what they deserve.”
Relief crashed over Love so hard and so fast that her eyes instantly stung with hot, overwhelming tears that she couldn’t hold back. She grabbed the nurse’s hand and squeezed it tight, her voice thick with raw gratitude and emotion. “Thank you so much. I don’t even know how I’ll ever be able to repay you for this. You just saved my life when I thought it was over.”
The nurse smiled softly and gave Love’s hand a gentle, comforting pat full of warmth. “You don’t owe me a thing, sweetheart. We’re women. We gotta protect each other whenever we can in this crazy world.”
A small smile curled the corner of her lips, filled with both genuine hope for the future and a hint of deep regret for the past. “My dream has always been to become a real doctor. That’s exactly why I’ve decided to go back to school and chase it no matter what.”
Love looked at her with real curiosity and admiration shining in her eyes. “What stopped you from going after it before?”
The nurse’s smile faded just a little as old memories surfaced. “I couldn’t afford medical school no matter how hard I tried. The tuition was way out of reach for someone like me, so I became a nurse instead. It wasn’t the dream I had always wanted, but it was the closest thing I could get at the time.”
She shrugged, trying to brush off the lingering pain, but it still showed clearly on her face. “I’ve been saving every single paycheck for years now. I still don’t have nearly enough, but I’ll figure it out somehow. I’ll work extra hours if I have to, whatever it takes.”
Love didn’t even need a single second to think it over or second-guess herself. “Then you don’t have to worry about tuition anymore, not even for a minute.”
The nurse blinked hard, completely stunned and frozen in place. “What?”
“I mean every word of it,” Love said firmly, her voice steady and full of conviction despite everything she was going through.
“Your tuition, your books, your living expenses, everything you need to make it through. I’ll take care of all of it without hesitation. From today on, money isn’t going to stop you from becoming the amazing doctor you were always meant to be.”
The nurse just stared at her in total disbelief, completely speechless for a long moment. Tears slowly welled up in her eyes until one slipped down her cheek in a glistening trail. “Love…”
“It’s the absolute least I can do after everything you’ve risked for me,” Love whispered back, her own emotions overflowing in a powerful wave that made her voice crack slightly.
The nurse quickly wiped her tears away with the back of her hand and let out a soft, teary laugh full of joy and relief. “Thank you,” she said, her voice trembling with pure, heartfelt emotion. “Thank you so much for this.”
She took a deep breath to steady herself, then reached into her pocket with renewed energy. “Now give me his number. I’ll contact him right away and bring him here as soon as possible.”
Love rattled off Asher’s number without wasting any time. The nurse didn’t hesitate for a second and made the call immediately, her hands moving with purpose.
Less than thirty minutes later, the door to the ward flew open with a burst of energy.
Asher rushed in, breathing hard from racing over as fast as he could. The second his eyes landed on Love sitting there in the hospital bed, every bit of his usual calm shattered into pieces.
He crossed the room in a few long, urgent strides and pulled her straight into his strong arms, holding her so incredibly tight it felt like he would never let go no matter what.
“Love…” His voice was raw with deep worry and fear that he couldn’t hide. “What the hell are you doing here in this place?”
Wrapped up in his warm, protective embrace, Love suddenly felt how bone-deep exhausted she really was after everything she had endured.
For the first time since she had ended up trapped in this hospital, she didn’t want to pull away even a little.
His familiar strength wrapped around her like a shield, making her feel truly safe in a way nothing else in the world could, but a heavy wave of guilt settled deep in her chest like a stone.
She couldn’t believe she had almost thrown everything real away by chasing after someone who had never truly loved her back.
She slowly loosened her hold on him just enough to breathe and forced a small, tired smile onto her face. “It’s a really long story, Asher, and none of it is good.”
Her eyes drifted down to her bandaged leg with a sigh. “My sprained ankle is what got me here in the first place and started this whole mess.”
Asher immediately looked down at her injury. The thick bandage wrapped tightly around her ankle made his expression harden instantly with anger.
His brows pulled together as waves of fury and worry crashed together violently inside him. “Then why the hell was I told you were in serious trouble and needed me right away?”
Love opened her mouth, ready to explain everything that had happened in painful detail. But before she could get even a single word out, another voice suddenly cut through the room like a knife.
“Love.” Danny stood confidently in the doorway wearing a warm, charming smile. “I heard your surgery was scheduled for an hour from now, so I left the set immediately and came straight here to be with you.”
He walked into the room like he owned the place, totally clueless about the heavy tension already thick in the air. “I wanted to stay right by your side through it all.” His smile softened as he looked at her. “Are you feeling nervous about it?”
Asher slowly turned toward the newcomer with sharp focus. Confusion filled his face as he studied the handsome guy standing across the room.
He recognized him almost immediately. Danny, the famous actor he had seen on TV and in movies plenty of times before.
His eyes flicked back and forth between Danny and Love, trying desperately to make sense of what the hell was going on between them. “Excuse me…” His voice stayed calm on the surface, but there was a sharp, dangerous edge underneath it. “What’s going on here exactly?” His gaze locked on Love again with intense concern. “And what surgery are they talking about?”
Danny blinked in surprise, then lightly tapped his forehead with a casual gesture. “Oh.” A sheepish smile crossed his face. “Where are my manners in all this?”
Without waiting for any kind of invitation, he walked deeper into the ward and casually sat right beside Love on the hospital bed like it was the most natural thing in the world.
He smiled politely at Asher. “She agreed to save my mother by donating her kidney, so I proposed to marry her in return as a way to show how grateful I am.” He looked genuinely puzzled by the whole situation.
“Didn’t she tell you about any of this?” His eyes carefully studied Asher’s face. “Are you her brother or something?”
The color drained from Love’s face in an instant. Her heart nearly stopped beating as she looked over at Asher with rising panic.
His jaw tightened visibly, and his hands slowly curled into tight fists at his sides. The dark, stormy look in his eyes made it crystal clear he was only seconds away from smashing something in pure rage.
“Asher…” she said hurriedly, reaching out for him as panic flooded her voice completely. “It’s not what you think at all. Please let me explain everything before you get the wrong idea.”
