Chapter 94 He's A Gold Digger
Chapter 94 He's A Gold Digger
EILEEN POV:
He had been a parasite living off his parents before, and then he thought I was soft enough to allow it as well. In his dreams.
“Are you calling him a golddigger?” Her voice raised over the conventional levels of societal politeness.
“No, I am calling him a spineless freak who kidnapped my two children and my sister all in an attempt to get a few million dollars from me.”
I heard an audible gasp coming from behind me. Dan hadn’t expected me to speak up.
Silence.
“A few million dollars?” His father whispered.
“Did you think he wanted to see my daughter?” I questioned. “You’ve raised him for twenty years… Has Arthur ever thought of anyone but himself?”
No response.
“But he is the father of your child…”
I couldn’t deny that. Be it for better or worse, he had contributed to Bethany coming to this world. She was my present from the universe.
“He is the sperm donor, but not Bethany’s father.”
Her eyes widened. “You can’t keep the child from him.”
“Oh, I had no intention of keeping the child from any of you. But he blackmailed me and let me know that my daughter was not safe in his presence. Now, I will not let him anywhere near her. And I will use damn near everything I can find to make sure the court rules in my favor.”
His father placed a hand on her shoulder. “Christine, stop. You know he did wrong…”
I leaned back, waiting.
He cleared his throat. “I will ensure he doesn’t bother you anymore. Can you find the kindness in your heart to drop the charges?”
So, that was how shameless they would be. I took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of my nose.
“This is no longer a civil lawsuit. Your son committed a crime. The cops have arrested him on charges of stalking, assault with a weapon, multiple counts of kidnapping a minor, holding a hostage, evading the cops, and attempted murder. Even if Eileen were a saint, she couldn’t convince the government to help your son.”
The couple stiffened. “You keep saying he tried to murder–”
“He wielded a knife and cut someone. And he drove on the highway with infants in the back and no baby seat. It’s a miracle they didn’t get into a car wreck,” Dan barked.
I winced. I didn’t even want to know. I had refused to see the footage even though Dominic had already gotten his hands on them.
“Surely–”
“There is nothing I can do,” I bit out. “I met the two of you because you were Bethany’s biological grandparents and I didn’t think you were like Arthur. But I understand that you enabled a lot of his bad behavior. I no longer feel comfortable speaking to you.”
The chair scraped as I stood up.
The older woman shot to her feet, reaching forward to stop me. Dan was quick to block her hand.
“Surely, you won’t keep our granddaughter from us.”
Kindness was not meant for people like this.
“Right now, I have no idea if you are like Arthur or helped him in this scheme in some way,” I told them frankly. “I was open to Bethany having more family, but I changed my mind. If you want to continue fighting the custody battle, I will ask my lawyer to contact you.”
Arthur’s dad stood up, too. “Please don’t listen to my wife,” he tried to smooth things over. “We mean no harm. We are excited and baffled by everything that has happened. And we would like to see… Bethany… supervised of course.”
I smiled. I wanted to tell them I would ask Dominic and get back to them. But Dominic would let me make the decision. Why delay?
“I will have my lawyer contact you.”
I didn’t want to waste any time on them.
I turned around and walked out. Faintly, I heard the older woman complain that I was the reason her son had gone to such extreme lengths. I didn’t hear Dan follow me, when I looked over my shoulder, I saw him waiting in the room, speaking to the couple.
“I advise you to think before you speak to the media. My boss has already pressed charges against multiple outlets and individuals who tried to defame Miss Sharp.”
It was a warning and an advice. Now, we had to wait and see what they did.
Dan caught up to me soon.
“So that’s why you insisted on coming with me… to warn them off,” I said with a slow ease.
Dan chuckled. “I regret coming now. You handled yourself pretty well!” he complimented. “Where did the sweet pushover go?” He patted my back.
I shrugged. “I have been thinking recently. If I stood my ground more, people wouldn’t mess with me.”
Dan nodded. “That’s half of what a bodyguard does. We act tough so that no one tries to cross us. And then some crazy people like Arthur try. They rarely succeed, though.” He shook his head. “Which reminds me, I need to find a team for Leigh.”
I furrowed my brows in confusion. “They were fired?”
Dan shook his head. “We can’t fire those people. The team she took was hired by her ex-husband. They weren’t the best… the cheapskate probably didn’t think too much about it.”
I sighed. “Is he still on vacation?”
Dan groaned. “Of course. He called and asked if the girls were hurt. When he realized they were fine, he hung up and went ahead with his vacation.”
What a bastard.
“No wonder Leigh and I get along so well. We share similar miseries,” I grumbled.
Dan laughed. “Don’t let her hear that. She might just form an alliance with you and make you swear off men. What will happen to Dominic then?”
We joked on our way back. I heard the cops discussing how some media had found out about us being in the VIP ward and almost breaking in. But the attempt had been thwarted.
“Don’t worry about a thing, Eileen. No one will reach you after this.”
