Chapter 89 Who Are They Taking?
Chapter 89 Who Are They Taking?
EILEEN POV:
“How… Why did you follow?” I asked slowly.
“She grabbed Harry and Bethany and threatened to hurt them if he was pursued,” she said softly. “I… I just followed them without thinking. If Harry and Bethany were in the car without me… I can’t imagine.” She shook her head, as if trying to shake the images off.
“I’m sorry.”
She blinked in surprise. “Why are you sorry?”
“I’ve brought you nothing but trouble. I’m sorry, Lucy.”
How could I thank her enough for throwing herself in the line of fire? But I could apologize for dragging her into the mess that was my life. And it was my own making too. And now she had to clean up after me.
“That’s my niece and nephew!” she insisted. “I didn’t grab that knife and stab him because I was busy holding onto Bethany and Harry while he weaved through traffic.”
Yes, there were no baby seats. She was right.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude.
“Did he do anything?” I was afraid to ask.
Lucy contemplated the answer for a long time. “Apart from reminiscing about your time together and cursing you… not really.” She gulped. “He did wave that gun around a lot.”
She made it sound trivial, but I could only imagine the fear she must have felt. How could I ever make it up to her?
“You don’t have to thank me or make it up to me,” she replied. I jerked up, my eyes widening. “I know you. I know that look on your face. You think you are the reason this is happening, but it’s not. He was the one who ruined your relationship and wanted nothing to do with Bethany. And then he came back and tortured you until you had no choice but to fight back. None of this is your fault. It’s because he was always a terrible person and we are just now finding out the extent of it.”
And then she quietened. “I think you should talk to Dominic. And check on Harry.”
My heart skipped a beat. “Did something happen to Harry?”
She shook her head. “Not that I could tell. But they will rush him to the hospital. You should go with him…”
My eyes fell to Bethany who was still in my arms. She clutched onto my clothes like there was no tomorrow. And though I knew she would be alright in Lucy’s company, my instincts screamed at me to be with her.
With Dominic by Harry’s side, he would be fine. Dominic would have his best interest at heart.
I shook my head slowly. “I’ll ride with Bethany. Could you go with them?” I still wanted someone to be with Harry. Someone who could handle Harry if Dominic couldn’t. Moreover, Lucy knew his habits more than the EMTs and Dominic did.
Lucy nodded. “Don’t worry about them.”
But I was worried about her.
“Sorry,” the word escaped my mouth again.
She shook her head and then turned. There was a slight shake in her stance. She wasn’t completely fine, but she held on because I told her to. I pressed my face into Bethany’s hair, allowing her familiar milky scent to soothe me.
I knew I was forgetting something, but I couldn’t tell what it was.
I saw a group of cops flocking to the last ambulance and craned my neck to see what was happening. “Who are they taking?” I asked a passing EMT.
They sighed. “It’s the assailant. He is also being taken to the hospital.”
They didn’t say anything more. Instead, the door was closed and the ambulance started. I was escorted by two EMTs, who tried to keep me talking, trying to get more information about Bethany and I.
I spoke to them, allowing their words to fill the silence that would otherwise haunt me.
When we were led into the hospital and a big examination room, I finally snapped out of my trance. Lucy was nowhere to be seen, but from the corner of my eyes, I saw someone sit down beside me. I turned my head slowly and realized it was Dominic, cradling Harry in his arms.
“Are you alright?” he whispered.
I blinked, wondering why he would ask me that. “Yes,” I said slowly.
The nurse perked up. “Done.” She drew a deep breath and put the vial of blood away. “We have to take her for the scans while we run some preliminary tests on the baby.”
She was slow with me, her eyes scanning over my face as she spoke the instructions.
“Right.” I didn’t understand what she expected me to do next.
I felt a warm hand on my shoulder and looked to my side. “Someone needs to go with Bethany. But they need you to stay here with Harry,” Dominic told me softly.
“Oh.”
“Do you want to do that?”
The question caught me off guard. “Yeah,” I replied.
He extended his arm. “Bethany, baby. Can you come here?” he said softly.
I half-expected Bethany to ignore him. But to my surprise, she pulled away from my chest and stared at Dominic for a moment. She stared at his hand before reaching her small fist towards him. A small smile spread across Dominic’s lips.
“Dada,” she said softly as she reached over, half her body hanging off me. “See baby.”
Dominic struggled to keep his balance. I leaped into action, turning by body and letting Bethany move towards him while I took Harry and clutched him to my chest.
Bethany went to him with ease. I turned my body further, allowing Bethany to check on Harry before she settled down. So, she wasn’t only scared, she was also worried about her little brother. But she couldn’t understand her own emotions until Harry was right beside her.
The nurse allowed us a moment, before they could no longer let us be. Bethany would fuss, I was sure. But she remained silent and content in Dominic’s arms as she was taken further and further away from me.
I looked down at the bundle in my arms and saw Harry staring at me silently. He didn’t cry. He didn’t smile. And I didn’t know what he was feeling.
