Chapter 98 The Fear of Losing Him Again

Chapter 98 The Fear of Losing Him Again
Soraya

I lay in bed with Evander, my head resting on his chest. He was asleep, and I just listened to his heartbeat. I inhaled his scent, and I had missed it so much. He looked so peaceful while he slept, but I couldn’t sleep.

I kept storing all these memories in my head because I was so afraid that he was going to go again, and I wouldn’t see him. I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. And it killed me.

That fear—it was like a cloud looming over me, telling me that he was going to go again. They were going to come for him again.

Since he came back, he hadn’t given me any straight explanation.

We were no longer in school. We were in one of his mansions because, apparently, he has houses everywhere. The house was beautiful, but I couldn’t bring myself to enjoy it. I was just too afraid.

I had to pull myself together several times just to enjoy the moment, but I couldn’t.

I was scared, but that fear wouldn’t let me be.

I placed my head back on his chest, listening to his heartbeat, and slowly, he began calming me down. He shifted slightly on the bed, but he didn’t wake up.

I closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep, but I couldn’t, so I got off the bed.

I was hungry anyway, so I made my way downstairs.

His house looked like no one had ever lived in it, and I just hoped there was food in the kitchen. If not, I was going to die of starvation.

The silence in the house was deafening. Every step I took echoed. Usually, the quiet always comforted me, but this one was far from comforting. The house was massive and made me feel even smaller than I already was.

I wrapped my arms around myself. Everything felt new. The cold bit into my skin. I walked to the kitchen—the countertops, everything marble and new.

I opened the fridge, praying that there was food. And thank the Goddess, the fridge was stocked with juice, fruit, everything somebody could ever need.

I quickly grabbed a jar of orange juice and some fruits. I leaned against the counter and took a bite of the apple. I chewed slowly, but the sound filled the house.

It felt like Evander wasn’t telling me everything. Usually, he kept secrets—that was for sure—but he promised me no more secrets, no more lies. I didn’t know why, but it felt like he was lying to me. I didn’t need a bond to tell me that. I had known Evander long enough.

Was I not trustworthy enough?

A part of me didn’t want to believe that.

Then a thought hit me.

What if he was no longer in the room when I got back?

No.

I placed the apple down quickly and rushed back to the room. My heart clenched tightly.

I opened the door with so much force it startled Evander awake.

I stood at the door, panicked, while he sat up, his entire body on alert.

“Soraya,” he said my name, his voice rough with sleep, but his eyes were wide open, scanning the entire room like he was ready for war.

I couldn’t speak immediately. I just stood there, staring at him. I placed a hand on my chest. The pain spread through my body.

“What’s wrong?” he stood up, walking towards me slowly.

“I thought… I thought…” My voice cracked. “I thought you were gone.”

His expression softened immediately.

“Gone?” he said gently.

I nodded. “I thought I wouldn’t see you again. I thought you would leave me.”

I didn’t know when I began crying.

He pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly.

“Baby, I’m not going anywhere, okay? I’m here. I promise you, I am not going anywhere. I am never going anywhere. I will always, always be here.”

I sobbed into his chest, and he just held me in his arms. These were tears I had been holding back for so long. I tried to be strong, not to cry, but I couldn’t hold them back anymore.

“When I was in the underground,” I began speaking, clearing my throat, “the wolfsbane messed with me so much, and I saw you get married to…” I stopped.

“To who?” he asked.

“Bianca,” I said. “I was hallucinating so much, and it scared me. You got married to her, and… you didn’t know me. Nobody cared about me, Evander.”

He pulled me in tightly. “I am so sorry. I should have been there to protect you.”

I pulled back to look at him. “You can’t protect me from everything. You going away was my fault. And I just wish that I didn’t bring so much chaos wherever I go.”

He smiled. “Chaos?” he repeated. “You do not bring chaos, Soraya. Your presence brings love, joy, happiness. Soraya… you complete me.”

I stayed in his arms like that. Then slowly, he leaned down, capturing my lips in a kiss, and he dragged the air out of my lungs. When he pulled back, he pressed his forehead against mine.

“I love you.”

“I love you more than everything in this entire world. Please don’t leave me again.”

“I promise you, I’ll never leave again. I would always be here, protect you, be by your side, love you until eternity.”

The way he spoke so gently, so calm, gave me goosebumps. I couldn’t stop myself from smiling.

“Can I ask you a question?”

“Of course, my love. Ask me anything.”

“You didn’t tell me how you got back. How did you just appear in my room? You haven’t told me anything. It was just like you disappeared and you reappeared, Evander. I need answers, and my head can’t keep coming up with scenarios that don’t make sense just because I’m trying to fill that gap of not knowing.”

His expression shifted slightly before he masked it with a smile.

“I’ll tell you everything, but it’s really not that important.”

From his body language, I knew for certain he was hiding something and lying about it.
