Chapter 97 Loyalty in Question

Chapter 97 Loyalty in Question
Milo

“Whatever it is, tell me now,” Evander said, and I could see how controlled he tried to make his voice, but at the same time, I saw the fear. He couldn’t hide that.

“Not here, Evander. Not here,” I said a little bit louder. “Soraya needs to be present.”

“Fine,” he said, but not in a rude or angry manner. “Let’s go.”

He turned around and I followed behind him. I actually liked the school without the students. They were noisy, annoying, and everywhere. I knew the field trip was only for a couple of hours at most, but I wished they had gone for like three days. This school should really be going on more field trips.

Evander’s hair rested on his shoulders. I didn’t notice how long he had grown it out, but it looked good and healthy. I subconsciously touched the back of my neck because I had always wanted long hair, but I knew that was going to be impossible because I didn’t like hair touching my shoulders.

When the door to Soraya’s room opened, she got up from where she sat quickly. Evander held his arms open for her, and she hugged him tightly, and he just held her. I missed the both of them together. He kissed her head softly and whispered into her ear, “Milo has something to tell us,” but he made sure it was loud enough for me to hear.

I cleared my throat.

“When we were at the underground—”

“Wait,” Evander stopped me immediately. His face was a mixture of disgust and anger. “You were also sent to the underground?”

“Evander, that’s not the important part.”

“He was sent there because of me, and he only did it so he could stay with me,” Soraya whispered softly. “And I am so grateful.”

“When we were there, one of the Viremont brothers appeared. Well, more like walked in. I’m not sure, but I was too weak to stop him.”

They both stared at me, confused.

“What?”

“He did something to her.”

“Who did?”

“One of them. He came into the cell and touched Soraya’s head. He said something…” I paused. I wanted to tell Soraya, but I didn’t know how. It had been eating me alive from the inside.

“He said his name was Bartholomew.”

Evander frowned. Then he turned to Soraya.

“He was the one that severed our bond.”

“What?”

“No wonder they were all acting weird,” Evander said. “And I never saw Bartholomew before I left. He wasn’t talking to anybody—more like he was talking to himself.”

I walked out of the room, giving the both of them privacy. Saying what I had witnessed actually felt freeing in a way, and it felt like the burden on my chest was gone.

Now that Evander was back, I wasn’t sure about my plans of leaving anymore, but at the same time, I wasn’t convinced on staying either.

I walked slowly down the hall. My life wasn’t supposed to be this complicated. I swore my loyalty to Evander for the rest of my days, but right now, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life.

My footsteps echoed through the quiet halls. My loyalty has never been a question because he saved my life, and I swore my life to him. But with how messy everything was becoming, I was confused. I hadn’t expected everything to be perfection. I knew there were times where things would be fucking messed up, but I didn’t know I would want something else. I didn’t know I would crave a life outside being Evander’s beta. And that scared me. It scared me a lot.

And I didn’t know exactly how to face him and tell him this, or should I just leave?

No, I shook my head. A part of me prayed he would come back, but the other part of me couldn’t find a solution for if he didn't come back and I thought I had it figured out.

Soraya and I will leave this place, start our lives somewhere else, and maybe I could eventually find my mate, and Soraya would do whatever she wants and be free of always being called a killer.

My plan was selfish, I knew that for sure, because Soraya would never actually properly get over Evander, and that was something I would have to live with.

I ruffled my hair, messing it up. It felt like I was going insane.

I stared quietly into the empty schoolyard. It was a bit windy, and I felt trapped in my own head. I loved the quiet.

Immediately, I looked to my right. Evander stood there. I hadn’t realized when he even came here or how long he had been standing beside me.

“What’s wrong?” he asked quietly.

I shook my head. “Nothing. Just enjoying how quiet this school is without all the children.”

Evander smiled. Then he spoke again.

“I’m not buying into your lie. Talk to me. What is going on with you?”

“I assure you, Evander, I am perfectly fine,” I lied, but he could see through it.

“I know you, Milo, more than you know yourself, and I know when you’re lying to me, but I’m not going to push. You can tell me when you’re ready. And I want you to know that I am more than grateful. Soraya told me everything—how you stood up for her, how you protected her—and I can never thank you enough.”

“You know I’m willing to do anything for you, Alpha. Your mate is my priority, and I care about her the same way you do.”

“Thank you.”

We stayed quiet for a moment.

“You know I wouldn’t be able to survive without you, right?”

“You’re a powerful Alpha. Whether I am around or not, you would do great.”

He laughed. “We both know that is a lie. If you weren’t here, only the Goddess knows what would have happened to my mate.”

“Well, good thing I’m here then.”

“And Milo,” he said, his tone turning serious, “I promise you Victor is going to pay for his crimes.”
