Chapter 96 Confession

Chapter 96 Confession
Evander

I stood there, staring at the door even though Kieron was gone. I slowly turned to my father.

“What happened to Rhea?”

“She got attacked,” he said softly.

“How?” I asked worriedly.

“She was in the staff quarters.”

“What the fuck was she doing there?”

“I know you’re not going to like this, but she became a staff.”

“What do you mean? Why? She doesn’t need the money. She has enough to last her for a lifetime. I made sure of that.”

“Evander, she’s not doing it for the money.”

“How was it possible that she got attacked? In the staff quarters?”

“I don’t know.” He shook his head. “It was a mysterious creature and it almost killed her. We have no idea how it got into the school and how it was able to attack her without any camera footage. Nothing.”

“What the hell?” I mumbled to myself.

That was when it hit me.

“You were the one.”

“That was why you sent Soraya to the underground, isn’t it?”

“She was the only explanation, Evander. There was no record of her being in her room when it happened.”

I walked to the door. “This conversation isn’t done. I have to go see her, but I’ll be back.”

I walked out of the office, slamming the door behind me. I headed for the staff quarters. I felt an unsettling chill run through my body because till now, there was no logical explanation for what was happening in this school. I promised parents that I would come to the end of whatever this was, but it’s been months and still nothing.

The creature that wasn’t caught on camera—no footage, nothing. Damn. This only proves one thing: students in this school are no longer safe until the monster responsible for all of this is caught and killed. And I was pretty sure it was the same monster Soraya was accused of being. That was the same monster that did such a horrible thing.

I had almost gotten to the staff quarters when I heard a familiar voice call from behind me. I stopped, then turned around slowly.

It was Rhea.

She held books in her hand, dressed in a long skirt. Her hair was tied up, and she looked a bit pale and thin. She ran towards me, enveloping me in a tight hug, and I held her back. We stayed like that for over five minutes. She just kept tightening her grip on me like she thought I wasn’t real.

“Are you real?” she whispered.

“Of course I am,” I replied with a small smile.

“I’ve missed you so much. It’s been months… Evander, the months…” Her voice cracked like she was about to start crying.

“I know,” I replied gently.

Then, after a couple of minutes, she pulled back.

“I heard what happened to you. Are you okay?” She sniffed, pushing the strands of hair on her face behind her ears.

“I am.”

“What exactly happened, Rhea?”

“I almost died,” she said quietly. “If it wasn’t for Milo and Kieron, who rushed me to the infirmary when they did…” She trailed off. “I couldn’t hear properly, Evander. There is something in this school, and it’s going to kill us all.”

I remained quiet.

“That won’t happen. Whatever monster is in my school, I am going to put an end to it. That’s why I’m back.”

“Are you sure you can?”

“Excuse me?”

“No offense, Evander, but… are you really sure you can put an end to your mate?”

I moved back from her slightly.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“Evander, she is responsible, and you’re just allowing a monster—a killer—to walk free when she is supposed to be put down.”

“How dare you say such a thing about my mate?”

She slowly stepped forward. “I missed you so much. I’ve been so worried about you,” she said, totally abandoning the conversation we had going on. “Evander, you are different now.”

I didn’t say a word.

“Your hair is longer and you look even better—”

I didn’t let her finish that statement. I just walked away. I couldn’t deal with Rhea’s shenanigans right now. The fact that she was fine and alive—I was good with that.

I headed back to Soraya’s room, wondering why the school was scanty. I knew it wasn’t time for the holidays just yet.

“Is it really you?”

Just like earlier, a familiar voice came from behind me. But this one made me smile. I turned around and Milo stood there, a big smile on his lips.

“It is, friend.”

Milo placed his hands in his pockets gently and slowly walked towards me. When he was standing inches away from me, he spoke, “Good to have you back.”

I didn’t respond to that. I just pulled him in for a hug. I missed him so much. He wasn’t one to show emotions, but from how he held me back, I knew he missed me too.

When Milo pulled back, his eyes were glossy, and I knew he was holding back tears.

“You miss me that bad, huh?” I couldn’t help but smile.

“Oh, stop it.” I laughed. “It’s fine to miss me. I’m very hot.” I winked at him.

“I’m not Soraya, please. I’m not in love with you.”

I didn’t respond to that. I just smiled at my beta.

Then the smile on his face dropped.

“Has she seen you?”

“Yes, she has.”

“How did you get back? How did you escape them?”

The moment he asked that, the little bit of relief I felt was gone.

“Let’s not talk about that now.”

He stepped closer.

“Did they let you go, or did you escape?”

“Why is the school empty? Where is everybody?” I asked instead of replying to his question.

“They left this morning for a field trip. I don’t know, but I think they went to the sacred graveyard.”

“Why?”

“Some history bullshit. Believe me, I do not keep tabs on the students. It has to do with the teachers.”

“And why didn’t Soraya go?”

“I tried convincing her, but you know how she is. And…” He hesitated. “She isn’t okay, Evander.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, frowning.

“There’s something I need to tell you, but not just you—the both of you.”
