Chapter 108 The hot begins
Evander
I drove back to school. Soraya didn’t say much, just sat down, staring out the window without looking at me.
I reached for her hand. That was when she turned to look at me. It felt like she was pulled out of a haze.
“Are you okay?” I asked.
She nodded quickly. “Yeah, I just need to sleep.”
I smiled at her.
As I drove, I kept watching her from the corner of my eyes. She looked sad. Her skin looked slightly pale, her hair falling down her face. She had taken off her scrunchie and shoes when we left the house.
My mate was so beautiful, even with the fact that she looked so sad. She was ethereal. Her beauty was like nothing I had ever seen in my life. And I didn’t know—maybe it was because she was my mate—but I had seen a lot of beautiful women in my lifetime, and Soraya… nobody came close to her when it came to beauty.
We got back to school, and she just got out of the car. She didn’t say a word to me. She headed straight to her dorm, and I went to my office. I just concluded that maybe she was tired, and I really didn’t want to stress her. She had been through a lot emotionally, and I didn’t want to put her through more.
I sat in my office and just stared into nothing. Images of her lifeless body wouldn’t let me be. It haunted my dreams. It haunted me even when I was awake. I was so scared. And even till now, I didn’t want to let her out of my sight because I was still afraid that something like that would happen and I wouldn’t be there to protect her.
I stared at the mark on my hand. I contemplated telling her about it, but I didn’t want her to have a heart attack. Since I came back, I had been lying to her, and it had been eating me alive. I wanted to tell her everything. I wanted to tell her the truth about the mark, about how I had escaped, but I didn’t know where to start from. I was afraid.
I buried my face in my hands. And when I lifted my head up, Gregory stood in front of me.
“What?” I said as I stood up from my chair slowly.
He was dressed in a black suit as always, his hand resting in his pocket, a smile on his face.
“Hello, Evander,” he said.
“Are you here?”
“It’s not all about me. I’m not. I just projected my consciousness here.”
I sighed, then sat back down.
“Don’t you want me here?” he asked.
“Of course I do.”
And that was actually my honest truth. Gregory deserved better, not to be with those assholes he called brothers. But if he was here, they would be able to find me, and we didn’t want that.
“How are you doing, Evander?”
“I’m good,” I replied. “And you?”
He shook his head. “Don’t worry about me.”
I knew he was going through hell in the hands of Ladarius and Bartholomeo, but he didn’t want to say it.
“How long is this shield going to last?”
I showed him my hand.
“Months,” he said. “I would have made it last longer, but… I don’t have that kind of power. And you need to find the blade, and you need to find it quickly, Evander, because my brothers are on to you. All their watchdogs are on your scent. Thanks to Resiju, they won’t be able to find you, but any slip-up, they will get you. And believe me, you do not want that.”
He did speak for a couple of minutes, then he said, “I have to go now. Be safe, okay?”
“Thank you so much.”
“My pleasure,” he said with a warm smile. “I can’t wait for you to find the blade that puts me out of my misery once and for all.”
And with that, he was gone.
I couldn’t believe somebody with immortality would want to give it up so easily. But he looked fed up, and in a way, I kind of understood him.
So I’d do what he said—find the blade—but it was proving more difficult than I had expected. There were no clues, nothing.
I just felt lost.
After staying in my office for what felt like forever, I walked out and went to get some air. I couldn’t keep myself cooped up in that office before it choked me to death.
I found Milo standing by one of the balconies I usually frequented when I wanted to be alone. There was something different about Milo. I couldn’t place my finger on it. He wasn’t as chatty as he was before. He felt too distant, and I didn’t know how to reach him, and it bothered me so much.
“I didn’t see you during the burial.”
“Oh, I was there,” he said. “I just stood at the back. Her death was really sad, and she had so much to live for.”
“True,” I replied. “It’s true.”
“Milo, can I talk to you about something real quick?”
He turned to me. “Of course.”
I showed him the sigil on my hand.
“What’s this?” he asked, analyzing it carefully.
“I haven’t told anybody about this. Not even Soraya. But this sigil… if it fades, the Veramons are coming for me.”
“What?”
“This sigil hides me from them. They can’t sense me, they can’t find me. They can’t even see me.”
“Wow, that is a powerful spell.”
“I know, right? But if it fades…”
“That’s why… you need the blade, right?”
“I know that. I really need it.”
“And you never really told me what happened with Soraya. One moment she was dead, the other she’s back alive. Evander, what are you not telling me?”
“So I said each in the back of my head. I actually thought it would be best if I handled it myself and not get you involved.”
“Evander, when have you ever handled things yourself and not dragged me in?”
He shook his head. Well, he was right about that, but in this, I wanted to protect him. He seemed really fragile, and I had put him through a lot of bullshit, but I knew I couldn’t do this without him.
“When Soraya died, it was actually Sarah that pulled her out of her body, and she revealed my theory. It’s actually a rabbit wolf spirit that is hitching a ride in somebody’s body, and that person is a student of the school.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” Milo said.
“I wish I was, brother. I really wish, but I am not. And believe me when I tell you, just thinking about it kills me every time.”
“So how do we go about it? How do we pull the spirit out?”
“I don’t know. I really do not have a single clue.”
“So it wasn’t Soraya all along?”
“I told you it wasn’t her. No one believed me.”
“But wait,” Milo said, “whoever the spirit is possessing, does the person know?”
“Usually,” I replied, but I wasn’t really sure because I hadn’t done proper research on the rabbit wolf.
It was way too demonic even for me, and right now it had been in my school longer than I had expected.
“Whatever it is, we are going to handle it together,” Milo said. “But for the love of God, the blade, Evander… I do not think it’s on this plane of existence.”
