Chapter 172 Genetics
Chapter 172 Genetics
Armond
Last night was rather rough. Bri had quite a bit of trouble with nightmares, and so she’s tired this morning. She’s also having guilty feelings about keeping us awake, no matter how much we tell her we want to be there for her. She is still at the dining table with a fruit smoothie, with a grumpy, tired look on her face.
My father called a while ago and told us that he, Paul, and Maximus were inviting themselves for breakfast and they would be here soon. So, with that in mind, I’m fixing a bunch of pancakes. They have a tendency to go over well with a crowd, plus the babies like them, and we are trying to introduce more and more regular foods and baby foods into their diets.
They are currently in the living room in the makeshift playpen area we set up for them. I can tell they’re getting a bit cranky, so they are hungry. I am putting a pancake out to cool so we can feed them if my father and the others don’t get here soon.
Allen is watching them play with a cup of coffee in his hands, trying to wake up, just like me. I’m over here nursing my own cup of coffee. Bri keeps looking at my cup with a sour expression. She is only allowed one cup per day, and she said she was saving it to have with her pancakes, but she wants one now, so she’s rather put out right now.
When there’s a knock on the door, Allen jumps up, coffee in hand, and heads for the door. I had poured the first pot of coffee into the carafe knowing we would need extra, and I’m glad I did when my dad comes into the kitchen and immediately pours a cup from the carafe. Paul and Maximus are close behind.
“I’m almost finished with all of the pancakes. Bri is at the table, and I’ll bring these over in a moment. Go ahead and sit down and join Bri and Allen.” All three nod.
I gather all of the pancakes on the platter that I made, as well as the refilled carafe of coffee, and head to the table to join everyone. When I get there, they all eagerly grab pancakes, and apparently they are hungry, and I’m glad I made a lot.
We have gotten the kids in their high chairs and have given them tiny cut-up bites of pancake, and they seem to be enjoying them along with the pieces of fruit that Bri cut up for them. Allen had gotten their sippy cups of milk as my hands were full. They are baby babbling and content, and I love seeing that, and with as much as everyone around the table is smiling at them, I’m in good company.
“Okay, Derek and Paul told me about your idea to call Dr. Mitchell to find out if Dekon’s plan is even physically possible. While that might be a good idea, I was thinking a better one would be to talk to an actual geneticist. They would know more about the actual DNA combination thing. I happen to have one that I know fairly well. So, I wanted to call him this morning and speak with him. He might need to ask you guys some questions if that is okay.” I look at Bri with wide eyes, not having thought about that, but it’s an extremely good idea.
“That sounds good, Dad. I just hadn’t thought about that. Since I know Dr. Mitchell, she was who I thought of, but your idea sounds better. I would be willing to help however I could, but I’m afraid my knowledge of all of that crap is very much non-existent, basically.” He nods.
“He’ll more likely need what was said last night, and what Dekon has both done and said in the past, but Bri, he’s not going to be asking personal questions, so don’t think you need to speak about any of that stuff.” She nodded, and I saw her sigh, so she was probably worried about that.
When Breakfast is over, and we’re cleaning up, Maximus goes and calls the guy he knows. They speak for a bit, and then he calls Sean. So, it looks like they are trying to set up a video call of some kind, which makes the most sense as there are so many of us who want to be involved in the call.
“Bishop and Sean are coming over to be part of the call with Dr. Anishya in about half an hour.” I nod, and I see Allen and Bri do the same.
We are parked in the living room, watching the babies play and interact with each other and us. I can’t help but smile as I watch my little ones. I am anxious to see the new baby boys and see how they grow and become part of our family as well.
When there’s another knock on the door, my dad gets up and rushes to answer it. Bishop and Sean walk into the room with him following closely behind. “Are we all ready to get this party started?” Sean is watching us all as he asks that.
He gets his laptop set up and ready, and then Maximus is calling on his phone. They talk back and forth, and then soon enough, the big screen on the wall lights up, showing a small man in business attire and a white medical jacket. It appears he’s in some kind of lab, but no one else is in the room with him at the moment.
“Dr. Anishya, thank you for agreeing to speak with us. This is an extremely important issue we need to get resolved, and to do that we need all the information we can get.” The man on the screen nods.
“I’ve sent my assistants out of the lab for a while so we can keep this as confidential as possible.” I see nods all around the room.
“Okay, well, I had filled you in on a lot of what had been happening and what this crazy man, Dekon, said he is planning to do or working on or whatever.” He nods.
“Yes, and I can tell you what he is attempting is different. I would have to see his experiment data to really know more. Now, if he is attempting to breed different species, some of that is very possible, and that is the whole way we get hybrids. However, most hybrids are simply two compatible species. If he is attempting to Frankenstein multiple species, some of which are not compatible, he could have problems with successful Gene cohesion. Most likely his experiments will self-terminate, as they are not viable.”
I thought about that. “How can we tell?”
He looked right at me. “Get the data or a specimen.”
“So, basically we need to raid his lab, which we were already planning on doing,” Bri said, and the man nodded, so I guess now we knew what we needed to do.
