Chapter 151 The Secret That Changed Everything
Six months before the wedding, Lenora thought the biggest challenge in her life would be choosing between ivory and white roses.
She should have known better.
Her life with Lenold had taught her one thing.
The universe loved dramatic timing.
It happened on a quiet Sunday morning.
Rain tapped against the loft windows in SoHo.
Lenold was still asleep, one muscular arm draped over her waist.
Lenora carefully slipped out of bed and padded to the bathroom.
For the third morning in a row, nausea rolled through her.
At first, she blamed stress.
Then late nights.
Then bad takeout.
But as she stared at her reflection in the mirror, one possibility became impossible to ignore.
Her period was late.
Very late.
Her hands trembled as she reached for the pregnancy test she had hidden in the cabinet the day before.
Three minutes later, she sat on the closed toilet seat staring at two unmistakable pink lines.
Positive.
Lenora’s breath caught.
She looked down at her flat stomach.
Then back at the test.
Then down again.
A laugh burst out of her, quickly followed by tears.
“Oh my God.”
She was pregnant.
When she stepped out of the bathroom, Lenold was sitting up in bed, hair tousled, eyes still heavy with sleep.
The second he saw her face, he was fully awake.
“Baby?”
Lenora’s lips trembled.
She held out the test.
For one heartbeat, he just stared.
Then his eyes widened.
He looked at the test.
At her.
Back at the test.
“Is this…?”
Tears spilled down her cheeks.
“Yes.”
For a second, Lenold didn’t move.
Then he was out of bed and crossing the room.
He cupped her face with shaking hands.
“We’re having a baby?”
Lenora laughed through tears.
“We’re having a baby.”
A strangled sound escaped him.
Something between a laugh and a sob.
He lifted her off the floor and spun her around.
Lenora shrieked.
“Put me down!”
He set her down immediately, his eyes bright with emotion.
“Sorry. Sorry.”
He pressed his forehead to hers.
Then tears slid down his cheeks.
Lenora had seen him cry before.
But never like this.
Pure, overwhelming happiness.
He kissed her.
Once.
Twice.
Then again.
“I love you,” he whispered.
She touched his face.
“I love you too.”
He dropped to his knees in front of her and pressed both hands over her stomach.
His voice broke.
“There’s our baby.”
Lenora burst into fresh tears.
And in that moment, with the love of her life kneeling in front of her and looking at her like she was a miracle, she felt happier than she had ever imagined possible.
The next few days were a blur of secret smiles and private joy.
Lenold became hilariously overprotective.
He took over grocery shopping.
Read parenting articles at three in the morning.
And nearly tackled a cyclist who came too close to Lenora on the sidewalk.
She laughed more than she had in months.
But there was one question hanging between them.
When would they tell everyone?
Lenold wanted to announce it immediately.
Lenora wanted to wait until her first doctor’s appointment.
So they compromised.
They told no one for one week.
Which was exactly six days longer than Lilibeth could tolerate.
Friday night, their friends gathered at the loft for pizza and wedding planning.
Lilibeth was waving fabric swatches like a deranged fairy godmother.
Pamela compared venue costs on her tablet.
Kylen ate garlic knots and offered occasional sarcasm.
Lenora tried to act normal.
She failed.
Apparently, glowing was a real thing.
Lilibeth narrowed her eyes.
“Why do you look suspiciously radiant?”
Lenora nearly choked on her water.
Pamela adjusted her glasses.
“She has been smiling at her phone for the last forty-two minutes.”
Kylen pointed a breadstick at Lenold.
“And he looks like he knows a secret.”
Lenold bit back a grin.
Lenora glanced at him.
He raised an eyebrow.
Now?
She nodded.
Lenold stood and tapped his glass.
“I’d like to make a toast.”
Lilibeth gasped.
“If you two secretly got married without me, I’ll never recover.”
Lenora laughed through nervous tears.
“We didn’t.”
Pamela frowned.
“Then what is this about?”
Lenold took Lenora’s hand.
His thumb brushed over her knuckles.
His voice softened.
“Our family is getting a little bigger.”
For one beat, no one reacted.
Then Lilibeth screamed so loudly that Lenora covered her ears.
Pamela’s jaw dropped.
Kylen sprayed sparkling water across the table.
“You’re pregnant?”
Lenora nodded, tears spilling over.
“Yes.”
Lilibeth burst into sobs and launched herself across the couch.
“I’m going to be an honorary aunt!”
Pamela wiped away tears.
“This is statistically the best possible plot twist.”
Kylen stood and hugged both of them.
“I’m really happy for you.”
Lenora looked around at the people who had become family.
The people who had stood beside them through every disaster and triumph.
And her heart felt impossibly full.
Later that night, after everyone left, Lenora stood at the loft window overlooking the city.
Her hand rested over her stomach.
Lenold came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her.
“Happy?”
She leaned back into him.
“So happy it scares me.”
He kissed her shoulder.
“I know.”
She turned to face him.
“What if I’m not ready?”
His expression softened.
“You don’t have to know everything right now.”
He touched her stomach gently.
“We’ll figure it out.”
She smiled.
“Together?”
He kissed her forehead.
“Always.”
Lenora’s eyes filled.
This was not the way she had imagined things happening.
They weren’t married yet.
Their careers were just beginning.
Life was busier and more complicated than ever.
And yet, standing in Lenold’s arms, none of that felt frightening.
Because they had spent years proving that love was not about perfect timing.
It was about commitment.
Trust.
And choosing each other through every season.
Lenold knelt in front of her once more and pressed a kiss to her belly.
“Hi, little one,” he whispered. “Your mom is the bravest person I know.”
Lenora laughed through tears.
“And your dad is already wrapped around your tiny finger.”
Lenold looked up at her, smiling.
“Absolutely.”
She cupped his face.
“I can’t wait to meet our baby.”
He stood and kissed her softly.
“Me neither.”
Outside, the lights of New York City stretched endlessly into the night.
Inside, Lenora rested her head against Lenold’s chest and listened to the heartbeat that had become the soundtrack of her life.
Their story had started with uncertainty.
Now it was becoming something even more beautiful.
A family.
