Amelia, Run!!!
Amelia, Run!!!
Amelia’s POV
The courtyard dissolved into the distance as I stormed away from Sophie, and her gaping face and the murmur of the other girls. My ring flashed on my finger, a silent reminder of Collins, of the life I was fighting for. I didn’t glance over my shoulder as I crossed campus, striding with purpose, with the adrenaline still rushing in my veins. Elena stood outside the car, her dark ponytail swinging as she opened the door in silence. I got into the back, my hot skin against the cool leather, and she cranked the engine and pulled out of the university with a purr.
The city rushed by — neon signs flickering, taxis honking, students spilling out on the sidewalks. My chest was flooded and clenched, one part triumph and the other part tired. Confronting Sophie had felt liberating, felt like taking back a part of my truth, but it left me raw, like I’d peeled back a layer of me and showed the world. I rested my head on the window, the cool glass against my temple, to see if I could find my breath. My phone vibrated in my hand and I looked down at a message from Collins: Where are you?
Frowning, I hovered my thumb over the screen. I hadn’t mentioned the fight with Sophie, how could he tell something was going on? Perhaps Elena had said I wasn’t in class. Pushing the thought away, I typed a short response: On my way home. Just left campus. My fingers hovered on the keyboard—it felt churlish to leave it like this. I resolved to callinghim later, to hear the sound of his voice, let it ground me.
The car shuddered, a violent jolt that jerked me forward against my seatbelt. My phone slipped through my hand, and on the way down, it fellwith a clatter to the floor. “Elena?” I gasped, my voice filled with surprise. She remained silent, her hands clenching the wheel, her eyes flicking up to the rearview mirror. The car slowed, and my stomach dropped as I saw that she was looking out to the passenger side. Maybe fifteen, twenty men blocked the street. They lined up shoulder to shoulder, some with bats, some with glints of metal in their hands. My breath hitched, fear climbing into my throat.
"Hang on,” Elena said, her voice low and calm, though I could still hear the edge in it. She stepped on the engine hoping to zigzag past them, but they surged forward, blocking her path. With a loud crack, the sound of a gunshot, the car swerved as a bullet burst the front left tire. Then came another shot, and then the back tire, which hissed air as it emptied. The car came to a stop and my heart was pounding so hard I thought it was going to pop out of my chest. My fingers grazed the screen while I tried to message Collins: Help— My hands shook as I struggled to reach for my phone on the ground.
A hand came smashing through one of the windows, glass shattering it into shining smallparticles. I screamed as a man’s arm shot in and snatched my phone before I could hit send. “No!” I screamed, reaching for it, but the door was wrenched back, and hard fingers locked onto my arms and hauled me outside. The air was cold, sleek with the smell of pavement and sweat, and I flailed, the soles of my sneakers scraping against the earth. “Let go of me!”
Elena was scrambling out of the car, poised and deadly on impact. She punched the man holding me in the face, his nose cracking as he stumbled backward. “Amelia, stay behind me!” she shouted, turning around to fend off another assailant. I could see she was trained—every blow deliberate, positioned to protect my body against the mob. She elbowed one in the throat, doubled him over as he fell to the ground choking, and kicked the knee of another, his bone cracking. But there were too many. They swarmed all over her, with their bats lashing, fists flying, and I saw blood splatter her cheek after she received a punch there.
“Elena!” I yelled, my voice shattered by the wind. The man holding on to me gripped me even tighter, each one of his fingers sunk into my arm like claws. I wrenched, panic flooding my veins, and bit down on his hand, tasting salt. He yelped, lost his grip, and I scrambled away, tripping toward Elena. She fought as three men pinned her arms and struck her side with a bat. “Amelia, run!” she screamed at me in a hoarse voice, but I could not leave her behind.
I was running forward, my hands reaching out, when something hot and sharp burst across my back. The force knocked me down to the concrete sidewalk, my knees absorbing the impact. My stomach heaved and I vomited all over the dirt, staining it red, tasting bloody. The world spun, my vision blurred, but then there was another hit, this one harder, crushing my spine. I screamed the scream ripping from my throat, my body crumpling with the agony of it. My fingers went dry and my nails broke off as I scrambled, tried to crawl away to survive.
Through the chaos came the sound of Elena’s own voice, in a terrified shriek “Amelia!” bloodied was the last sight I had of her fighting off her attackers. The men were closing in, and then another blowlanded on my back. An impact that knocked the breath from my lungs. I heard Elena scream, her voicefilled with terror, and then everything went black.
