Chapter 111 Chapter 111
Chapter 111 Chapter 111
The gym had emptied out after the coach’s whistle, leaving the cavernous room filled with nothing but the hum of the fluorescent lights and the lingering, unnatural chill that always followed the white-haired entity. The One had retreated back to the middle rows of the wooden bleachers, sitting with one knee propped up, staring down at the empty polished floor as if visualizing the patterns of a world he intended to reshape.
The heavy double doors of the gymnasium creaked open again, casting a long sliver of hallway light across the court. Koda walked in, his backpack slung over one shoulder, his sneakers making a soft, hesitant squeak against the wood. He looked up at the bleachers, spotted the distinct flare of white hair, and took a slow, grounding breath before making his way up the steps.
The One didn't turn his head as Koda approached. He simply reached down, picked up a condensation-covered plastic water bottle from the bench beside him, and unscrewed the cap with a slow, deliberate twist.
Koda stopped a few feet away, his hands shoved into his uniform pockets. He looked at the entity who had spent ten years locked inside his own soul—the entity he had feared, hated, and ultimately let loose.
"You know, I really didn't expect that from you," Koda said, his voice quiet but steady in the empty gym.
The One took a slow sip of the water, the cool liquid dripping down his throat. He swallowed, capping the bottle with a sharp click before cutting his bottomless black eyes toward the werewolf.
"If you are here to kiss my ass for saving you, don't," The One coldly said, his voice carrying that familiar, sharp edge of ancient static. He leaned back against the bench, looking completely disinterested. "I don't like butt kissing. It’s a pathetic human trait, and it doesn't suit a wolf."
Koda rolled his eyes, a familiar spark of irritation flaring in his chest. "I wasn't here for that."
Without waiting for an invitation, Koda stepped forward and sat down on the metal bench right near him, leaving just enough space between them so their shoulders didn't brush. He unzipped the small front pocket of his backpack, reached inside, and pulled out a rectangular object wrapped in bright foil. He extended his hand, offering it to the entity.
The One didn't reach for it immediately. He tilted his head, his white fringe shifting as he looked at the shiny wrapper with a deep, suspicious glare. "What’s that?" he asked, looking at it strangely as if Koda were holding a piece of live ammunition.
Koda let out a heavy sigh, his shoulders slumping. He waved the wrapper slightly in the air. "Let's just say it's another type of cookie. But a healthy one."
"Cookie?"
The effect was instantaneous. The dark, detached coldness in The One’s eyes completely vanished, his pupils lightening as a look of pure, almost childlike curiosity took over his sharp features. The memory of Samantha’s fresh kitchen sweets from that morning was clearly still fresh in his ancient mind.
Before Koda could even blink, The One snatched the foil wrapper from his hand with lightning speed. He didn't bother looking for an opening tab; he simply tore the wrapper in half with his pale fingers, exposing the dense, brown, oats-and-whey block inside. He took a massive, confident bite, chewing aggressively.
For two seconds, there was silence. Then, The One’s face violently contorted into an expression of absolute horror.
Ptu!
He immediately spit the chewed mass right onto the bleacher steps, coughing violently as if he had just swallowed a mouthful of dry sand and cardboard. He threw the remaining half of the bar across the gym, watching it bounce uselessly off the hardwood court below.
"What is this trash?!" The One yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceiling rafters. He wiped his tongue with the back of his hand, his eyes flaring with a dangerous, volatile anger. He turned on Koda, his pale fist clenching tightly as thin, wispy trails of black smoke began to pour out from his hand, sizzling against the cold air. "You lied to me! You dared to feed me dirt and call it a sweet!"
"Alright, calm down now, brother," Koda uttered quickly, raising his hands in a defensive gesture. He didn't back away from the smoke, though his inner wolf pricked its ears at the sudden spike of demonic energy.
The word hung heavily in the freezing space between them.
The black smoke stopped pouring from The One's hand, curling into nothingness as the entity froze. He blinked once. Twice. The sheer, furious rage on his face slowly melted into a look of profound, stunned confusion.
"...Brother," The One called out, the word sounding strange and foreign as it rolled off his tongue. He looked at Koda as if the werewolf had just spoken to him in an ancient, forgotten language.
"Yes," Koda said, shifting slightly on the bench and letting his hands drop back to his lap. He gave a small, unbothered shrug. "Isn't that what you called me earlier down on the court? In front of Scott and the rest of the team?"
The One’s expression quickly hardened again, his pride instantly kicking back into gear. He snapped his head around, looking away toward the far exit doors of the gym, his jaw tightening. "Well... that's only because everyone in this pathetic institution thinks we are brothers. It was a matter of administrative convenience. Nothing more."
Koda watched the side of the entity's face. He saw the way the white hair covered his cheek, saw the tense line of his shoulders. For ten years, Koda had felt this entity's loneliness, his rage, and his grief trapped deep inside his own chest. He knew that beneath the toxic, possessive talk and the ancient malice, there was a creature that had been entirely erased from the world.
"We can be," Koda uttered softly.
He didn't wait around to see the reaction. Koda planted his hands on his knees, pushing himself up from the metal bleacher. He swung his backpack over his shoulder, turned around, and began walking down the steps toward the gym exit, his footsteps echoing in the quiet room.
The One remained completely still on the bench, his dark eyes tracking Koda's retreating form until the heavy double doors clicked shut, leaving him alone once more.
He sat in the silence for a long time, the cold air slowly warming up to the normal temperature of the school. Finally, his gaze drifted downward, landing on the half-eaten protein bar resting on the hardwood floor below. With a faint, almost imperceptible movement of his fingers, the bar lifted into the air, flying silently up the rows until it landed back in his pale palm.
"Hmm," The One sighed softly to himself.
He looked at the dense, artificial block, hesitated for a second, and then took another small, experimental bite. Instantly, his face squeezed up in disgust, his sharp features twisting as he forced himself to swallow the dry, healthy mass. It was absolutely terrible compared to Samantha's cookies, but as he chewed, a tiny, dark smirk returned to his lips.
By the time the final bell of the day rang, the sky outside had turned a bruised, cloudy purple, hinting at a late afternoon rainstorm. The hallways of the school were a chaotic mess of slamming lockers and shouting students desperate to start their weekend.
Harper walked quickly through the crowd, her eyes darting nervously around every corner. Ever since the encounter near the gymnasium, she had been on high alert. She kept her head down, her hand gripping the strap of her bag like a shield.
"Harper! Wait up!"
She turned to see Kai catching up to her, his face looking worn out and stressed. He fell into step beside her, his large frame shielding her from the crowded flow of the hallway.
"Have you seen Koda?" Kai asked, his voice low so the surrounding humans wouldn't hear. "He missed our post-practice meet-up. I've been looking all over for him."
"No, I haven't seen him since lunch," Harper replied, her brow furrowing with concern. "Why? Did something happen?"
"Scott and his guys were starting trouble in gym," Kai explained, shaking his head. "Koda almost lost it. But... the new guy stepped in."
Harper stopped dead in the middle of the hallway, a student bumping into her shoulder and muttering an apology. "The One? What did he do? Did he hurt someone?"
"No, that's the weird part," Kai said, his golden eyes filled with a deep, unsettling confusion. "He defended us. He called us his brothers in front of the whole varsity team. He completely shut Scott down without even throwing a punch. I don't get it, Harper. Last night he was ready to tear our throats out, and today he's playing the protective older sibling?"
Harper’s stomach twisted into a complicated knot. She remembered the intense, suffocating weight of his hands on her wrists from the night before, the way he had claimed her soul, and the terrifying game he had played in her bathroom this morning. He wasn't a protector; he was a predator establishing his boundary lines.
"He's not doing it to be nice, Kai," Harper said, her voice dropping into a sharp whisper as they started walking again. "He's letting everyone know that we belong to him. He doesn't want anyone else touching his property. Especially not a bunch of wolves high schoolers."
"Well, whatever his reason is, Koda went to find him after class," Kai muttered, looking worriedly toward the exit doors. "I just hope my brother doesn't do something stupid like try to make friends with a demon."
Outside, the first heavy drops of rain were beginning to hit the concrete, creating dark, coin-sized circles on the pavement. The wind had picked up, blowing the scent of wet earth and ozone through the open courtyard.
Harper and Kai walked out onto the main steps, where Catherine and Sarah were already waiting under the concrete awning.
"There you are!" Catherine cried, waving her phone in the air. "The bus is going to leave in two minutes, and the weather is getting entirely gross. Are you guys coming?"
"You guys go ahead," Harper said, offering her friends a reassuring smile. "Kai and I have to wait for Koda. Our dad is picking us up today."
"Alright, see you Monday!" Sarah called out as the two girls ran down the steps, holding their bags over their heads to shield themselves from the tightening downpour.
As the courtyard cleared out, leaving only a few stranded students waiting for rides, Harper stood under the awning, her arms crossed over her chest to fight off the sudden chill in the air. Except, she knew the chill wasn't coming from the rain.
A slow, familiar pressure began to build in the atmosphere, the sound of the falling rain seeming to dull into a distant, muffled hum.
"He's coming," Kai whispered, his werewolf senses picking up the shift before she could. His body tensed, his eyes tracking the edge of the school parking lot.
Through the gray curtain of rain, two figures emerged from the side of the gymnasium building. Koda was walking with his head down, his jacket wet from the storm. And walking right beside him, completely dry as if the raindrops were actively dodging his body, was The One. His white hair didn't have a single drop of water on it, and his dark blazer looked perfectly immaculate. He was holding a crumpled, torn foil wrapper in his pale hand, occasionally looking down at it with a deeply offended expression.
"Look at them," Kai muttered, his fists clenching at his sides. "It looks completely insane."
"Just stay calm," Harper murmured, her eyes locking onto the white-haired entity as he approached the steps.
The One stopped at the bottom of the stairs, looking up at Harper through his white fringe. The wicked, possessive smirk returned to his face the exact second his dark eyes met hers. He took a final, dramatic bite of the crushed protein bar, swallowed it with a visible grimace, and then tossed the empty foil wrapper into a nearby recycling bin with perfect accuracy.
"Your brother has atrocious taste in pastries, darling," The One said smoothly, his melodic voice cutting through the sound of the thunder rumbling overhead. He stepped under the awning, his freezing presence instantly pushing the humid summer air out of the space. He looked at Harper, his gaze trailing down her uniform before returning to her eyes. "But I suppose I can overlook it. Given the quality of the company."
Koda stood behind him, looking a little exhausted but strangely calm. He looked at Kai and gave a subtle nod, letting his brother know that he was alright.
"Let's just go," Kai said, his voice tight as he checked his phone. "Dad's car is idling by the front gates."
The One turned his head, looking toward the heavy black SUV parked near the exit. His eyes darkened into that bottomless, terrifying void for a brief second, a cold, predatory smile cutting across his sharp features.
"Yes," The One purred, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rasp that made the hair on Harper's neck stand straight up. "Let us go visit the Alpha. I believe we still have a family dynamic to settle."
