Chapter 161 Maya's Revelation

Chapter 161 Maya's Revelation

Maya found Lila in the gardens that afternoon. She sat on a stone bench, staring at nothing, her hands folded in her lap like she was afraid they might betray her again.

"Sydney told me about training." Maya sat beside her. "She said you took down nine warriors without breaking a sweat."

"My body did. I just watched it happen." Lila's voice was hollow. "Like I was a passenger in my own skin."

"Muscle memory is powerful. Especially for things learned young." Maya pulled a folded paper from her apron. "I found something. In the palace archives. I was not supposed to be looking but I thought maybe there would be records."

Lila's heart hammered. "What kind of records?"

"Registry of nobility their births, deaths and marriages." Maya unfolded the paper carefully. "I found your name, your real name before you became just another servant."

"Show me."

Maya handed over the paper. It was an official palace documentation with faded ink on yellowed parchment but the words were clear.

“Lady Lila Hartwell born to Lord Edmund Hartwell and Lady Catherine Hartwell of the Southern Province. Second daughter. Sister to Lady Celeste Hartwell, Crown Princess by marriage.“

Lila's vision blurred. "Crown Princess? Celeste was a princess?"

"Yes and that made you a lady of the highest rank, not quite royalty but close. Your family was wealthy and powerful. Connected to the throne through Celeste's marriage." Maya's voice was gentle. "You were not born a servant, Lila. You were born nobility."

"Then what happened? How did I end up here?" Lila's hands shook as she held the document. "How did I go from lady to servant?"

Maya pulled out another paper. This one more recent. "Your family disowned you. Four years ago. Right after Queen Celeste died. They accused you of murder. Said you pushed your own sister to her death out of jealousy. They stripped you of your title, your inheritance, everything. And they sent you here as punishment."

The words punched through Lila's chest like daggers. "They thought I killed Celeste."

"The whole kingdom thought you killed her. There was a trial. Witnesses claimed they saw you arguing with the Queen hours before her death. Someone said you threatened her. The evidence was enough to convict you in the court of public opinion even if the King would not allow an official execution." Maya's eyes filled with tears. "You were twenty three years old.“

Lila's world tilted. Memories tried to surface but could not break through completely.

"I did not kill her." The words came out fierce. "I loved Celeste. She was my sister. I would never hurt her."

"I know that. Anyone who knows you knows that." Maya squeezed her hand. "But someone wanted everyone to believe you did. Someone framed you made sure all the evidence pointed to you and when that was not enough, they took your memories so you could not defend yourself."

"Gerrit." Lila's voice turned cold. "Adrian and Marcus said they found journals. Proof that Gerrit killed Celeste and blamed me."

"Then he took everything from you twice. Once by murdering your sister and framing you, again by stealing your memories so you would never remember the truth." Maya's voice shook with anger. "He made you into nothing. Took a lady of nobility and turned her into a servant everyone could abuse. Made you forget you were ever anything more."

Lila stood abruptly. Her body moved with the grace Maya now understood came from years of noble training. Posture perfect. Movements refined. Everything about her screamed breeding and education even when her mind did not remember.

"The fighting techniques. The way I moved during training." Lila's voice was distant. "Ladies of noble houses receive combat training, for protection, for honor. It is part of our education."

"Yes, you would have been trained from childhood by the best instructors your family could afford." Maya stood too. "Your body never forgot even when your mind did. The training stayed in your muscles. In your bones. Waiting for the right trigger to surface."

Lila looked at her hands again. These hands that had been trained since childhood. That knew how to hold a sword, how to dance at formal balls, how to write with perfect penmanship. These were not servant hands. They never had been.

"I need to see Adrian." Lila's voice turned firm. "I need to know if he knew. If he knew I was nobility before. If he knew what my family did to me."

"Lila, maybe wait until you are calmer…"

"No! I have waited long enough. I have been patient and careful and afraid for months. But I am done waiting." Lila's eyes blazed. "I am Lady Lila Hartwell. Daughter of a noble house and someone took that from me. I want to know who. I want to know why and I want to know if the man who claims to love me knew the truth the whole time and said nothing."

She walked from the garden with purpose. Maya followed, worry clear on her face.

They found Adrian in his study, bent over maps with Marcus and Keal. All three men looked up as Lila entered without knocking.

"Lady Lila." Keal's voice held surprise. "We were just discussing…"

"Did you know?" Lila's question cut through the room like a blade. "Did you know I was nobility? That my family disowned me? That I was accused of murdering Celeste?"

Adrian's face went carefully blank. Marcus and Keal exchanged glances.

"Answer me." Lila's voice shook. "Did you know who I really was?"

Adrian stood slowly. "Yes, I knew."

The single word shattered something inside her. "You knew? This whole time? You knew I was not just a servant. You knew I had been Lady Lila Hartwell before. You knew my family destroyed me and you said nothing?"

"I had my reasons…"

"What reasons could possibly justify letting me believe I was nothing?" Lila's voice rose. "What reasons could make it acceptable to watch me be treated like dirt when you knew I had been nobility? When you knew I had been trained and educated and was not just some servant who wandered in off the street?"

Adrian's jaw clenched. "Because telling you would have put you in more danger. Because your memories were blocked for a reason. Because I was trying to protect you from truths you were not ready to handle."

"That was not your choice to make!" Lila's hands clenched into fists. "You do not get to decide what truths I can handle. You do not get to hide who I am from me just because you think it is safer. I deserved to know. I have always deserved to know."

"You are right." Adrian's voice was rough. "You are absolutely right. I should have told you the moment you started remembering. I should have given you back your identity instead of hiding it. But I was afraid. Afraid that knowing would break you. Afraid that remembering would put you in danger. Afraid of losing you again."

"You never had me to lose." Lila's voice was cold now. "Because you never gave me the choice to be with you. You just decided. For both of us. Like you always do."

She turned and walked from the study. Behind her, Adrian made a sound like a wounded animal. But she did not look back.

In the corridor, Maya caught up. "Lila, where are you going?"

"I do not know, anywhere but here!" Lila's voice cracked. "I need time to process and figure out who I am when I am not just reacting to what everyone else tells me."

"Then take the time you need but Lila?" Maya's voice was urgent. "Be careful. Whoever took your memories, whoever framed you for murder, they are still out there and now that you are remembering, you become a threat to them."

"Good!" Lila's eyes blazed. "Let me be a threat. Let them come for me because now I know how to fight back and I am done being a victim."

She walked away, leaving Maya staring after her with worry and pride warring on her face.

Because Lady Lila Hartwell had finally woken up and she is furious.
