Fifty Six
Fifty Six
Clarissa's POV
The place was beginning to get boring for me. There seemed to be nothing to keep me busy, and in addition to that, the men seemed to get tired of me already. Most of them had already left to probably do something else, which left me alone in the place.
I looked around, trying to figure out if there was any way for me to get out of here. It was unlikely, but I would be a fool not to check it out. Even if there was a small chance, I was going to take it just in case it worked out.
I started going around the place, looking for any signs of weakness. I tapped the walls to see if there was anything I could use. I could already feel the hopelessness settling in on me. It was very unlikely that I would get out of here in this manner. Even now, there was no progress.
"Give it up," I heard a voice. I turned to look at one of the men who had put me here in the first place.
"What?" I asked him.
"I said you should give it up," he responded with a smile on his face. "There's no way for you to escape, and even if you did, you will be brought back here in an instant. There's no way you can earn your freedom through that means. You have to follow through with whatever we have for you."
"Shut up," I said. "I decide that for myself."
He looked visibly shocked by what I had told him, and I could feel myself almost smiling. I kept it down as much as I could, however, because I did not want him to know how much pleasure I derived from pushing him. He obviously wasn't going to do anything. Or was he?
"How dare you," he asked, moving closer to me. I could feel some heat coming from him as he closed the distance between us swiftly. I did not take a step back or show any sign of fear.
"Now what did I do wrong?" I asked him with a sweet smile on my face. "All I did was tell you what I wanted. Is that a bad thing?"
"You disrespected me and gave me a command you have no right to do so," he said.
"And what are you going to do about it, exactly?" I asked him, with a sweet smile on my face. "There is nothing you can do now, is there?"
I could see him getting even more angry as his hands started to shake in a kind of rage. If he could not control himself, he was surely going to hit me with them. I could almost feel the pain already, but something told me that he was not going to try it. There was an order to stop him from doing that, and I was banking on that.
"Fine," he said, taking a step back. He started off, leaving me in the passage.
Seeing that the person who had come to disturb me was gone, I continued what I was doing. The ceiling was very high, and if not for that, I might have tried to climb up on it. I looked to see if there was any sort of window for me to go through, and I saw that there was none, except one that was very high up.
I considered the chances of me climbing up it and escaping through it. For one thing, it was a bit too small, and another was that I would simply fall down once I got to the top, and there was no way I could actually manage a safe landing from that kind of height.
"No," I decided. "That can't work."
I spent the next 30 minutes trying to find a way out of the place. It was futile, of course, but there was nothing else for me to do, so I did not really mind. After all, it was the best way for me to spend my time, given the condition that I was in. If I did any other thing in this situation, it would simply be a waste of time.
"Unless I actually decide to sleep," I thought to myself, considering it seriously. Since this was a kind of strange holiday for me, I might as well take full advantage of it.
I made up my mind that I would spend the next 30 minutes, or more, as much as I could judge without a watch, looking out for any way to escape. And if I couldn't, I would just give up and rest. A nice nap wouldn't be that bad.
As it happened, I could not actually find anything, so I went back into the room and went over to the bare ground. The whole place was dark, which was going to make it very difficult for me to sleep because I loved it when it was bright. But it was my best option. I did not fancy myself sleeping out in the passage just because it was very strange and I had never done it before. Staying in a dark room was much better.
Sleeping on the ground was something that I had almost never done in my life. It was a shame. I could hardly believe that it was happening to me at that point. They are all going to pay for it, I thought to myself as I settled down on the cold floor, feeling the hardness of it against my skin.
"I'm never going to sleep," I thought to myself. "Never. It simply can't happen with this situation."
I closed my eyes and tried to fight off the tears that were coming up because of my situation. This was what I was now reduced to. I'm not going to let it affect me. Not let it break me. And I won't definitely let it show on my face, I decided, making up my mind and steeling my resolve.
I opened my eyes to see that the door was open and some light was shining on me. I blinked, trying to get used to the sudden change in the lighting of the environment. Seeing that I was uncomfortable, the person who was shining the light upon me pointed it elsewhere, giving me the perfect opportunity that I needed to look upon him.
I could not recall ever seeing him before. It was as if each time somebody came to visit me, it was someone new, as if they wanted me to keep on seeing new faces and stuff like that.
"What do you want from me?" I asked him, feeling a little annoyed that he had gone to disturb me. It had been very hard for me to sleep in the first place, and I did not want to come out of that state until it was absolutely necessary.
"Get up," he said. "They are going to take you away from here."
"Are you serious?" I asked.
"What is the problem?" he asked. "Are you not tired of staying here in this dark room? You are supposed to be happy."
I considered what he said for a moment, and indeed, it was correct. I was supposed to be happy about the change in my environment. But about the fact that I was still in a cage with them, there was actually no way that I could ever be happy.
"Let me guess. You're going to take me to somewhere worse than here?" I asked him, making up my mind that I was not going to leave here unless he actually made me. It was most likely going to happen, but I wasn't giving up without a fight.
"You can never know," he said. "Who knows? It may just be better. Now get up, and let's go."
"I want you to carry me away," I declared, looking up at him.
"What the hell?" he asked. "Get up now, or I'm going to make you."
"The same thing," I said. "Isn't that exactly what I just said I wanted?"
"You said it as if you wanted it to be a ride," he responded to me. "Anyway, I'm going to get you out of here now. That's enough."
I waited for him to come and get me, but he stood there on the spot. I could tell that he was also waiting for me to get up and comply with his instructions. Well, he was going to wait forever then.
"Damn it," he said, standing up. He went over to me and took me by my arm. Just as I thought that I was about to be hoisted up into the air, I felt myself being dragged against the tiles as he started to lug me away, as if I was some kind of bag.
Despite not actually liking the feeling, I let it happen. It was not the best form of ride, but it was okay. When I managed to balance myself on the floor and let him drag me in the most comfortable position.
"You are such a child," he said.
"Why exactly are you taking me away?" I asked him, deciding to have a meaningful conversation while I still had the chance.
"Well, the boss wants to see you," he said.
"Who is that?" I asked. "Can you give me a name?"
"His eyes met mine, flashing in a dangerous glint. "Carl Trevor," he said.
