Chapter nineteen

CLARISSA DEVOR —

My eyes flutter open and it took me a moment or two to get my bearings. I glaced around the room.

It was a small room and was rather white all over. I never did white.

The smell of drugs hit me and I realized I was in the hospital.

Then everything came back to me.

Memories of Karl and his maniac smile as he slammed me against the shredded glass of the car till I was half dead assaulted me.

“Fuck him...” I thought, also realizing that I was supposed to be dead.

We were in a deserted street and no one was supposed to find me until after a long while.

Enough time for Karl to scramble and clear every trace of his involvement in it.

I had to do something.

I couldn't just watch as he stepped all over me like that.

I sat up in a hurry.

Fresh pain assaulted my head and traveled all the way to my brain.

“Fuck,” I muttered falling back to the bed.

The damage was worse that I thought.

I managed to crane my neck at my body and saw that I was in a pair of fresh clothes and my wounds had been cleaned and I was bandaged all over.

Drips were connected to my hand and attached to a machine beside me.

I lifted my hand slowly and brought it to my head. Who knew how bad it was over there?

“... I'm going to kill whoever the fuck did this,”

My ears pricked up as I caught some voices behind the door.

Damien's voice.

Which meant that he was here.

Why did I feel relieved?

“...how is she doctor?” I overheard him say.

The doctor said something and their voice became muffled.

“... she's not allowed to receive any visitor yet, she is barely even awake...”

My ears picked up bits and pieces of their conversation and I vaguely heard Damien tell the doctor to fuck off as the door was pushed open.

I immediately closed my eyes and pretended to be unconscious.

“Who the fuck did this Clarissa,” Damien walked over to where I was, his voice laced with anger.

He sounded so angry that I thought he wanted to kill someone.

Well, I wanted to kill Karl too but that was the difference.

He was mine to kill.

He made a mistake in not making sure I was dead and now I was going to teach him now to do his job properly.

Damien brushed his hand against my forehead.

My eyes snapped open, surprised at the sudden contact, at how soft his touch was.

“I'm sorry Clarissa,” he muttered holding my hand.

“I should have seen it coming,”

Then his eyes darted to mine and he seemed to notice for the first time they I was awake.

“You're alive... Thank goodness!”

I squinted in a small smile.

It might have been my semi conscious and dizzy state but I was starting to find the man in front of me that was currently getting all flustered over me distinctly charming.

“Hello stranger,” I muttered, grinning despite myself.

“Fuck this isn't a joke Clarissa,” he glared at me, sitting on the seat opposite me.

He appeared to be more angry at himself than at me... Hmm, intriguing.

“What happened?” he asked, his eyes searching mine for answers.

I frowned. It was hurting my head just to try and search for the information among the myraid of thoughts that were floating in my head.

“I was angry... Very angry,” I muttered.

“We thought that someone was following us so we were trying to lose them but then we were cornered in an abandoned street. ” I said, recounting the events of that day.

“I lost a lot of blood... I should have died.” I said again, this time, searching his face for answers.

“I put a tracker on you,” he admitted. “The truth is that I barely know you and so I keep tabs on you all the time. ”

My eyes widened at the sudden confession.

“I knew that something was wrong and luckily it wasn't too late when I found you. ”

“Luckily,” I repeated, feeling a bit light headed.

“How long was I out?” I asked suddenly.

“Two days,” Damien replied. “You made me scared. ”

“Sorry?” I chuckled, finding it amusing.

“It's not funny Clarissa. I'm going to make whoever did this wish that they had never made the journey to earth in the first place. I want names. ” he growled, his expression changing.

“I can take care of it myself,” I replied my expression close off.

“Oh yeah?” he raised an eyebrow. “In this state? Highly logical. You're my wife Clarissa and they messed with you. Don't think that I'm going to let them go off the hook. ”

“Your wife?” I scoffed.

“Well you obviously wasn't thinking of me in that way when you had Morgana's lips all around yours. ”

I tried to keep the hurt out of my voice but I still sounded bloody well annoyed.

Who did he think was to play both sides and still expect me to me cool with him?

A warning look flashed across his eyes.

I stared at him defiant.

It was a clash of wills now.

The anger faded out of his eyes and his shoulders sagged in defeat.

“Why do you keep her in the game Damien?” I asked, my voice softening.

“I'm starting to wonder which of you is still caught up on the other one. ”

“It's obvious that she is a manipulative bitch and she has a remarkable talent tir getting on my nerves. ” I continued, not bothering make her sound the slightest bit like a good person.

She was every bit the devil and if he was going to remain blind to her ways, then I would gladly be there at every step of the way to remind him of the devil's true nature.

“You said you agreed with the marriage arrangement so that you could get rid of her didn't you?” I asked him.

I would have folded my hands across my chest and given him attitude and one of my best glares, but being confined to a bed with the pain threatening to explode in your brain didn't give you that kind of luxury.

So I opted for a look of indifference while trying to ignore the dangerous tick in my head.

“Yes, ” Damien replied. “There's nothing between us anymore I swear. ”

“Then lose her,” I whispered, my voice coated with a hint of challenge.

“Don't tell me that the almighty CEO Damien can't get rid of a clingy bitch because that would be really pathetic no matter how you chose to look at it. ”

“Don't push me Clairissa,” he growled “I'm a warning voice. And fucking believe me when I tell you that she's gone for good. ”

I bit back a comment.

I had a good mind to remind him that he said that the last time, and I nearly believed him, right before I caught her in his office again kissing each other.

Damien's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched in frustration. "You don't understand, Clarissa. Morgana is not as simple as she looks.“ he said, looking anywhere else but my direction.

”She has something on me, something that could ruin my reputation and everything I've worked for. I can't just get rid of her without dealing with the consequences."

I raised an eyebrow. Was this another of his lies? Did he really expect me to think that Morgana would have man as powerful as him wrapped around her little finger?

"What could she possibly have on you, Damien?“ I demanded with raised eyebrows.

”You're a powerful man. What could she have that would make you so vulnerable?"

Damien's eyes flashed with anger, but then he sighed and shook his head. "It's not important, Clarissa. What's important is that I take care of whoever did this to you. You're my wife and I won't just take this lying down."

"Your wife?“ I snorted, rolling my eyes.

”You mean the woman you married to get rid of Morgana? The woman you barely know and keep tabs on like a prisoner?"

Damien's face darkened, his eyes glinting with anger. "That's enough, Clarissa. You don't know the whole story, and you don't know what I'm capable of. Just know that I will protect you, no matter what it takes."

I laughed. My new hobby seemed to be pushing Damien to his limits. "Protect me? You mean like you protected me from Karl? Like you protected me from Morgana and her threats?"

Damien frowned, his face twisted in rage, and for a moment, I thought he would strike me. But then, he seemed to regain control, his expression smoothing out into a cold, hard mask.

“It's Karl isn't it?” he asked.

I didn't reply.

He stood up and shoved his hands into his pockets. "I'll take care of it, Clarissa. You just focus on getting better." He said heading for the door.

Who did he think he was??
