Chapter 44

Chapter – The Return of the Alpha

The silence that had settled over the main hall of the castle was dense, almost suffocating. The torches flickered, casting restless shadows on the stone walls, while dozens of eyes fixed on the figure advancing among them with steady steps, though his body still bore the marks of war and the death he had defied.

Kilian.
Their Alpha.
Their king.

For a moment, no one breathed. The leaders of the allied packs, gathered for this extraordinary council, were frozen in their seats. They had heard rumors, whispers of an impossible miracle, but none had expected to see it with their own eyes. Disbelief turned into awe, and awe into a wave of fervor that shook the hall.

One of the elder counselors let the wooden staff he held fall; the sharp thud echoed against the stone tiles. Another, unable to stay standing, dropped to his knees, tears overflowing from his eyes. As if seized by the same impulse, warriors and nobles, courtiers and servants—all bowed their heads, pounding a fist against their chests in a gesture of respect and submission.

A murmur spread, growing until it became a roar of voices and howls that shook the stone walls.

—Kilian! Kilian! Our Alpha!

The court, which hours before had been consumed by rumors of succession, now trembled before the return of the wolf that the Moon itself seemed to have restored from the abyss. Some leaders knelt with sincere fervor, others with fear disguised as devotion; but all knew the same truth: with him standing, nothing would ever be the same.

Victor watched from a shadowed corner, his heart pounding violently in his chest. He had bet everything on the Alpha’s death: his plans to rise in rank, to manipulate the court, to weaken the pack, had all been built on Kilian’s absence. Now, seeing him alive, crowned by everyone’s obedience, a cold sweat ran down his neck.

“This can’t be happening…” he thought, gritting his teeth. “He should be dead. Darkness had claimed him. No one returns from there.”

But he was wrong. And worst of all, the crowd did not doubt: they recognized him, they accepted him. The bond between Alpha and pack vibrated in the air with renewed strength. Victor realized that as long as Kilian breathed, any conspiracy of his would be nothing more than a ridiculous shadow.

—Your reign ends before it begins… —he muttered under his breath, rage burning beneath his skin.

Kilian stopped in the center of the hall. His mere presence imposed reverent silence, despite the prior clamor. His eyes swept over his own, and in them there was no arrogance, only a mixture of exhaustion, pain, and determination. Ian, his Beta, and Gabriel, his Gamma, flanked him discreetly. They had already shared the emotion of reunion hours before, when they greeted him at the castle entrance. Now they stood firm, supporting their Alpha in front of everyone present.

—Sons of the Moon —he said in a grave voice that resonated like thunder across the walls—. I have returned, not because death denied me, but because the pack called me back. Because my Luna needed me.

The murmurs faded. Even the air seemed to listen.

—I know my absence brought doubt, fear, and darkness —he continued—. But today I reclaim what should never have been in dispute: our destiny. The Empire will not fall while I defend it.

A roar of howls rose, vibrant, shaking the hall. Wolves in both human and animal form responded with the same devotion. The pack’s energy surged, strengthening the bond with their Alpha, rekindling lost trust.

Ian slightly inclined his head, proud, while Gabriel smiled with the serene expression of one who knows the hardest battle has already been won: restoring everyone’s faith. Kilian, for the first time in a long while, allowed himself to feel the emotion. He had come home.

The following days were a whirlwind of change. News of the Alpha’s return spread faster than the wind: allied packs sent emissaries, human towns under his rule resumed work with renewed vigor, and cities, once on the brink of anarchy, regained the pulse of stability.

The court, so prone to intrigue, aligned under his authority. Nobles who had previously carved up territories like vultures stepped back, aware that a single look from the Alpha was enough to silence them. The Moon Council convened once more, this time with the discipline that only a true leader could enforce.

Even the markets flourished. Merchants who had kept their goods hidden for fear of looting returned to the streets. The city bells announced not just the return of a king, but the rebirth of an empire.

The troops, previously scattered, trained again under the strict discipline of commanders loyal to Kilian. Young wolves, inspired by his example, trained with renewed fervor, eager to prove themselves worthy of an Alpha who had defied death.

Victor, however, burned with impotence. From the window of his chambers, he watched as the training yards filled with howls and drills, as the court devoted itself in obedience to a man he had presumed dead.

—Damn it… —he spat, slamming his hand on the wooden table.

He had lost his chance. Kilian’s shadow was too vast. The Alpha had not only returned: he had been reborn stronger, more revered, as if destiny itself had chosen to reinforce his legend.

Still, Victor was not one to surrender easily. If he could not seize power in life, he would seek to weaken it in secret. An Alpha could be feared… but he could also be betrayed.

—Enjoy your glory, Kilian —he murmured, venom in his voice—. It won’t last forever.

\---

In the audience hall, Kilian finally sat on the throne, not as a man claiming power, but as a leader returning to duty. The entire court watched him expectantly.

—There will be justice for the traitors —he announced, his gaze sweeping over every face—. And rewards for those who resisted with loyalty.

A murmur of approval ran through the hall. No one dared to doubt his words.

Ian, standing by his side, inclined his head.

—Brother, the people believe again. You have returned what we thought lost.

Gabriel crossed his arms and added:

—And may the Moon protect those who still dare to conspire.

Kilian did not respond, but his eyes sought a corner where he knew Victor was watching. He said nothing, made no gesture, but the warning was clear: he had seen him. He had felt him.

The tension in the air was palpable, though the crowd did not notice. Only Victor understood the message.

\---

The moons passed, and the empire began to breathe again. Fields were repopulated, villages reinforced their defenses, and the elders of the packs whispered that the times of darkness were behind them.

But Kilian did not deceive himself. He knew peace was fragile, that the shadow of betrayal always lingered, and that external enemies would soon hear of the Empire’s rebirth and test its borders.

Yet now he had what he had lacked before: the renewed bond with his Luna, the unwavering support of his pack, and the strength of an Alpha who had returned from death.

The Empire rose again, stone upon stone, howl upon howl. And as the wolves celebrated under the silver light, everyone knew that a new chapter had begun.

The chapter of the immortal Alpha.
