Chapter 61 The ultimate revelation
Chapter 61 The ultimate revelation
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
Dear readers,
Thank you so much for supporting this book thus far. I have enjoyed the journey. I just wanted to update you on the future plans. Right now, I'm done with this month's update. I will take a small break to update my other books before coming back to this. I can't wait to start the second half of Hades' and Daphne's journey.
Daphne
After I’m released, I pack up my bag to leave the hospital. I say goodbye to all the doctors and hospitals. Till today, I still don’t know my name. The police had not been any help. Apparently, no one in this world is missing me. Not a single missing persons report anywhere.
I try not to think about it, even though it weighs heavily on my mind. I keep wondering where I’d go. When I looked in my bag earlier, I saw some cash. It’s enough for me to pay for a motel room while I figure out what’s going on with me.
Outside, I stand on the curb hoping to hail a cab. Instead, within seconds, a smooth BMW pulls up. Michael rolls down the windows.
“Hey, I thought that was you. I was just on my way out. Do you want me to give you a ride?” he asks.
“No, that’s okay. I’ll catch a cab.”
“Oh, come on, I don’t mind. Hop in, I’ll drop you off! Where are you going?”
I look up and down the road. No cabs in sight. I’m not sure how long it would take to find a new cab. So, I decide to hop into Michael’s car. It’s clean, smooth, the expensive leather cushions my behind. I can’t remember the last time I’d been inside such luxurious car.
Michael drives with the windows down. The wind surges past, blowing my hair around.
“So, where are you headed?” Michael asks.
I think about it for a second but nothing comes to mind. “I don’t know. I really don’t know.”
Michael glances at me worriedly. “You still don’t remember a thing, right?”
“Nothing from my former life.”
I wanted to ask him what he meant when he tried to get me to forget my past earlier.
“Oh man, I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse. Personally, I would give anything to erase my past but I can see why you would eager to find out the truth about yourself. Hey, maybe I can help. You said you have nowhere to live, right? Maybe I can help. I promise I’m not a stalker or a serial killer. I have a house in Hollywood. I have access to the best detectives. Maybe they can help you find out the truth about yourself. You could spend a few days in my house; it’s no trouble at all.”
“Really? Do you go around picking up amnesiac patients?” I ask him.
He smiles at me. “Nah, only the really special ones.”
He pauses, the wind blows past us. “I made a promise to someone. A close brother. I’m trying to keep that promise,” he says. Once again, he’s being rather ominous.
“Sometimes, I have no idea what the fuck you are saying!”
Michael grips the steering hard. “Thank the gods for that. Trust me, you don’t want to figure it out either.”
We drove on the open road for a few more minutes. I liked the wind blowing in my face. When we reached his house, I am stunned at how magnificent it is. The house is situated inside an estate, on acres of land that spread as far as the eyes can see.
“Welcome to my home. Come on in,” Micheal says, parking the car near the water fountain. The house is empty and eerily quiet. The foyer is bigger than anything I’d ever been in. Michael’s professionally-shot posters line the walls.
“Are you some sort of model?” I ask.
“You could say that.”
“So, you are famous or something?”
He bobs his head. “In some parts of the world, I guess yes.”
I take tentative steps around the house because I’m still suspicious of him. Why did I even agree to end up here with him? It sounds like a dateline episode waiting to happen.
“Let me show you to your room,” he says. We walk up the stairs to my room. It’s big and dainty, painted pink and white. The canopy bed in the room draws my attention, giving me déjà vu.
“Is everything okay?”
“I swear I’ve been here before.”
“No, you haven’t, that’s silly,” Michael laughs.
I look around, studying the room. It looks like something I would’ve visited in the past but so far, I have no recollection of Michael.
“Anyway, thanks for giving me the room. You didn’t have to.”
“I’ll leave you alone to rest now. You can come find me downstairs for lunch or something later.”
I put away my clothes, take my bath, and prepare for lunch. When I’m ready, I exit the room and walk down the long hallway. Something catches my attention.
One of the pictures on the walls. A man stares back at me. The man in my dreams. An overwhelming sense of familiarity washes over me. This time, I am extremely sure I’d met the man in the picture before my accident.
“Hey, Daph, where are you?” I hear Michael’s voice call out as he comes running down the hallway for me.
Daph? Daphne? That name unlocks some memories inside me. My ears perk up as I remember all the times I had heard that name.
“Hey, there you are. Lunch is ready,” Michael says.
I turn to him slowly. “What did you just call me?”
“Excuse me?”
“What did you just call me?”
Michael brushes his ears. “Nothing, I was just looking for you.”
“You called me Daph. Daphne? Is that my name? Do you know who I am? Tell me the truth!” I yell at him. I am growing frustrated.
“Do you even know how difficult it is for me right now? I am in a stranger’s house and that guy!” I point to the picture on the wall. “Looks familiar. I swear I’ve met him before! Who are you? Who is he? Why am I here?” I ask.
Michael sighs. “I promised him I would shield you from the truth.”
“What truth? Promised who?”
He glances toward the man on the wall. “My brother, Hades. He gave up himself for you. He made the ultimate sacrifice so you could live.”
