Chapter 49
David
I wanted to break through the gates of that warehouse at high speed, break down the doors, and destroy everything in front of me. But I knew it would minimize my chances of getting Sarah out of there.
My fears started to leak and I wasn’t managing to keep control, maybe I wasn’t strong enough.
But I was on the way, running through the streets with Benjamin by my side in the car. The guy Sarah had chosen to stay in my place, to supply what I should be supplying when she decided to run away from me.
The phone call from her number made me have a sudden urge for revenge, the sweet, weak voice on the other side of mine took the remainder of the control I was maintaining to be able to reason while driving like crazy.
He had started and I had no idea how far he would go to try to get revenge on me for her body, so I would kill him. Mike wasn’t man enough to stand next to any woman, any human being. I left the etiquette aside when my life began to be about Sarah and because of her I provoked him, I gave triggers for the monster he had inside him to leave.
It was entirely my fault.
I stopped the car at the corner of the shed, with the insistence of Benjamin to surprise him with silence. Mike didn’t seem like the kind of guy who had total control of the situation, didn’t seem to care about anything other than what he wanted to do.
You let the only person who knew about your hiding out go, which worried me like never before. He wouldn’t just hurt her, Mike was too angry to stop if he started.
"Here you go..." Ben whispered pushing part of the window, he didn’t have enough room for the two to get through, but he could get in without all the noise I intended to make breaking through the gates with the car.
"Come in, I’ll hold it right here." He threw himself through the opening and pushed the glass so I could get in right away.
The warehouse was nothing more than a warehouse of old medical supplies, stretchers, and appliances in terrible condition. If he was smart, he’d make Sarah’s life a living hell with what was available here.
"Son of a bitch." Ben muttered to my attention. "He was here all along."
There were packages and some old blankets thrown in the corner next to several broken machines, the rotten smell indicated that he was here since I broke each of his fingers.
Mike had been smart, working at the hospital should have given him knowledge of that space and it would be stupid not to use it when Benjamin and I were on to him. Yeah, I knew that. My bad habit of watching Sarah brought more information than I wanted, like watching her go willingly to Ben’s room. Follow the laughter she gave next to him while drinking in front of the TV. I hated that happiness, hated to see how far she was from me and when I decided to intervene to remind her that we had something she would never find in Ben, I received a notification of movement inside the house, Mike had invaded and spent hours watching them sleep.
I was looking across the street and watching what he would do through the images of my phone, it was not easy to hold the will to enter and wrap my hands around this kid’s neck. But Sarah would hate me if I did like she wanted to hate it when I had to come in to tell her.
Then she showed me that I was not the only one who kept all those feelings, Sarah gave herself to me without me having to force her as I did at her mother’s house.
That’s when I had to follow her closely, I couldn’t let Mike get to her before I did. I just didn’t think he’d go that far.
"Shit." Chiei stumbled upon several surgical tools scattered on the floor, the noise echoed through the empty shed.
"He’s not here." That I had already noticed.
I walked a little further inside and the shed seemed to have an entrance from the back and that’s when I felt despair take over my body, Mike would go to the end.
I took an iron rod that should have been once a support for medicines and dragged it before reaching the door, Benjamin removed one of the wooden latches that kept the door closed and squeezed it between his fingers.
The adrenaline caused my wound to stop hurting.
I pushed the door slowly, there was a weak lamp on a surgical table. There was blood splattered on the floor and spread across the table and part of the floor. The sighs made me look the other way, Mike was over Sarah’s unconscious body looking ready to go to the end with all that evil.
I, unlike Benjamin who remained static looking at that damn scene, dragged the rod across the wet concrete floor. The squeaking sound made that damn kid’s eyes turn in my direction, there was no other option.
If he was armed like our last date, one of us would die today. And I didn’t care who he was.
"David!" Benjamin shouted as Mike looked in the direction of the operating table.
I looked in the same direction seeing an equipment supporter and on top of her, the gun.
I kept advancing faster and faster seeing in Mike’s eyes the doubt, running to the gun or facing myself before I sank his head against the ground. He ran to the gun leaving Sarah’s body uncovered and practically naked on top of dirty hospital blankets, if I ever thought about the possibility of letting it live, it would disappear at the very moment I saw my girl under it without really knowing what was going on.
"Son of a bitch!" I threw the rod and she narrowly missed, however, all I wanted was to get Sarah out of there.
"Not even dead can you stay! What the fuck!" Michael shouted holding the gun in my direction again. "Don’t you tire? How many times am I going to have to shoot you until you stop fucking with me?"
"Mike..." Benjamin dropped the wood he was holding while looking at Sarah. "You lost track? You’re shit!"
"Tell me something I haven’t heard from you yet." Mike laughed mockingly as I took small steps towards Sarah. "I’m tired of being the second choice for everything, our parents, college, work... even for a fucking relationship!"
"Michael... put that gun down." Ben glanced at me understanding what I was doing. "You need to learn to deal with disappointment, shit, it’s not the first time you do something stupid!"
"Hey, professor... you can stop there, she’s mine and I won’t lose this time."
I stopped turning to face him, Michael had his face smeared with blood and I refused to look at Sarah’s body before making sure that the blood wasn’t hers. He smiled looking at me at the brother on the other side and sighed.
