Chapter Fifty Six

***STROUD POV*****

As I stood at the edge of the pit, a sense of what I had experienced before washed over me. The sound of rushing air, the faint scent of damp earth, and the inevitable cry of alarm all blended in a haunting familiarity. “Ahhhhhhhh” echoed through the air.

My men, seasoned veterans of the palace guard, instinctively sprang into action. But I knew it was too late. The prince, that impulsive, headstrong young man, had already taken the fateful step. He vanished into the depths of the pit, leaving behind only the faintest whisper of his presence.

I grunted in frustration, a low, rumbling growl that spoke volumes of my disappointment. I had warned him, time and again, of the dangers that lurked within these ancient walls. But he would not listen, stubbornly refusing to heed my counsel. It was a trait he shared with his father, the king – a trait that would one day be his undoing.

As his guard, I had watched the prince grow from a wide-eyed infant into a strong-willed young man. His mother, the late queen, had entrusted him to the king's care, and I had been tasked with protecting him from the shadows. Over the years, I had grown to admire the prince's spirit, even as I despaired of his impulsiveness.

The king's decision to accept the pregnant queen-to-be had been a testament to his enduring love for her. Despite the whispers of scandal and the potential repercussions, he had chosen to stand by her, to claim the unborn child as his own. And so, the prince had been born, the product of a love that had transcended societal expectations.

But the truth, hidden behind the palace walls, was far more complex. The king, despite his many years of marriage, had remained childless. His inability to produce an heir had been a source of great concern, a threat to the very future of the kingdom. And so, when the queen had arrived, already carrying the child of another man, the king had seen an opportunity.

With great calculation, he had decided to claim the child as his own, to present him to the world as the rightful heir to the throne. The queen, grateful for his acceptance and love, had agreed to keep the true parentage of the child a secret. And so, the prince had grown up, unaware of the truth about his birth, with the king as his father figure.

Outside the palace, no one suspected that the prince was not the king's biological son. The royal family's secrets were well-guarded, and the king's decision to adopt the child had been carefully concealed. The prince's upbringing had been that of a future king, with all the privileges and responsibilities that came with it. He had been trained in the art of warfare, diplomacy, and statecraft, preparing him for the day when he would ascend to the throne.

But the weight of this secret hung heavy in the air, a constant reminder of the complexities and intrigues that lay at the heart of the royal court. The king's love for the queen and his adopted son had been genuine, but it had also been a calculated move, designed to secure the future of the kingdom.

The prince's entire life had been a masterfully crafted illusion. He had grown up believing the king was his biological father, and the late Queen Lycans was his mother. The king had been a devoted and loving father figure to him, showering him with attention and affection. The prince had never doubted the king's paternity and their bond had been strong and unbreakable.

But fate had other plans. After years of grieving the loss of Queen Lycans, the king finally succumbed to the pressures of producing an heir. He had taken a new queen, a young and ambitious woman determined to bear him a child. She had tried every conceivable remedy, every ancient potion and ritual, to conceive. And finally, after years of trying, she had given birth to a handsome young boy.

The prince's little brother was now nine years old, a bundle of energy and curiosity. The prince adored him, spending every spare moment with him, playing, laughing, and exploring the castle together. Their bond was unbreakable, forged in the fires of brotherly love and loyalty.

As the prince watched his little brother grow and thrive, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and responsibility. He had taken on a mentorship role, teaching his brother the ways of the castle, the secrets of the kingdom, and the values of their family. Together, they were inseparable, a dynamic duo that brought joy and laughter to the castle.

Unbeknownst to the young prince, the arrival of his newborn brother had ignited a whirlwind of events that would irrevocably alter the trajectory of their lives. The kingdom buzzed with fervent whispers and insidious rumors, each fevered speculation unraveling the mystique surrounding the prince's true lineage. The citizens, peering from the shadows of their quaint villages and grand castles, formed conspiratorial circles, questioning the king’s intentions and the secrets he harbored.

As the prince basked in the adoration of the realm, he could feel the tide of public opinion shifting beneath his feet. Little did he suspect that his father, the king, had woven a web of deception around him, one that was about to ensnare him in a dangerous plot. In a shocking twist of fate, the king had dispatched the prince under the guise of a noble mission, tasking him with a covert assignment. The real purpose, however, was a harrowing betrayal — a calculated maneuver designed to eliminate him from the equation and secure the throne for his brother.

As he stood on the precipice of this new reality, the prince’s life was poised to be turned completely upside down, the very foundation of his existence shaking beneath the heavy weight of treachery and doubt. The air crackled with tension as he prepared to navigate a perilous journey, unaware that not only his future but also the fate of the kingdom hung in the balance.
