Chapter 74
Chapter 74
The evening sea breeze swept in, leaving a salty, damp feeling on the skin.
Alexander squinted slightly at Scarlett's question.
His conversation with Scarlett had started as a spur-of-the-moment excuse. He wasn't about to let Scarlett dress like this in front of other men.
Possessiveness kicked in, and the reasons came easily to him.
Now he had to seriously think about it.
Fortunately, as the head of the Black Group, Alexander was always good at conversations.
His gaze lazily fell on Scarlett as he spoke, "I wanted to talk to you about Sebastian."
Again, Sebastian.
Scarlett felt she was about to develop a psychological aversion to that name. She couldn't understand why Alexander was so interested in other people's relationships now.
She frowned and refused, "Thanks for your concern, Mr. King. I'll handle things between Sebastian and me."
Alexander acted as if he hadn't heard, "When I said he wasn't busy at work, I was worried he might be deceiving you. I didn't mean to mock you."
Scarlett sighed softly and looked away.
Alexander, seemingly unsatisfied, continued to stir the pot, "In a relationship, the one who loves more is always the loser, Ms. Collins. I know how painful it can be, and I don't want you to go through that."
He didn't name names, but every word was clearly an accusation against her.
The so-called "loving more," the so-called "pain." Weren't these feelings he had learned from her?
"Did Mr. King skip socializing just to give me this pep talk?" Scarlett's lips curled into a lazy smile, "Unlike you, Mr. King, I genuinely like Sebastian. No matter how he hurts me, I'm willing to endure it. I don't care."
She had had enough of Alexander's mockery.
Since he had already said he would let go, and he had someone else by his side, why did he still come to her with these words?
Scarlett's expression was unpleasant, and Alexander, watching her, didn't miss these changes.
Scarlett was growing impatient.
Ruining Scarlett's facade was indeed a satisfying experience for Alexander, but he also remembered not to push her too far.
After a brief surprise, Alexander lowered his eyes slightly, "I just..."
His words cut off.
Alexander's expression was hidden in the shadows as he said, "I'm sorry."
His retreat did nothing to improve Scarlett's mood, the complex emotions in her chest burning hotter.
Why should Alexander apologize?
She would rather he remained high and mighty than see him constantly making concessions, reminding her that she was just Alexander's past.
He treated her kindly because of this past relationship, and now he had to bow to her anger.
Yet, her anger had no solid foundation.
Scarlett felt as if she were punching cotton, her emotions nearly collapsing, and her body trembling uncontrollably, "Mr. King, there's no need to apologize to me... Achoo..."
The wind was too strong, and she was dressed lightly, unable to hold back a cough.
Scarlett raised her hand to hug her arms, and soon, a suit jacket was draped over her.
It was Alexander.
He was bowing his head, concentrating on adjusting her collar.
This scene was so familiar that all of Scarlett's emotions dissipated in an instant, leaving only deep sadness.
How had it come to this?
They hadn't even betrayed the relationship.
Scarlett almost shed tears.
She bit her lower lip and remained silent.
After adjusting her jacket, Alexander hesitated before pulling his hand away. "I'll head downstairs."
If he stayed any longer, he wouldn't be able to resist holding Scarlett tightly, merging her into his bones and blood.
If there were another choice, he wouldn't force his beloved into such a situation, but he had to know what secret Scarlett was hiding.
The sound of his footsteps grew distant.
Under the moonlight, tears slid down Scarlett's cheeks, falling onto the railing and mingling with the sound of his footsteps, slowly fading away.
Alexander had just reached the third floor when he saw Jessica waiting for him.
She had already changed into her swimsuit, and her eyes lit up at the sight of him. "Alexander, where did you go? I've been waiting for you."
She quickly walked over and hugged Alexander's arm, her soft chest pressing against his arm, gently swaying, an overt invitation of desire.
Unfortunately, Alexander wasn't interested.
His expression remained cold, and he discreetly withdrew his arm, dusting off his shirt sleeve as if repulsed by Jessica's touch. "Ms. Green, there's no one else here. We don't need to keep up appearances."
Jessica's smile faltered slightly. "Alexander, I came with you, isn't that what Jay wanted? How is this an act..."
Alexander glanced at her and smiled indifferently. "You don't need to bring up my father in everything. If you really intend to use him to pressure me, you're making a big mistake."
She almost bit her lip until it bled.
Jessica looked at Alexander with eyes full of resentment.
She admired this man so much, giving up a lot and traveling all the way to Phoenix City. Unfortunately, her sacrifices weren't enough to move him.
Alexander's handsome profile was like a blade, cutting tiny wounds in her heart. She was in pain but unwilling to give up.
Jessica maintained a faint smile. "Alexander, I just like you."
That's why she had begged Jay Black, hoping to stand by his side.
Alexander's expression remained unchanged. "Ms. Green, is it worth it?"
His words didn't hurt Jessica, but they left her feeling helpless.
She twisted the hem of her clothes, her gaze fixed on Alexander, her thoughts racing, suddenly realizing something was amiss.
Where was Alexander's jacket?
Why would he come down without his jacket? Was there someone else upstairs?
Jessica abruptly raised her head. "Alexander, where's your jacket?"
"It doesn't concern you."
He suddenly realized he couldn't let Jessica wait here, or she would definitely discover Scarlett wearing his jacket.
With this thought, Alexander's expression softened slightly. "Mike called, there's an issue at the company. I need to leave now. Do you need a ride back?"
Jessica was somewhat flattered.
She quickly decided. "Yes, I'll go change now."
Alexander nodded.
While Jessica went to change, he leaned against the wall, momentarily lost in thought.
His gaze almost uncontrollably drifted upward.
Scarlett hadn't appeared, and he breathed a slight sigh of relief.
Then he almost wanted to laugh.
He had always been upset about Scarlett and Sebastian, and at his lowest, he had thought about vengefully retaliating against her.
But suddenly, the situation reversed. Now that Scarlett was sad, he couldn't bear to see his beloved shed a single tear.
So, how had Scarlett felt when she mentioned Sebastian in front of him?
