Chapter 72 Chapter Seventy-Two

Chapter 72 Chapter Seventy-Two
I nod my head. "Yes, she seems pretty exhausted. Thank you for letting her rest here." I say, not exactly sure why she asked.

"You don't have to thank me. I will always try to help her the best I can, even if that means just giving her a place to lay down and rest." Samina says, sounding like there is something else she wants to say. She glances towards the living room, where Leilani is laying down and I can't take it anymore. I have to know what is going through her mind.

"Was there something else on your mind?" I ask, hoping she will just tell me.

Samina sighs. "Am I that obvious?" She asks, giving me a small smile.

I laugh softly. "I can tell there is something bothering you. I just didn't want to be nosy."

Samina smiles. "You have every right to be nosy. That is part of your job as the pack Beta. You have to know what is going on at all times." She pauses. "It's just Leilani." She says, going back to whispering, like she is afraid of waking her up.

"What about her?" I ask in a whisper, my face turning serious.

"Well, as you know it is extremely dangerous to be a Legacy Wolf, even with the weakest of gifts." She whispers.

I nod my head, urging her to go on. "Yes, I know." I say, already knowing where this is headed.

"Leilani seems to be pretty powerful. She hasn't even fully developed her gifts and she is already pulling energy from other wolves and now she is healing other wolves. From what I have read and heard from my mother that is not normal. Not for her age. Things seem to be progressing more quickly than they should. We don't know what else she is capable of." Samina says, sounding genuinely concerned.

"You aren't saying she is a threat to the pack, are you? You know she would never intentionally hurt anyone. What she did to Micklin was an accident, Samina. You know that." I say defensively. I don't want to hear anyone talk bad about her in any way.

Samina waves her hands in surrender. "No, no, no, that's not what I'm saying at all, Malakai. I know she would never hurt anyone. I am more concerned for her safety, not for the safety of others."

Her safety? Why would she be concerned for her safety? Leilani is more than capable of taking care of herself. Plus, she has me. I will always protect her from anyone and everyone.

\-Leilani's POV-

I know I shouldn't be eavesdropping. I should tell them, I'm not asleep anymore. It's pretty obvious they didn't want me to hear this conversation, but I want to know what they have to say. As the Alpha of this pack, I need to know what is going on. So, I just lay here, pretending to sleep, as I listen to their whispered conversation.

"Why are you concerned about her safety? I will protect her. She is strong and capable, if I am not around, she can protect herself." Malakai says, sounding a little irritated.

"I'm just worried when other packs find out she is a Legacy Wolf she will be in danger. Especially if they find out she can heal other wolves, that is a desirable quality. I don't want her to end up like her mother." Samina says. My heart hurts a little at the thought of my mother. I miss my mom so much and I can't see Samina's face, but she sounds sad. Everyone loved my mom. She was a loved Luna. I hope I am half as loved by the pack as she was.

Malakai is quiet for a long time, then he finally says. "I know. I don't want anything bad to happen to her. The only way members from other packs would know about her is if one of our own pack members leak the information. Do you think there is anyone in the pack that would potentially betray her trust like that?" Malakai asks.

If there is someone that would betray me like that, it would be one of the council members. They are not happy that I am the alpha. Maybe because I am a woman, maybe because I am young, or maybe just because they don't think I will ever be as good as my father. No matter what their reasoning may be there is a lot of council members that I do not trust. If it were up to me, I would get rid of the council or at least the members that don't want me to be the Alpha and start fresh.

Samina sighs. "I don't like to speak ill of any member of our pack, but I just have a very bad feeling about some council members. There have been whispers, rumors that might just be rumors, but I don't want to take any chances." She whispers.

There are rumors about me. What kind of rumors? I know everyone was talking about what I did to Micklin, but I haven't heard anything else. Are they saying bad things about me? Should I be concerned? Several questions race through my mind as I wait for them to continue talking.

"I haven't heard anything." Malakai says. "What is being said? If anyone is planning on hurting her, they will be dealt with accordingly."

Samina is quiet for a minute, like she is thinking of how she wants to word her answer. "There isn't anyone planning on attacking her directly, I just heard some of the members say they hope other packs discover we have a Legacy Wolf as an Alpha, that way they can take care of the problem without having to get blood on their own hands." She says, sounding very hesitant. "Like I said they are just rumors. I don't know if anyone is planning to spread the word to other packs. That was just the little bit I have heard." She rambles, speaking very quickly.

She knows just as well as I do how protective Malakai is of me. Even the thought of someone trying to hurt me could send him into a murderous rage. Malakai growls, a deep, threatening growl. "No one and I do mean no one will hurt Leilani. Not only will leaking information about her gifts put her in danger, but it will put every single member of our pack in danger. That is an unacceptable betrayal and anyone that participates in the betrayal will be banished and or publicly executed. I will inform every single council and pack member myself if I have to. I do not care if they respect Leilani as an Alpha or not. She is the Alpha and anyone that doesn't like it is free to leave." He says, using his authoritative tone.

This isn't going to be good. I know I can handle myself. I can protect myself. I can protect my pack, but I do not want my pack to be in danger because of my gifts. I also do not want Malakai threatening all of our pack members.
