Chapter 44
Chapter 44
Cade's face instantly turned deathly pale.
He knew.
That person had both hands broken and was now lying at home barely alive.
James looked at Cade with a half-smile, his voice lazy, as if talking about something trivial, "I've always been clear about grudges and favors. I know who's right and who's wrong, so I only took that person's hands, and it's treatable. As for you..."
He didn't finish his sentence, but it was enough to send chills through Cade's entire body.
Cade's body trembled uncontrollably, fear spreading through his heart.
Just a pair of hands?
Coming from James's mouth, it sounded as casual as asking for two dollars.
But then Cade had another thought.
He also got his head smashed by me, so James probably won't retaliate too severely.
His head was still throbbing with pain!
"James, what happened last night was my fault for being blind and offending your wife, but she also struck hard, not only breaking my head but almost making me unable to be a man."
The more Cade spoke, the more justified he felt, and he even straightened his back a bit.
"They say harmony brings wealth. How about we both take a step back? My family will compensate your wife for emotional distress. How's that?"
He thought his proposal was already giving James plenty of face.
Before James could speak, Dash had already slapped him across the face!
"You bastard! What nonsense are you talking about!"
Dash looked at James in panic, forcing out an awkward smile, "James, James, please don't hold it against a kid. He's never been bright since childhood, he..."
Under James's increasingly cold gaze, Dash awkwardly stopped talking.
James raised an eyebrow, his thin lips curling into a cold smile, "You think my wife needs your pocket change?"
With those words, Dash understood everything.
James wasn't going to let Cade off.
"People who make mistakes need to face the consequences. Call the police."
James's last words were directed at his assistant.
When Cade heard they were calling the police, he panicked immediately.
He crawled on his knees to James, pleading, "James, please don't! I admit I was wrong, but your wife also broke my head. She really wanted me dead!"
James kicked him to the ground, his eyes dark and cold, "She was protecting herself. Even if she beat you into a vegetable, you'd have to take it. Understand?"
His red-soled leather shoe expressionlessly ground hard against the back of Cade's hand.
Cade screamed in agony, his whole body convulsing.
James calmly ground it again and again, as if he were just casually wiping the sole of his shoe.
Dash's face went white with fear. He crawled to James and grabbed his pant leg, pleading, "James, James, please show mercy and spare my son! I'm willing to give you all our family's money! Just please let him go!"
James acted as if he hadn't heard, not even sparing half a glance, and turned to leave in disgust.
"James! James!"
Dash's face was ashen as he knelt on the ground shouting.
Jesse Turner calmly adjusted his glasses, "Save your energy. After something like this, do you think your family's company can survive?"
Dash and Cade slumped dejectedly on the ground.
With one look from Jesse, several bodyguards immediately dragged the two out and dumped them on the street.
I, sleeping soundly, didn't know that after James rushed back to the hospital and learned I wasn't crying or making a fuss but was especially quiet, he wanted to kill Cade!
In his view, I was the most timid person. After such a terrible incident, I had no reaction at all, which was very unusual.
It must be because Cade had scared me.
But he didn't know that I was calm simply because I guessed James would handle everything for me.
In the afternoon, I woke up to the sound of arguing.
The hospital room door was violently pushed open.
When I saw that face clearly, my whole body tensed up, alarm bells ringing in my heart.
Before I could react, Cade stumbled in and knelt by my bedside.
"Please! Please spare our family! I was too stupid, too blind to recognize you! I deserve to die! I'm a bastard, I'm not human!"
As Cade spoke, he viciously slapped himself.
One after another, and within a few hits, his face was swollen.
I stared blankly at everything happening before me, unable to process it.
The person who had been so arrogant in front of me last night was now kneeling before me in tears, begging for forgiveness.
He looked as pathetic as a drowning dog right now.
Cade's slaps continued, as if he would keep going until I agreed.
I hesitated for a moment, then shook my head, "You shouldn't have come to me."
He did look pitiful now.
But I was a thousand times more pitiful than him last night.
So much so that I'm still lying in the hospital.
I didn't want to be the good guy.
Does being drunk mean you can do whatever you want?
I'm not his family member, why should I indulge him like this?
"Nurse, please call security!"
I turned my head to look at the young nurse standing by the door.
"Please, spare my family! I don't want to go to jail, don't want my family to go bankrupt! Please! I'll do anything you ask!"
Cade gritted his teeth and kowtowed repeatedly on the ground.
The nurses gathered outside all looked frightened.
Anger rose in my heart, and I frowned in displeasure.
"You don't want to go to jail, but did you think about what I, a weak woman, went through? If James hadn't come back in time last night, then I..."
Just thinking about last night's despair made my voice tremble uncontrollably.
I closed my mouth, not wanting to continue this unpleasant topic with him.
Security arrived and dragged Cade away.
"No!"
Cade screamed miserably, his hands desperately clutching the door frame, refusing to leave.
"If you want to die, then stay."
A cold, suffocating voice rang out. Cade's whole body shuddered, and he instinctively let go.
James strode in and looked down at him, "Seems the lesson I gave you wasn't enough. You still dare to cause trouble at the hospital."
Cade's face turned deathly pale.
"James, please spare us, please James!"
Cade desperately broke free from the bodyguards and crawled on his knees to James's feet, begging humbly.
I didn't want to watch this scene, so I simply pulled the blanket over my face.
How ridiculous!
The person who was so high and mighty in front of me last night was now more pathetic than a dog!
The terrible, frightening images from last night surged through my mind. Despair and helplessness swallowed me like endless waves, as if I would drown in them.
The sounds of James teaching someone a lesson gradually became blurred in my ears, as if separated by a layer of water.
I don't know how long passed, but the blanket seemed to be tugged.
I immediately became like a frightened bird, clutching the blanket tightly and refusing to let go.
But the other person was clearly stronger and forcefully pulled the blanket away.
I looked up with teary eyes and happened to meet James's gloomy face.
My heart jumped, and I frantically wiped the tears from my face.
"You're scared?"
James raised an eyebrow, his voice cold, "This kind of thing, just put on an act and be done with it. Are you getting addicted to pretending?"
I pressed my lips tightly together and didn't answer.
I was scared, scared to the point of going crazy!
I didn't dare think about what I would have experienced if James hadn't come back in time last night and I had been alone the whole time.
