Chapter 191 My Brother My Mate
Chapter 191 My Brother My Mate
Maureen's POV
I walked into the garden behind the citadel with a smile on my face. It was dark outside but the moon was so bright. It would have been mistaken for early morning if not for the dark clouds and the bright shining stars.
I discovered the garden three days after I got to the citadel. It was almost as beautiful as the garden in my dreams. I had made inquiries about who had been taking care of the garden. An elderly woman about the age of Grandma Gina had been brought to me. She did a wonderful job taking care of the garden.
As I walked in the garden, touching one delicate flower after another, I couldn't help but reminisce on the events of the past week and the event of that day in particular.
I had finally reinstalled the president to his rightful place. It had been a big occasion with wolves from every part of the kingdom there to witness the occasion. I was not one hundred percent sure of all the elders in the council, but I was sure I had over ninety-five percent of their trust.
'I guess you know that; it is not going to be an easy journey all the way, right?' A voice said from behind me and I turned around to see the woman I had seen the first time I had the strangest dream of my life. She was looking the same with the glow of light surrounding her.
Her beautiful smile was contagious because I smiled back without holding back. She was so beautiful that it was almost unbelievable. I didn't have to ask her who she was, I knew who she was.
'I thought you abandoned me,' I said, smiling at her. 'The compass no longer works. I thought it was a sign that you have deserted me.
'You are not deserted, Maureen. The compass has served its purpose. Now you must follow your instincts and rule appropriately,' she said, coming to stand beside me.
'Lance said the same thing. Did you whisper it into his ears when I wasn't looking?' I asked.
'No. But Lance is a continuation of you Maureen. He embodies the rest that couldn't be deposited in you to avoid overburdening you.'
'I don't understand,' I said frowning.
'Walk with me, Maureen,' she said, moving forward. I had no option but to walk with her.
'You and Lance are like a puzzle. The only way to solve it is to put you together. That is why Lance can't be killed except you are killed and vice versa,' she said turning to me.
'Like we complete each other?' I asked.
'Exactly. You should listen to him as well. He has divine knowledge, a rare one that he hasn't discovered yet.'
'That was how he got to know about the compass,' I said. It was not a question, it was a confirmation.
'Take care of my people Maureen. Be just. You were not chosen randomly. Painstakingly I picked you. Lance is here. We will talk some other time. Come here alone whenever you need me,' she said smiling and then disappeared.
I smiled happily as I kept staring at the spot she had been. I suddenly felt peace from inside of me that was indescribable.
'Can I be let into the joke that is making you smile into space like that?' Lance asked walking towards me.
'I wasn't smiling because of a joke. I wasn't alone,' I said, smiling as Lance came to stand on the spot the moon goddess just vacated.
'I didn't see anyone when I got here,' Lance said looking around as if he was looking for the person.
'She sensed you before you got here, so she left,' I said, folding my hands on my chest to mimic him.
'And by she you mean who?' Lance asked raising a brow.
'The moon goddess. She was just where you are standing. She came to wish me well I answered.
'Come here,' Lance said, pulling me into his arms. I felt pleased resting my head on his chest. I did that a lot when I thought he was my brother and it never failed in soothing me.
'You know how much I loved cuddling up with you when you were still my brother?' I asked.
'What am I now? I am still your brother, Maureen,' I said.
'You are my mate,' I said firmly.
'No, I am still your brother,' Lance said stubbornly and I lifted my head from his chest to look into his face.
'Why are you saying you are my brother?' I asked frowning at him.
'I am your mate because the moon goddess deemed it so. But I am also your brother because we are in this together and always,' Lance explained smiling.
'You are my brother and you are also my mate; I get it,' I said smiling.
'Will it be wrong for me to kiss the golden wolf under this
bright and beautiful moon?' Lance asked teasingly.
'The golden wolf will enjoy kissing her brother under this beautiful moon,' I said, smiling at him.
'Your hair is so beautiful, and under this moon, it is like a waterfall of gold jewels,' Lance said as he dipped his hand into my hair and massaged my scalp gently. He knew how much I loved that.
'Are you trying to flatter me?' I asked, raising a brow, then moaned as his hand moved to the base of my neck.
'To what end would I flatter you?' Lance asked before kissing my hair.
'To get a hot alone time with me,' I said as his lips descended on mine.
'I don't have to sweet talk you into that, Your Majesty. We both know that all I have to do is blink and you are mine,' Lance said against my lips.
'That is so...' I couldn't finish the sentence as his lips captured mine in a mind-blowing and toe-curling kiss. The kiss was a battle for dominance and I was enjoying every second of it until somebody cleared their throat behind us.
Lance reluctantly removed the lips from mine. I was embarrassed to see Mum standing there smiling at us.
She and Dad had arrived alongside the Alpha and Luna earlier for the President's installation ceremony.
They had a new Gamma who was overseeing things so they both could attend. The former Gamma was found guilty of a felony while his wife and daughter were exiled from High Moon.
'Do you both know it is still kind of difficult for me to see you both together like this? Mum asked walking towards us.
'I thought you would be used to it by now,' Lance said.
'I don't know why but I am not. I am just used to seeing you as brother and sister, then the fact that you are mates is taking time to sink,' she said.
'We still are a brother and sister. It's just that the fact that we are mates overrides that part of our relationship,' Lance said grinning.
'I don't understand a word of what you just said and I am not going to probe. You both should come inside. We are ready to eat,' Mum said and left.
I hit Lance lightly on the chest and said, 'You confused Mum just now.'
'Yeah. I didn't mean to. I was just explaining how I see our bond,' Lance said pulling me into his arms again and sighing loudly.
'You heard mum, we should go inside,' I said, but I didn't make any attempt to remove my head from his chest.
'I know. I just need a minute with you like this, under this beautiful moon,' Lance said.
'We can come back here after everyone is asleep.'
'Is that a promise?' Lance asked.
'Yes,' I answered quietly. Lance let go of me and took my hand as we walked inside.
It was a chaos inside. Everyone connected to the golden wolf was there: family, friends, relatives. It was a beautiful sight to behold.
I caught sight of Ian who was having Leila in his lap. I rolled my eyes mentally at that. Ian was worse than an Alpha wolf with his possessiveness of Leila. He rarely allowed Leila out of his sight except it was highly necessary. Leila wasn't complaining, though; she seemed to be enjoying the attention.
I had felt bad for Ian at first when he told me he lost his ability to be invisible as the side effect of being stabbed with the bane. But I was elated when I discovered that he got another in its place. Ian could hear people's thoughts. Unlike Shanty's ability to hear people's thoughts, Ian didn't have to make eye contact. All he had to do was listen.
We got no explanation for the reason for his switch of ability, but the leader of the waiters had concluded that Shanty might have lost her gift to Ian in the process of stabbing him.
'We have an announcement to make,' Dominus said, making me halt my roaming thoughts. He was having one of the twins in his arms.
Lucia blushed as Dominus said that, and I gasped in surprise. It couldn't be what I was thinking, right?
'Our pup is on the way,' Dominus said, and everyone started giving their reactions to the news.
Lucia's mom and aunt were there with us. They had come to visit and stayed for the president's installment ceremony. Lucia's mom was the first to get to her and hugged her with happy tears in her eyes.
'This scene is sending a message, you know,' Lance said into the mind link after we had settled down and Dominus was holding Lucia happily.
'What message?' I asked.
'That could be us. What do you think about having little Maureen or little Lance?' Lance asked.
'There is no big deal. We can try,' I said into the mind link, then shrugged at him as I turned to him.
I rested my head on his shoulder as we watched everyone talking and making plans for Dawn and Lucia's pups.
It had been a tough, risky ride, and I couldn't say we were unscathed, but we lost and we gained. And being together like that in happiness and fulfillment that had no rival.
I won, we won. Destiny is fulfilled!
