Chapter 188 They are Here
Chapter 188 They are Here
Maureen's POV
'Asher you need to let the doctors examine her,' I said for the umpteenth time as the doctor tried to get to Dawn to no avail.
We were at the council hospital. After so much shouting and noise, we got the Luna and Dawn to the clinic on time.
The Luna was taken into the labor room while Dawn was placed in a ward, and a doctor was immediately allocated to her, but Asher wouldn't let the doctor access her.
'You need to let go of her Asher. You might be choking her as it is,' Lance said, making Asher let go of Dawn instantly.
I had thought that we might have to bring Lucia in to make him sleep so that the doctor could attend to Dawn without his interference.
When Asher lifted his face to us, I saw that his wolf was in control because his eyes were completely those of his wolf.
'Mate will be okay right?' Asher asked looking at me pitifully.
'Yes. Your mate will be fine, but you need to step away from her,' I said, looking at him in the eyes.
He eventually agreed to step back, and we sighed in relief. Dominus had insisted on staying in the corridor with his dad to wait for news on the Luna, and Lucia had stayed with him. Rocha and Torrence came with me and Lance. Ian had not followed us back to the citadel, and I had not bothered to check on him because I thought he might need some time to himself, but his mate Leila was with Dominus and Lucia waiting for news about the Luna.
The doctor touched Dawn's hand lightly but she moaned as if she was in pain. This reaction prompted Asher to growl at the poor doctor. The doctor jumped in fright but when he saw that Asher wasn't going to attack him, he continued his job.
The nurse who came with him was looking pale. I guess she was scared witless but she had to maintain composure because of her profession.
The doctor took blood samples, and Dawn moaned again, eliciting more growls from Asher.
'I will let the blood test results do the talking, but from the way her mate is acting, I can make a guess on what is wrong with her, but I will advise that we wait for the results,' the doctor said when he was done.
'Thank you doctor,' I said shaking hands with the doctor.
'Are you sure she is not in any danger?' Asher asked with his eyes glued to Dawn.
'No. She is not in any danger. I will advise you to let her sleep, and you too should lie down beside her so that you can calm down,' the doctor said to Asher before leaving with the nurse in tow.
'Asher, I think you should take the doctor's advice and lie beside Dawn,' Lance said to Asher.
Asher didn't say no. He immediately got into the bed and scooped Dawn into his chest. Dawn snuggled closer to him and anyone could have thought she was pretending to be asleep.
When we were sure they would be okay, we left them and went back to the others where they were waiting for news on the Luna.
I knew that the Alpha had gone into the labor room with the Luna so I knew he wouldn't be on the corridor.
'Any news?' I asked Dominus. He was pacing up and down with his hands folded on his chest. He looked so worried that I went to him and hugged him. He hugged me back and I felt the nervous shutters in his arms.
'She will be fine Maureen,' Dominus said convincingly and I smiled.
'Are you saying that to yourself or me?' I asked smiling at him teasingly.
'You, of course. I don't want you getting worried,' Dominus said.
'Really? I think you are actually telling that to yourself. I am not nervous big brother. I know she will be fine,' I said winking playfully at him.
'Are you calling me scared right now?' Dominus asked frowning lightly.
'Are you guys going for each other's throat at a time like this? Lucia looked from me to Dominus.
'I should have known they were siblings from the get-go,' Lance said under his breath but he knew we would hear him.
'Indeed. We were all blind to their bickerings; we know better now anyway,' Lucia said, giving us both her wicked saccharine smile.
'I think your hair truly gives electric shocks,' Dominus said to me and I frowned at him wondering how he found that out.
'How did you know that ?' I asked frowning.
'When you hugged me, the tip touched my bare hand and I felt it,' Dominus answered.
'I think I am privileged then,' Lance said smiling.
'Privileged to be the only one who can touch her hair?' Lucia asked raising a brow.
'Yes,' Lance answered.
'Then you should feel privileged to be the only one who can brush her hair. You won't be able to get help in that department,' Lucia said smiling teasingly at Lance.
'My hair doesn't need brushing. I haven't brushed it in weeks and it has been okay. No tangles. And it seems I am the only one that can get it wet,' I said shrugging.
'Wow. That is wonderful,' Leila said.
We all fell into silence as we patiently waited in the corridor. Seconds soon stretched into minutes and minutes into an hour.
The doctor who had attended to Dawn approached us, saying that her test results were out. I told him to lead us back to Dawn's hospital room so that he could tell us what he wanted to.
Lance was the only one who followed the doctor and me to Dawn's room. The others stayed back to wait for the good news.
Asher raised his head the minute we entered the room and growled at the doctor since he was in the front. I rolled my eyes at his action. Asher had to calm down.
'Your Majesties, Mr. Asher, the results are out and I can happily tell you that your mate is pregnant,' the doctor said smiling.
'What?' Dawn said opening her eyes to stare in surprise at the doctor.
'You were awake?' Asher asked frowning at her.
'Yes. I didn't want you to move away if you knew I was awake. I was enjoying the warmth,' Dawn said, shrugging.
'What you are saying now, doctor, is that it was the pregnancy that made her unconscious?' Asher asked turning back to the doctor.
'Not really but I will say she should stay away from strenuous activities for now. I guess the babies might be stronger than the normal pups,' the doctor explained.
'Now I am done for. You shouldn't have told him that I don't need stress, doctor. Now you have turned him into a babysitter and me, into his baby,' Dawn groaned loudly.
Lance and I started laughing out loud at the confused expression on the doctor's face. He probably didn't understand a word of what Dawn had said.
The door to the room suddenly opened, and Rocha ran in, smiling from ear to ear.
'They are here,' he said dancing happily.
'Who?' Dawn asked. Since she passed out, she didn't know what was happening to the Luna.
'The babies. They are here. The Luna has finally popped them out,' he said again, raising his voice in genuine happiness.
We all rushed out of the room to get to the corridor. Asher helped Dawn up and carried her in his hands despite her protest as we all went to the corridor.
The Alpha took turns hugging everyone. He was happy. He deserved it. He was a fierce lover and a faithful mate. He deserved every happiness that a good person should have.
'I never thought she would have them here at the citadel,' the Alpha said when it was my turn to hug him.
'They are special and their birth should be. Congratulations, Dad,' I said and hugged him. He hugged me back with his eyes filled with tears.
I hugged him tight. A man who accepted me when he should have done his best to get rid of me to save his face, he deserved the title 'dad', and I never intended to stop seeing him as one.
We were all allowed to go in to see the Luna and the lovely twin boys. Dominus wouldn't stop bragging about the fact that he won the bet. I was too happy to banter words with him so I let it all slide.
I suddenly realized at a point during our jubilation and excitement that Leila, Ian's mate was missing. I mind-linked Lance that I was going after her so that I wouldn't interrupt the happy mood by voicing my worry out loud.
It was easy for me to leave without anyone noticing. They were busy admiring the babies.
I followed Leila's scent to the back of the clinic. She was sitting in the grass and playing with the blades. It was either she picked the habit of sitting in the grass from Ian after they met or she was like that herself.
From her posture, I could see that she was unhappy. I walked towards her and stood there beside her without saying anything.
'Do you think he can ever love me as much as he loves her? She asked me.
'By the 'he,' you mean Ian, and by 'her,' you mean Shanty, right?' I asked.
'Yes,' she said simply.
'You are his mate Leila. He loves you, he just needs time to sort through his emotions,' I said looking up at the stars in the sky.
'Watching the happiness that radiated from the Alpha, I realized that my mate might never be that dedicated to me,' Leila said sadly.
'You can't say that Leila. Ian might not seem dedicated to you right now, but he loves you; I am sure of that,' I said, looking down at her rigid back.
'You don't understand,' Leila said.
'Make me understand,' I said, frowning.
'Ian only marked me because he wanted to help me get rid of my rogue stench. He couldn't bring himself to mate with me,' Leila said to my utmost shock.
'What?' I asked. I was shocked beyond words.
'That was what he said. He said he didn't know how to bring himself to mate with me because his mind was somewhere else,' Leila said unhappily
How did I miss the signs? Was I too overwhelmed with the fact that they were together that I didn't see what was underneath? I needed to talk to Ian!
