Flatline

Flatline
Ashlyn

Marco and I sat silently at the edge of our bed, our hands tightly clasped, yet our hearts weighed down by an invisible burden neither of us could immediately name. The entire house was eerily quiet, as if the walls themselves were holding their breath, mirroring the storm of emotions surging within us. The dim glow of the bedside lamp painted shadows across the room, just enough to reflect the deep worry in my husband’s eyes.

“I still can’t believe what she said,” I whispered, my voice trembling as I fought the tears that were stubbornly welling in my eyes. “I should be relieved that she’s alive… that she survived. But why does it feel like I’m hurting even more now?”

Marco gently rubbed the back of my hand, his touch soft and reassuring, but I could feel the tension in his muscles too, as if he was holding back so much just to stay strong for me.

“She said all those things, knowing full well that you’re my wife,” he said calmly, yet each word was sharp, firm. “There was no remorse in her eyes, Sweet. No hesitation. No acknowledgment of right or wrong. She meant every word.”

I nodded, but it only made the knot in my chest tighter. “I thought… after everything she did to us, she would finally wake up. I hoped, maybe she’d realize how wrong all of it was. But no, Marco. She didn’t. She never will.”

I looked down as tears began to fall freely, tears that felt endless. “It hurts. Because no matter how much pain she’s caused, she’s still my twin. My sister. And no matter what, she’ll always be a part of my life. But why is it so hard to understand the choices she’s making?”

Marco sighed and wrapped an arm around me, pulling me gently against him.

“Because she chooses not to change,” he murmured. “And that’s not your fault, Sweet. You’ve tried, God knows how hard you’ve tried. You’ve forgiven her again and again. You’ve loved her in ways she doesn’t even know how to return. But her choices are her own. They are not yours to carry.”

I clung to him, my arms tightening around his waist, drawing comfort from his embrace. In his warmth, I finally felt myself breathe. But still, the ache inside me wouldn’t go away.

“Marco…” I whispered, burying my face into his chest, my voice barely audible. “What if she doesn’t stop? What if she keeps trying to be with you… even now?”

He pulled away just enough to cup my face, guiding my gaze to meet his own. His eyes held no trace of doubt, only fierce, unwavering love.

“Listen to me, Sweet,” he said, his voice low and sincere. “I choose you. I have always chosen you. No matter what she says, no matter how she plays with emotions or tries to rewrite the past, I will never leave your side.”

His words sent a jolt through me. There was a raw truth in them that broke through my fear. But still, I couldn’t shake the guilt.

“But Marco… she’s my sister. And even if I can’t accept the things she’s done, I can’t ignore the pain she’s carrying. She’s in the hospital, she may never walk again, and the only thing she’s asking for... is you.”

He fell silent. The cold air from the AC brushed against our skin, deepening the stillness between us. And then, after a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice steady and resolute.

“But I don’t belong to her, Ashlyn. I never did. You are my life. And even if she says she needs me to live, I won’t destroy what we have for a lie she keeps telling herself.”

That broke me.

Not in pain but in overwhelming gratitude.

I broke down, sobbing against his chest, not because I was broken, but because for the first time, I truly understood what it meant to be chosen… and to be loved in full.

“Thank you, Marco…” I whispered. “Thank you for choosing me… despite everything.”

He hugged me tighter, as though shielding me from the world outside. In his arms, I felt safe, protected from the venom, from the noise, from the chaos.

And in that quiet night, with the world momentarily hushed around us, we prayed for strength because we knew the storm was far from over.

One Week Later…

A strange sense of calm settled in me, knowing that Ismael was finally gone. But deep in my heart, I still carried the weight of my sister’s request, a request I could never fulfill.

Anyone else in my shoes might understand. Even if I didn’t grant her wish, it didn’t mean I stopped loving her.

I loved her deeply. She was my only sister, my twin. How could I not stretch my patience a little more?

And so, I made a decision.

When Ashley gets discharged, I’ll bring her home with us. She’s in a wheelchair now, and I’m confident she won’t be able to do anything harmful to me or Marco anymore.

Besides, I want Asher to know who his mother is. I want us to be together as a family, even if she still carries resentment. That’s on her. I will continue to care for her, regardless.

I couldn’t deny that she saved Marco’s life. In the end, she shielded him from that knife… She stepped in to protect him.

Morning as I walked through the hospital corridors, Marco’s hand warmed mine as we headed toward Ashley’s room.

Each step felt lighter. My heart was set. I was ready to understand her. Ready to try again. And I was deeply thankful for Marco, for standing beside me through it all.

I could already see the door to Ashley’s room. Today was her discharge day. And even if she could no longer walk, I made sure to greet her with a smile, one filled with nothing but love.

But that smile quickly faded when I saw a group of nurses suddenly rushing into her room, the doctor hurrying behind them.

Marco and I exchanged a glance, and without a word, we began walking faster, only to find chaos erupting in front of us. The medical team was frantically trying to resuscitate her.

My heart dropped. My breath hitched. And when I heard that sound, that flatline beeping I had only heard in movies, I knew something was terribly, terribly wrong.

I froze.

If it hadn’t been for Marco catching me, I would’ve collapsed right there on the floor.

Minutes passed like hours. The doctor finally turned to me, his expression grim, his voice heavy.

“Time of death… 10:42 AM.”

The sob that tore from my chest came without warning. It wasn't a quiet cry; it was a gut-wrenching, soul-deep scream of loss. Marco held me tightly as I broke down in his arms. I felt his hand rubbing circles on my back, grounding me as my world shattered again.

I felt empty.

My parents were gone.

And now, the only person who should’ve walked through life beside me has left me too.
