Chapter 69 Hurt
Chapter 69 Hurt
I walked unsteadily towards my apartment unit. The corridor I was walking through was eerily quiet. In front of my unit, I saw a man standing facing the entrance of my apartment, and from where I was, his face was barely visible. However, from his posture, I could guess who the man standing in front of my apartment was.
"Jake?" I muttered. As if noticing someone approaching, Jake turned his head and stared at me with a flat gaze.
He was still wearing the shirt he'd worn to work today, and from the look on his face, he looked tired. I wondered if he'd just gotten home from work.
I glanced at my watch; it was already 7:50 PM. He couldn't be walking around in that shirt unless he was working overtime.
"W-What are you doing here?" I asked, confused. He was silent for a moment, just staring at me without moving.
"Where have you been? Why are you just back? Didn't you have to work overtime today?" He asked aggressively, as if he were positioning himself as a possessive boyfriend.
"I was having coffee with Ze, he wanted to chat with me. You didn't answer my question. What are you doing at my door?"
"I rang the doorbell, but there was no answer, so I thought you might not be home yet."
"How long have you been standing here?"
"Twelve minutes, maybe," he said in a low voice.
I felt something strange about him, his face looked flushed and his voice sounded a little hoarse. Was he okay?
"Jake, are you—" Before I could finish, Jake fell into my arms, onto my shoulder.
I could hear his breathing, labored and labored. I immediately embraced him and realized he wasn't feeling well.
"My head hurts—" he said.
Without thinking, I opened the door to my apartment, helped him inside, and had him lie down on the sofa.
"Oh my God, you must be working so hard and neglecting your health!" I said as I checked his temperature by touching his forehead.
He was hot, he had a high fever. I quickly grabbed a thermometer and placed it on his body. His temperature read 39 degrees Celsius, which is very high for an adult. He must be in a lot of pain.
"I'll call the doctor, you have a high fever!"
"No need! I just want to rest!"
"No, Jake! You have a high fever, it'll be dangerous if you don't get treatment right away!"
"Just give me some fever medicine and painkillers. That's enough."
I was stunned, his face was red and he looked so weak. This was the first time I'd seen such a helpless side of him. Jake gripped my hand tightly, as if begging me to stay with him.
What did he really want from me? Why did he come to my place? I gave in and decided to follow his wishes.
"Okay, I'll get some water and a towel to apply a compress to you, then I'll get you some medicine!"
"Yes," he said before closing his eyes. I let him rest. Helped him take off his shoes and socks and unbuttoned his shirt to keep his temperature from rising.
I wondered if I should tell Henry at a time like this. But since that night, I'd been increasingly afraid of him. If I followed Aiden's advice and broke up with Henry, would everything be okay? Would it be okay to just end things like that?
I placed a towel soaked in cold water on Jake's forehead, brought him some medicine, and a glass of water. He was still asleep, although he should take some medicine to lower his temperature, but I didn't feel like waking him up now.
"He probably hasn't had dinner yet. He's been working so hard, and Henry's been so selfish with him. Jake, are you okay with all this? If you need my help, you can tell me, and I'll definitely try to help you."
Jake opened his eyes. In his sleep, he felt someone telling him he could ask for help if he really needed it. Jake looked to his left and saw a tray with a glass of water, a bowl of rice porridge with a boiled egg, and fever medicine. His body still felt very weak, but he knew that if he didn't take the medicine now, his fever wouldn't go away.
He tried to lift his head from the pillow, and the small towel folded on his forehead fell off. It reminded him of something he thought he'd heard while he was asleep.
"Jake, are you okay with all this? If you need my help, you can tell me, and I'll definitely try to help you."
The voice that spoke those words clearly knew who it belonged to. It made his heart beat faster involuntarily. He wanted to cry, but he didn't know why.
"Jake? Are you awake?" I asked after leaving my room to shower and change clothes. I saw Jake standing still, staring at me. His eyes were glassy, and that made me realize even more that something had happened to him and that it was incredibly painful for him.
"Amy?" He said, his voice trembling. I quickly walked over to him and hugged him tightly. Jake hugged me, his tears spilling into my embrace.
"Jake?"
"Amy, take me with you! Please, take me with you!"
