Chapter 61 Cliché Coincidence

Chapter 61 Cliché Coincidence
Jake stared at me with an expression that didn't seem to believe what I was saying. Did I look like I was lying? Was my confession that unconvincing to him?

"So you only want me around at times like this?"

"No, Jake! That's not it. I mean, your presence makes me feel calmer."

"So, Henry's presence makes you uneasy?"

"Jake, it seems like you keep misunderstanding me! I mean—"

"Haha..." Jake laughed heartily, having successfully pranked me and made me panic. He laughed, truly laughed. But had I ever seen him laugh like this before?

The expression on Jake's face that was imprinted in my mind and always remembered was a cold, intimidating one. Jake might not be an alpha male like Henry, but he had a mysterious charisma that seemed dark and powerful.

"Are you laughing?"

"Your stupid face looks so funny. I think you're just fine acting stupid like you usually are!"

"Hey, I'm not that stupid! If I were, I wouldn't be able to work for such a big company, right?"

"Is that so? Maybe you're right, but there could be another reason you were hired."

"Another reason? What?"

"Maybe because you're so beautiful," he said. Although it sounded like a compliment, I somehow felt like he was insulting me. I was hired because I'm beautiful? Was he serious? How could a company that big hire someone based solely on their physical appearance? That was absolutely ridiculous.

"You know that's impossible, right? Come on, Jake, why won't you admit that I seem competent enough to be part of that company?"

"No, it's true!"

"The only reason you were hired was because of your looks."

"What do you mean?"

"You graduated from a university in your city with mediocre grades and you're not particularly outstanding academically. Even though you're an IT graduate, your skills are still below standard to be accepted into this company. One of the shareholders in this company recommended you for the job and from what I heard, he's friends with your mother."

I was speechless, unable to believe what I was hearing. I was sure Jake wasn't serious about what he said. How could my beach-loving mother be friends with a shareholder in one of the largest technology companies in the country?

I looked down, trying to remember my mother's friends. She had many male friends, and she once told me she was reluctant to befriend people of low economic status.

After earning a lot of money from her illicit relationship, my mother opened a business buying and selling luxury jewelry, such as gold and diamonds. She increasingly made connections with businesspeople, celebrities, and important officials. Our previously simple life slowly became much better.

"Who are you referring to?"

"Mr. Richard McDowell."

"Richard McDowell?" I tried to recall that name among the many friends I might have known.

Richard McDowell, the name was familiar to me, but somehow, remembering it felt unsettling. It was as if the face of a man in his forties with light brown hair appeared in my head.

"Do you know him?" Jake asked, trying to determine if I really knew who Richard McDowell was. Although I wasn't sure about my intuition, Jake's confession about why I was hired at the company deeply disturbed me. Did he really think I was so incompetent and unworthy of joining the company?

"Do you really think I'm unworthy of being there?"

"I'm just asking, do you know Richard McDowell or not?"

"If I did know him, what would that mean? That would mean I'm completely incompetent and shouldn't be there, right?"

I felt so angry because, in the end, the only aspect of me that could be judged was my physical appearance. Being born a woman to parents of mixed races had always made me stand out and stand out. From a young age, people who saw me would always praise me as the most beautiful girl they had ever seen.

As I grew into my teens, my figure became much more impressive. My hourglass figure, with its large, firm breasts, shapely hips, and buttocks, made all eyes immediately turn to me whenever I passed. I was so used to being a very beautiful girl that I no longer considered my birthright as a significant privilege.

"Mr. Richard McDowell is very close to Henry. He asked Henry to hire you for the company. When he first saw you, Henry was very impressed because you were much more beautiful than he thought. Therefore, your current relationship with him is not a cliché coincidence, but something he had planned long before he confessed his feelings for you."

"Is that so? So what should I do now? Besides breaking up with him, should I also quit my job at the company?" I asked in a desperate tone.

"That's not necessary!"

"I understand why you always yell at me at work and think I'm incompetent. If I resign, you won't have to bother yelling at me anymore, and you can have Henry all to yourself."

"I want you to stay!"

"What?"

Jake took my hand and pulled me into his embrace. He gazed into my eyes with a soft, deep gaze before finally kissing me on the lips.

"I feel like I need you. So please stay!"
