77- A boy
Sebastian
Now that she's said it, it really is true, I was so focused on the fact of the pregnancy and how she was feeling about it, that I didn't even think much when I heard about the weeks of gestation. If that's the case, it means that she got pregnant practically on our first night together. Fuck, a lot happened and she was pregnant the whole time and nobody noticed? I stared at the flat belly and wondered where the baby was, it really doesn't look like there's a baby inside that belly. I thought that all pregnancies are with big bellies and stuff, where is this baby hiding?
That means we have four months until this child arrives and no matter what happens, that's the time I have to get rid of all the enemies and bring back the days of peace.
\- Where is this baby hiding? - he asks in disbelief.
\- You know this could happen. - is all the doctor says. - Well, all that matters is that this big boy is fine, his heart is beating strong and everything seems to be in order, only his weight seems a little below normal. As you've just discovered, I'm going to prescribe all the necessary vitamins and what care you have to take from now on. Knowing how intensely you live, it's a surprise that this child is well. Do you still smoke? - she asks.
Like me, Rebeca seems to have only focused on one part of what the doctor said.
\- Is it a boy? - she asks.
\- Yes, he's a nice boy. Did you hear the rest of what I said? - the doctor asks patiently.
\- Yes, don't worry, I'll take good care of myself and I gave up smoking years ago, so it's not a worry. - Rebeca confirms that she heard what she said.
A boy. I'm going to be the father of a boy.
I vaguely remember Roderick telling me that he found Rebeca smoking the night she got her codename, but since I met her, she hasn't touched a cigarette once, so I can prove that she doesn't have this habit anymore, unlike me, who doesn't smoke to excess, but does it when I'm very nervous or when I've finished executing someone and need to think about some things.
I'm going to put an end to this habit, I don't want anything to harm Rebeca and my son, it's enough to know that she's not eating properly for the baby's growth, I don't want to contribute in a negative way.
\- I can't believe I'm actually pregnant. If I hadn't found out today, I wouldn't know when it would be. - she mumbles in disbelief.
\- Don't worry, everything will be fine. That's the date for our next appointment and here are the vitamins you need to take. Eat well and feel grateful that he's so healthy and that you haven't suffered from nausea and strange cravings. - Amelia smiles and hands us the prescription and the date of our return.
\- Thank you, Amelia. See you soon. - Rebeca approaches and the doctor hugs her warmly.
\- See you later, Dr. Sinclair. - I say goodbye and go after Rebeca.
When she sat down in the car, she sighed for a long time and looked at me with a strange expression, I looked at her with the same expression as always and for no apparent reason, she started to cry.
I approached her and hugged her gently, just as I had done before.
\- Why are you crying? - I asked.
\- We're going to have a baby. - she says.
\- Yes, I realized that a while ago. - I say.
\- But it wasn't supposed to happen. - I sniffle. - What if you get angry with me? - I ask.
I frowned, not understanding her question. Why on earth would I be angry with her? As far as I know, this child is the result of mutual work, besides, neither of us expected anything like this now, it was a surprise and we're both surprised by it, the only thing we can do now, is do our best for this baby.
\- Why would I be angry? - I ask.
\- It's just that we didn't talk about it, I don't even know if you wanted a child now, or even if you wanted children at some point, I don't know what to do, I'm very surprised and I'm afraid of what might happen now. - she cries.
\- Don't worry about anything, I'm not angry and I have no right to be. We made this baby together and we're going to look after it in the same way, okay? - I try to appease her chaotic feelings. I don't want her to keep crying, I'm worried it'll hurt her in some way.
\- It's all right. - She sniffles and shakes her head.
I wipe her eyes with the sleeve of my coat and tidy up her messy hair. I kissed her eyes tenderly and stroked her cheek lovingly. She closed her eyes for a moment, then pulled away from my touch and returned to her seat.
I drove back to the apartment in silence. Somewhere along the way, she fell asleep and it made me feel better to see her resting after all the shock. I still can't believe that what started out as an unassuming lie suddenly and unexpectedly became the truth.
It's hard to take in, it's something I never imagined, but when I heard from Rebekah that she was pregnant, it seemed natural to simply believe it was true, even though she vehemently denied it at first, you can tell it was a huge shock for her.
Now, what we can do is strive to do everything we can to ensure that this child is born in the best possible conditions.
I need to speed things up, waiting is a luxury I no longer have.
With Anastasia's possible arrest, I hope that her relatives will move and start moving in the way we hope, so that we can do the same quickly and accurately, and I also want this conflict to take place away from Rebecca. The best thing would be to send her somewhere, just the thought of something going wrong and her getting hurt leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
I want to keep her safe at all costs.
I took her up in my arms, she was sleeping heavily and I didn't want to wake her, I laid her gently on the bed, checked that she didn't have a fever or anything and when I saw that everything was fine, I let her sleep peacefully and headed for the office I keep here.
I took out my cell phone and immediately called Roderick, he needed to know about the new situation.
It wasn't long before he picked up.
\- Sebastian? I heard your house caught fire, is Rebeca all right? - he asks as soon as he answers.
It seems she had intended to call me.
\- Yes, everything's fine. Rebeca was the one who set the place on fire, there's no need to worry. - I say inexpressively.
\- That's something Rebecca would do, it's not surprising. - she says.
\- It seems she has a history. - I smile as I think about what she's done to make people expect her to set fire to a house in such a nonchalant way.
\- Well, she's never done that before, but she's done lots of other things. Maybe one day I'll tell you. - she says.
\- That can wait. I heard your wife gave birth. - I say.
\- Yes, I'm very happy about all of this and that I've had the chance to see my little one with my own eyes much earlier than I anticipated. - there's a note of pride and something else in his voice.
\- Regarding the timing of the operation, something has come up and we need to speed it up as soon as possible, we can't wait any longer. - I say.
\- But everything isn't ready yet. Are you sure everything is all right? We could lose people because of this, what could be so important? - you ask.
I understand the complexity and the careful way we were acting so as not to cause unnecessary conflicts, but the scenario is different now and I can't wait any longer.
\- Something more important than anything. You'll agree with me when you know. - I'll start.
\- What is it? - he asks. His voice is full of curiosity.
\- Rebeca is pregnant. - I say bluntly.
There's a moment of silence on the other end of the line until Roderick seems to pull himself together.
\- But that's great news! - he exclaims.
\- We just found out, it was unexpected, since she has an IUD. - I say.
\- Oh, now I understand your concern, fortunately we have many months before the baby comes. - he says.
\- No, we don't. She's five months pregnant, it's a boy. - I explain the reason for my haste.
Roderick curses quite creatively on the other end of the line and doesn't seem to believe me.
\- What the hell? You've been married for just about that long. Does that mean she did and went through all those situations while she was pregnant and didn't know it? - you ask.
\- Yes, we thought exactly the same thing. As surprising as it is, we confirmed it not even an hour ago with an ultrasound scan, I heard the heartbeat and everything. We only have four months until it's born, if it doesn't come sooner than expected. - I say.
\- I see. Don't worry, I'll speed everything up. - I assure you.
\- Good. All I want right now is to take care of all the traitorous bastards and keep Rebecca safe. - I warn you.
\- We'll do that and don't worry, I'll keep my sister's delicate condition a secret. - you say.
\- Good, you know what to do. - I then end the call and get lost in thought.
I sighed as I stared at the ceiling and almost reached for a cigarette, but immediately remembered that I'm going to stop smoking so as not to harm Rebecca or the baby in any way. It's still hard to assimilate and just thinking about the months to come and the moment of delivery, I confess I feel a certain unease, an insecurity. I'm afraid that what happened to my mother will also happen to her. It's silly to think something like that, people aren't the same, but the possibility exists and that doesn't make me very sure.
I just want everything to go well and smoothly.
