CHAPTER EIGHTY-TWO | TEMPTATION AND RESTRAINT
ASPEN
The room was quiet in that way that pressed against the ears, the kind of silence that comes after a long day of pretending to be strong. I could feel Ronan beside me even before I opened my eyes. He wasn’t asleep.
His body kept shifting, the mattress dipping and rising, his breath uneven like he was fighting something he didn’t want to name.
I lay still, listening to him wrestle the dark. Every movement felt sharp, restless, and dangerous. He hadn’t been able to stay still since we came in. His back was turned to me, shoulders tense, jaw tight. It hurt more than I expected, watching him carry things he refused to put down.
I reached for him without thinking. My arm slid around his waist, pulling him back until his spine met my chest. He stiffened at first, like he might pull away, but I held on. I pressed my forehead between his shoulders and breathed him in, slow and steady, the way you calm something wild.
“It’s okay,” I whispered, though I wasn’t sure what I meant.
His resistance softened. His weight sank into me inch by inch, like he was finally giving in to gravity. His hand came up to grip my wrist, not to stop me, but to anchor himself. For a moment we just stayed there, tangled and quiet, my heartbeat drumming against his back.
I felt him exhale, long and shaky. Then he turned.
The movement was sudden and decisive. He rolled until we were facing each other, his face inches from mine in the dark. I barely had time to register the look in his eyes before his mouth was on mine.
The kiss wasn’t gentle. I wasn't careful. It was the kind of kiss that steals your breath and doesn’t apologize for it. His lips pressed into mine with a hunger that felt like it had been building for days, maybe longer. I gasped, fingers curling into his shirt as if that was the only thing keeping me grounded.
I kissed him back, slow at first, tasting the tension he’d been holding. His hand slid to my waist, firm and possessive, pulling me closer until there was no space left to pretend we were being careful. The heat between us flared, sharp and undeniable.
There was something dangerous in the way he kissed me, like he was standing on the edge of something he might fall into if he wasn’t careful. I felt it in the way his thumb traced my hip, then stilled, like he was stopping himself. That hesitation made my chest ache.
“Ronan,” I breathed, my voice barely there.
He pulled back just enough to rest his forehead against mine. Our breaths are tangled, hot and uneven. I could feel the tension in him, coiled tight beneath my hands.
“You shouldn’t do this,” he murmured, but he didn’t move away.
I smiled softly, my fingers sliding up his neck, feeling his pulse racing beneath my touch. “You’re already here.”
That was all it took.
His mouth found mine again, slower this time, deeper. The kiss turned unhurried and deliberate, like he wanted to memorize me. I felt every shift of his body, every controlled movement that said he was trying not to lose himself completely.
His hand slid up my side, stopping just short of places that made my breath hitch. That restraint was intoxicating. It felt like standing too close to a flame, knowing it would burn if you leaned in just a little more.
I arched into him without thinking, a quiet invitation. He groaned softly, the sound vibrating through me, and for a moment his control wavered. His grip tightened, then loosened, like he was choosing me over whatever darkness was clawing at him.
The danger wasn’t just in what he might do. It was in what he was holding back.
I kissed along his jaw, down to his neck, feeling his breath catch. His skin was warm and familiar, and it made something fierce rise in me. I wanted to be the thing that grounded him, the thing that kept him here instead of wherever his mind kept dragging him.
His hands framed my face, thumbs brushing my cheeks with surprising tenderness. The contrast undid me. Power and care, restraint and want, all tangled together.
“If I keep going,” he said quietly, “I won’t stop.”
I met his gaze in the dark, my heart pounding. “Then don’t.”
The look he gave me then was raw and unguarded. He kissed me again, slower and deeper, pouring everything he wasn’t saying into the space between us. Time stretched, thick and heavy, until the world narrowed to breath and touch and the quiet promise of what we were choosing not to rush.
Eventually, his movements slowed. He rested his forehead against mine, our bodies still close, still burning, but held in check. His arm wrapped around me, pulling me against his chest like he was afraid to let go.
We stayed like that, tangled in the dark, the danger lingering in the air between us. Not satisfied, not undone, just suspended in that electric space where desire and restraint meet.
And somehow, that was enough for now.
I lay there afterward, wide awake, tracing invisible lines on his back with my fingertips. His breathing had evened out, but I knew he wasn’t fully asleep. Ronan never truly slept when his mind was at war. Every now and then his muscles tightened beneath my touch, like he was bracing for something that never came.
The moonlight slipped through the curtains, pale and watchful. It painted his shoulder in silver, making him look almost unreal. I pressed my lips there, a quiet promise I didn’t have words for. He shifted, pulling me closer, his arm tightening around my waist like instinct had taken over where thought failed.
Being this close felt reckless. Outside these walls, everything was teeth and blood and power plays. Inside, with him, it was temptation of a different kind, the kind that could make you forget what you were supposed to fear. I wondered if this was how people lost wars, not on battlefields, but in beds like this, choosing warmth over armor.
His fingers brushed my spine, slow and grounding. Not asking. Not talking. Just there. It sent a shiver through me that had nothing to do with the cold. I rested my head against his chest and listened to his heart, steady now, as if mine had taught it how.
If danger was a language, this was its softest dialect. Quiet. Intimate. Lethal in the way it made you stay.
I closed my eyes, knowing sleep might come, knowing morning would bring consequences. But for that moment, wrapped in him, I chose the risk.
