Chapter 20 TRUTH AND LOVE

Chapter 20 TRUTH AND LOVE
Annabella
The hum of the ICU is the soundtrack to my life now. It has been over three weeks. Three weeks of Elias thriving, his tiny, furious cries filling the special medical suite they set up for us, while Killian remains motionless in the private wing. I feel like I'm living in two separate realities: the fierce, demanding warmth of my son, and the cold, terrifying silence of the man I love. The man who took a bullet for me.
I walk into the suite after feeding Elias. Luciano is sitting in the armchair, nursing a cup of tea, looking less like a ruthless businessman and more like a weary sentry.
"He's still asleep," Luciano says before I can even ask. It’s his standard answer.
I sink onto the sofa, dropping my head into my hands. "I just don't know how much more I can take, Luciano. I talk to him, I touch him, I tell him Elias is growing, that he needs his father... and nothing."
"Annabella," he says gently, moving to sit beside me. "His body has been through hell. The doctors are confident the recovery is physical now, not neurological. He just needs time. And quiet."
"Quiet is what is killing me," I whisper. "And what about the company? Stop protecting me. Tell me the truth about Astor Corp."
Luciano sighs, running a hand through his perpetually neat hair. "The truth is, Killian's internal opposition is having a field day. Harrison Grey, Killian's uncle, the wicked one, he’s demanding an emergency board meeting. He says if Killian can’t lead, the board must appoint an interim CEO to avoid financial panic."
My breath catches. "An interim CEO who answers to Harrison."
"Exactly. He’s seizing the opportunity. The corporate sharks smell blood. And what’s worse, Annabella, we’ve definitively tracked the funds that hired Finn Thorne, the man who almost killed you and Killian. They run straight through a series of shell companies linked directly to Grey's private offshore network. We know he orchestrated this, but he's vanished. He's a ghost, hiding in the shadows, waiting for the company to crumble."
I feel a cold, hard knot of fury tighten in my chest. He tried to destroy my life, murder the man I love, and leave my son orphaned, all for power.
I stand up abruptly, the movement decisive. "That ends today. Luciano, what is the one thing they don't have? The one thing that gives Killian's position absolute, undeniable legitimacy?"
Luciano looks up at me, his eyes widening as the realization hits him. "The legal status. Killian’s final directive states that if he is incapacitated, his wife and his son are the legal owners, and she assumes the title of Chairman, with me as co-CEO. But you haven't done the paperwork..."
"I don't care about the paperwork yet," I state, my voice rock-steady. "I care about the perception. Harrison thinks I'm a target, a weak, hysterical woman he can frighten away. He doesn't expect a counterattack. He expects me to hide."
"And you want to do the opposite," Luciano finishes, a spark of professional excitement igniting in his eyes.
"I am the Astor Matriarch now," I say, the title feeling heavy but true on my tongue. "We are going to give the press something to talk about besides bankruptcy: The announcement of the new, temporary Chairman. Get the paperwork ready. I’m stepping into his world, Luciano. I’m holding the line."
He doesn’t argue, doesn't try to reason me out of it. He sees the resolve. "You’ll need a full security detail, Annabella. From this moment on, you don't step outside the mansion grounds until Grey is apprehended."
"Agreed," I say. "Now, brief me on the quarterly earnings. I need to walk into that boardroom knowing exactly where his hidden vulnerabilities are."
Later that evening, after hours of absorbing data and directives, I perform my nightly ritual. I leave Elias with a trusted nurse and walk the lonely hall to Killian's room. I’m wearing a structured black dress, my armor.
I sit by his bedside, taking his large, still hand. The machine beside him provides a relentless, rhythmic beep-beep that used to be a comfort, but now sounds like a countdown.
"Killian," I whisper, leaning close, "I'm not the scared girl who ran from your office anymore. I'm the mother of your son, and tomorrow, I’m going to be the Chairman of your company."
I squeeze his hand, willing my strength into him. "I found out the truth. Harrison is the one. He hired the men, he orchestrated the attack, and he’s trying to steal everything you built. He's hiding, but he thinks I'm too weak to fight back. He thinks the moment you fell, I would fall with you."
I brush a tear from my eye, the emotion finally breaking through my professional facade. "I made a vow, Killian. That I would love you, and that I would fight for our son. You kept your vow, taking that bullet for me. Now I keep mine. I will hold your empire together until you walk through those doors and take it back. I will find Harrison, and I will destroy him, legally and financially."
I rest my head on his chest, listening to the mechanical rise and fall of his breathing. The silence is crushing, and for a moment, I feel utterly, hopelessly alone.
"Please, Killian," I beg, my voice cracking, "I need to know you hear me. I can be strong for the company, but I can't be strong for you without you. Just a sign. Just a twitch. You have to wake up. We have a son. I need you."
I’m focused on the rhythmic thump-thump of the monitor, willing his heart to beat stronger, when I feel it. A movement. Not my own breathing, not the blanket.
I raise my head instantly. His large, strong hand, the one I am holding, just squeezed mine. A definite, solid pressure.
"Killian?" I gasp, my voice trembling.
His eyelids are fluttering rapidly beneath his brow. He takes a deep, ragged breath—a breath not governed by the machine. Then, slowly, painfully, his deep blue eyes open. They are cloudy, weak, but fixed directly on mine.
I stare, unable to move, unable to breathe. Tears of pure, unadulterated joy stream down my face, blurring my vision.
He tries to speak. His throat is dry, the sound a painful, strangled croak. "Annabella…"
"Yes! I'm here!" I cry, covering his hand with kisses. "Oh, God, Killian, you're awake! You're awake!"
He squeezes my hand again, harder this time. He manages another word, a whisper that cuts through the sterile air.
"Harrison..."
"Don't worry about him," I assure him instantly, gently stroking his cheek. "He’s gone for now. But he’s running, and we have his company. We have everything you need. We'll find him, darling, I promise. But right now, you rest. You heal. I've got this."
I pull the emergency cord, shouting for the nurse. The room immediately floods with the medical team, but this time, it’s a flurry of relief. He is stabilized, lucid, and already trying to pull the oxygen tube out of his nose.
An hour later, I stand with Luciano outside his recovery room.
"He's awake," I repeat, the relief making my entire body tremble. "He looked at me and squeezed my hand. He knew exactly who he was, and the first thing he asked about was Harrison."
Luciano smiles, a genuine, joyful look that crinkles the corners of his eyes. "He is Killian Astor. Nothing less would be expected. The danger is over, Annabella. The immediate danger."
"The immediate danger is over," I agree, holding my head high. "But the professional one begins. Get the final papers to the board now. They need to hear the news of their CEO's recovery at the same time they hear the news of their new Chairman. Send an official statement to the press: Killian Astor is stable and his wife, Annabella Astor, is now leading the company until his full return."
I look at the recovery room door, my eyes fierce with love and purpose. "The empire is safe, and the family is whole. Harrison Grey may be out there, but he just awakened the wrong man and underestimated the wrong woman. We will be waiting for him."
