Chapter 270 Double Pulse

Chapter 270 Double Pulse

Ryker drove down the winding dirt road toward the border ridge and Lyra sat right behind him, her arms wrapped around his waist, her face pressed against his back.

She could feel how tense and tight his muscles were even though he was driving smoothly, she knew he was still deeply hurt over what had happened with Dax the previous week.

She wanted to comfort him and be there for him. Which was why she was riding behind him despite the chill morning sir.

Ryker finally brought the bike to a stop, kicking the kickstand down and turned his head and looked at her.

"You didn't need to come along for this, Lyra," Ryker said softly. "The doctor said you should be resting in our quarters."

"I told you I’m not staying behind while you come here alone," Lyra replied, stepping off the bike with his help.

“Are you okay?" He asked and pulled his shirt, laying it over her shoulder, "you're shivering.”

She smiled sheepishly, "I didn't know it would be this cold.”

"Sperry, baby,” he said softly and pulled her closer.

Ryker unbuckled a leather strap on the back rack and took down a small suitcase.

It was a heavy leather box that held everything that belonged to Dax, his old pack properties, keys and some family heirloom that their mother had given to him.

They walked to the edge of the stone railing, looking down at the deep, rushing river below.

Lyra looked at the box, then up at his face. "Are you sure about this, Ryker?"

Ryker nodded without hesitation. "I am sure. I don't want my child to grow up knowing a psychopath. I want him and his memory all gone.”

Lyra looked at him for a second, seeing the determination in his face.

She reached out and took the suitcase from his hands. Without saying another word, she lifted it over the rail and dropped it into the depths.

The box hit the water with a loud splash, sinking instantly into the dark, rushing current.

Ryker stared down at the water for a minute, watching the ripples disappear.

He let out a long sigh and turned to face her, his brown eyes looking softer.

"I know you're alone now," Lyra said. "With Dax gone, you might feel like the house is empty."

Ryker stepped closer, reaching up to take her small hands in his large ones. "Hey, you are my family, and that is all that matters. We are going to build our own future now."

A small smile finally touched her lips. "Let's go back home. The wind is getting cold."

They rode back to the estate quietly and he made sure she was secure in front of him this time, wrapping his arms around her.

When they parked the bike in the lower garage, Ryker was about to lead her inside when she pulled him back.

“I have something to tell you," she muttered with a wide smile.

Ryker tried to share the excitement even though he was clearly confused. “Okay, what's it, baby?"

“It's…well, I'd love to show you instead."

She winked at him and dragged him towards the garden.

“Are you an exhibitionist now? I thought you said we shouldn't make love in the garden anymore," Ryker whispered as he followed her, already getting an erection at the mere thought of touching his wife again.

“Get your mind out of the gutters, Ryker. I'm not trying to fuck you all the time."

“Ha!" He retorted, “I barely get any sleep these days, Lyra. I think everyone on night patrol knows that."

Lyra paused and glared at him playfully, "the baby needs his dad inside me.”

"Blame it on the hormones, yeah, right,” Ryker rolled his eyes and then followed her down the garden.

But as they rounded the thick hedge of rose bushes near the old stone fountain, they stopped dead in their tracks.

Wayne and Rex were standing against the stone wall, locked in a passionate embrace, making out, their hands literally all over each other.

Wayne's arms were wrapped around her waist, tugging at her shirt and Rex had her fingers tangled in his shirt, entirely oblivious to the rest of the world.

Ryker paused and cleared his throat loudly.

At once, they pulled away, their eyes widening in shock.

Wayne stumbled backward, nearly tripping over a flower pot, while Rex gasped, quickly pulling down her shirt and poking away.

"What?!" Lyra cried out, a huge grin breaking across her face. "When did you guys..."

Wayne looked completely panicked. "Alpha! Luna! I am so sorry! We didn't mean to... I mean, this isn't what it looks like—well, it is what it looks like, but I apologize!"

Ryker looked at him then at Rex, who was biting her lip nervously. Then he let out a chuckle. "No, Wayne, stop stammering. It's fine. I’m actually happy for you both."

Rex looked up, a small sigh of relief escaping her lips. “Really?"

“Yeah, you're single, Rex. And you deserve to be happy, Wayne's a great guy."

Then he glared at Wayne warningly, clearly telling him that if he mistreated Rex, he'd have to answer to him.

"He’s been comforting me ever since I recovered from the hypnosis. He stayed by my bed all night to make sure the headaches didn't come back, and well..."

"You don't need to explain anything to us," Ryker said, stepping forward and clapping Wayne on his uninjured shoulder. "You have my full blessings, soldier. You took care of her when my own brother tried to destroy her."

Wayne grinned widely and nodded. "Thank you, boss."

“So, does anyone else know?" Lyra asked curiously, genuinely happy for her friend.

She'd never have thought these two were attracted to each other but…well, seeing them together was so cute.

“Well, I told a few of the guards…” Wayne rubbed his head, "I've always liked Rex, I care about her and I wanted to ask her out before…well before I heard Dax was her fated mate. I didn't want to stand in the way.”

Rex looked down shyly, "I guess I'm not too strong and boyish after all.”

"You're perfect, I like every bit of you, Rex.”

Lyra clapped excitedly and then winked at Rex who was still blushing.

Rex smiled, reaching out to take Wayne’s hand. "We’ll leave you two alone now. We were just heading down to the library."

"No, wait," Lyra said, stepping in front of them with a bright sparkle in her blue eyes. "Don't move away just yet. Since we’re all here together, I think I should just go ahead and make my announcement."

Ryker turned to her, his brow furrowing in curiosity. "An announcement? What are you talking about, Lyra?"

Lyra looked at her husband, her smile turning mischievous. "Well, remember what you just said on the stone bridge a few minutes ago? You said you didn't want your child to grow up around any such trouble or psychopaths."

"Yes," Ryker nodded slowly, looking confused. "What about that?"

Lyra took a deep breath, placing both of her hands flat over her stomach. "Okay, the thing is... it’s not a child, Ryker."

Ryker froze and suddenly looked scared. "What?! Did something happen to the baby? Don't tell me that madman hurt you during the struggle on the bike! Tell me the truth, Lyra! If he did something to endanger you, I will go hunt him down right now and actually execute him myself!"

"No, Ryker, stop!" Lyra laughed, grabbing his wrists to calm him down. "Nobody hurt me! The baby is perfectly safe! What I am trying to tell you is that it’s not a child. It’s children.”

"Children?”

"We’re having twins!"

Wayne let out a loud gasp, his jaw dropping open, while Rex clapped her hands over her mouth in pure delight.

Ryker stood perfectly still, his eyes widening to the size of saucers as the words processed through his mind.

He looked down at her stomach, then back up at her face, his lips trembling. "Twins? Two of them?"

"Yes," Lyra whispered excitedly. "Two little pulses."

With a loud shout of pure happiness,
Ryker lunged forward and gathered her up in his arms. He lifted her completely off the ground, spinning her around in the center of the garden.

He kissed her forehead, her cheeks, and then pressed a deep, passionate kiss against her lips, holding her close against his chest as if he would never let her go.

"Two previous little pups," Ryker murmured against her mouth. "Goddess, Lyra, you’re amazing."

"Congratulations, Luna!" Rex cheered, rushing forward to wrap Lyra in a tight hug.

"This is incredible, Alpha!" Wayne barked. "The pack hasn't had a twin in centuries!"

Once Ryker finally set Lyra back on her feet, Lyra wiped her eyes and looked at the two lovers. "Well, since we are celebrating, I actually made dinner before we rode out. I was hoping you and Rex would just join us out here."

Wayne looked around the corner of the hedge. "Join you where?"

"Right there," Lyra said, pointing toward the grass clearing near the fountain.

They all noticed that a large flannel blanket was already set out on the green grass, surrounded by soft pillows.

Right on cue, three young maids began walking from the kitchen, carrying silver platters covered in roasted meats, fresh bread, fruit baskets, and bottles of dark wine.

"A picnic," Rex said, her eyes shining. "This is perfect, Lyra."

"Sit down, everyone," Lyra commanded and Ryker helped her down, sat right behind her, pulling her back against his chest so he could wrap his arms around her waist, his hands resting protectively over her belly.

This felt like a gift from the moon goddess herself, two blessings for his misery.
