Chapter 267 Reunited
Chapter 267 Reunited
It was a few hours later, and Lyra was pacing the clinic hallway anxiously.
After Dax had claimed to reverse the hypnosis, the guards had taken Rex back to her clinic room so the doctor could examine her. Lyra could not keep still when her mind was fixed on her friend.
Ryker stood behind her, watching her move back and forth. "Lyra, sit down. The doctor is with her now. You need to breathe or you'll hurt yourself and the baby."
"I can't sit down, Ryker," Lyra said worriedly. "What if it didn't work? What if his release phrase didn't break the block?"
She stopped pacing and turned to face Dax who was sitting on a wooden bench across the hall, his wrists still bound in iron chains, guarded by two wolves.
"Make sure nothing happens to her, Dax," Lyra warned angrily, almost spitting in his face. "Because if she's not fixed, I will never forgive you. I will personally make sure you pay for all of this."
Dax lifted his head, a cruel smirk touching his lips. "Really? That’s how much you hate me now, Lyra? You’re going to use your hybrid strength on your own brother-in-law? I’m not afraid of you, right? I’m not like him. I’m not like my brother, who is secretly terrified of the fact that you’re a hybrid."
Ryker stepped between them and glared down at his sibling. "Come on, brother. You already know you’ve lost this game, right? You cannot make my wife hate me, and you certainly cannot make me hate my wife. You’ve been the one spreading that rumor all around the pack territory for months, telling everyone that I’m afraid of her because of her hybrid strength. But you were completely wrong. I’ve never been afraid of my wife. I love her and I cherish her."
Lyra looked at him and then felt her heart swell a little bit.
Ryker took a deep breath and added. "We had a rough start, and it has not been easy for our bloodlines, but I would do anything in this world to keep her safe. You can't tear us apart, Dax. So just quit it. It’s getting pathetic."
Dax looked away and went silent as Lyra continued to pace the entire place.
The glass door of the observation room suddenly opened and the head pack doctor stepped out into the hallway, pulling off his stethoscope.
He looked at Ryker and Lyra and nodded. "She is awake, Alpha. You can go in and see her."
Lyra let out a gasp of relief, moving instantly toward the handle.
Dax started to stand up from the wooden bench, his chains clanking against the floor, but Ryker placed a hand against his uninjured shoulder, shoving him back down.
"No," Ryker barked flatly. "You stay away from the room. We don't need you to break her mind again."
Ryker turned his head toward the two guards standing beside him. "Watch him and make sure he doesn't take a single step into this clinic. Once I tell you it's okay from inside, take him straight back to the prison."
"Hey!" Dax yelled. "We had a deal, Ryker! Remember? I was supposed to heal your library girl, and then you were supposed to let me go! That was the bargain!"
Ryker stopped at the doorframe, turning his cold eyes onto his brother for the last time. "No. I never made a single deal with you, Dax. You’re a traitor to this pack, and you simply fixed what you broke. There is no bargain here. You’re incredibly lucky I’m not killing you myself right now, brother. You deserve to die for what you did."
Without waiting for Dax’s reply, Ryker slid the glass door open, stepped inside the clinic room with Lyra and slammed the door shut while he kept yelling from outside.
As Lyra and Ryker entered, Rex was seated on the edge of the bed, her long silver hair brushed back, her eyes looking clear and perfectly focused for the first time in days.
The constant muttering and twitching and scratching was gone. The moment the door opened, she turned her head toward the entrance, her face softening instantly.
"Alpha... Luna..." Rex said softly.
"Oh my goodness, Rex!" Lyra cried out, her voice breaking with emotion. "It’s you. You’re back!"
Lyra rushed across the room, throwing her arms around the girl’s neck and holding her in a fierce, tight hug.
Rex winced slightly, her hand rising to touch her temples as she hugged Lyra back.
"What happened?" Rex asked, her voice raspy as they pulled apart. "My head hurts so bad. It feels like someone drove an iron spike through my skull."
Lyra sat on the edge of the bed, keeping a firm grip on her hands. "Can't you remember anything from the last three days, Rex?"
Rex shook her head slowly, her brow furrowed in confusion. "No, I can't. The last thing I remember clearly is that you both left the pack territory for the human town, and I was studying the scrolls in the library like Alpha Ryker instructed. I was sitting there with the books... and then nothing. I can't remember anything else at all."
Hot tears spilled over Lyra’s cheeks as she squeezed her friend's fingers. "Oh my god, Rex, I'm so incredibly sorry. We left you alone with that monster. We never knew he would do something so terrible to your mind."
Rex blinked, looking from Lyra to Ryker, who was standing at the foot of the bed with his arms crossed. "What are you talking about, Lyra? Who did what to me?"
Ryker stepped forward. "My brother Dax hypnotized you three nights ago, Rex. He used a medallion and some dark magic to lock your wolf into submission. Your mind was trapped in a loop trying to fight the command, which is why you were acting insane."
Rex’s silver eyes widened in total shock, her face turning pale against the white pillows. "Oh my god... Dax did that to me?"
"Yes," Ryker nodded. "But he’s going to face the punishment for all he did, according to the pack law, Rex. I will personally make sure he doesn't get away with any of this, okay?"
Rex swallowed hard, her fingers trembling slightly inside Lyra's grip before she gave a small, brave nod. "Okay."
Lyra wiped her eyes as she looked at Rex’s clear silver eyes and offered a wide, soft smile. "Do you at least remember the good news I tried to tell you yesterday?"
Rex confusedly shook her head. "No... what good news, Lyra?"
Lyra’s smile widened, her hand dropping automatically to her stomach. "I'm pregnant, Rex. Ryker and I are having a baby."
Rex froze for a split second, her eyes darting down to Lyra’s stomach, and then she yelped in excitement. "Oh my god! Lyra! I'm so unbelievably happy for you!"
Rex lunged forward from the mattress, throwing her arms around Lyra’s shoulders as both women got into a fierce, emotional hug, rocking back and forth on the edge of the bed.
Ryker watched them from the corner, a rare, genuine smile softening his rugged face.
"I am finally going to be a godmother!" Rex laughed through her tears, squeezing Lyra’s jacket.
Lyra pulled back just enough to look her in the eyes. "No, Rex. You're going to be an auntie. Because you are the only real family I have left in this valley right now. You, and my husband."
Rex let out a fresh sob, burying her face back into Lyra's shoulder.
Both women held onto each other tightly, crying over the new life that seemed just a step away. A life that seemed like it would bring them joy like never before.
