Chapter 264 A Ray of Hope

Chapter 264 A Ray of Hope
Ryker looked very hopeful as he turned to the doctor, “Are you very sure of this? Have you done a second test just to be sure?"

But the doctor simply chuckled, "I've been a doctor long enough to know what a positive pregnancy test looks like.”

“Okay, I'm just trying to be certain, Doctor. I never…I never imagined my wife was pregnant.”

"Yeah, she is. Two months gone actually. Thankfully she didn't hurt the baby after the entire ordeal.”

"Two months?" Lyra asked and looked down at the doctor, then at her own hands. "But the fever, the crash... how is that possible?"

"Hybrid biology is incredibly strong, Luna," the doctor explained. "Your system went into what I'll call a protective lockdown to shield the embryo from the external trauma of the last few weeks. It's almost a miracle, ma'am. The heartbeats are faint but perfectly steady."

A sudden, bright laugh broke from Ryker’s chest as he leaned forward and buried his face against Lyra’s neck, his shoulders shaking as he cried.

Lyra held him, smiling, “Stop being so mushy, Ryker."

He wrapped his arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off the pillows to hold her tight.

"A baby, Lyra," Ryker murmured against her skin in a voice she had never heard from him before. "We’re having a child. An heir to the pack."

Lyra wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders and couldn't help her own tears of excitement.

“I never even thought we could have kids anymore now that you're a hybrid," he shook his head in astonishment.

She laughed through her tears, her fingers digging into his short black hair. "Two months, Ryker. We didn't even know."

"Just like the Alpha said, your probability of having a child was pretty slim. It's a miracle and because of that, we will monitor the baby every three days," the doctor said, a satisfied smile on his face as he gestured to the pack nurses. "But for now, the Luna is cleared to return to her private quarters. She needs clean air, good food, and enough rest."

From the second that the doctor walked out, Ryker didn't let her feet touch the clinic floor.

Despite her soft protests that she was perfectly capable of walking, he lifted her into his arms and carried her out of the medical wing to their private quarters.

All the guards along the corridor stood at attention, their eyes widening as they noticed the rare grin on their Alpha's face even despite what Dax had just done.

Once inside their bedroom, Ryker set her down on the edge of the four-poster bed with extreme care, as if she were made of fragile glass.

He immediately set to work making sure she was completely comfortable.

He pulled off her heavy leather riding boots, unzipped her jacket, and tossed the dust-covered gear onto a chair.

He stuffed three plush velvet pillows behind her back, adjusting the wool blanket around her waist until she was fully propped up.

"Ryker, seriously, I am fine," Lyra said, laughing as she watched him pace the room, his eyes scanning the space for any other potential discomfort. "The doctor said I’m healthy. You don't need to treat me like an invalid."

"You just survived a seventy-mile-an-hour motorbike crash while carrying my child, Lyra," Ryker stated firmly as he walked over to the wooden stove in the corner.

He threw two fresh pine logs onto the embers, stoking the heat until the room turned warm and cozy. "I am not letting you lift a single finger for the next forty-eight hours. I’ll bring the kitchen staff up here myself to handle your meals."

He walked back to the bedside, sitting on the mattress and taking her hand in his large palms.

He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against her stomach through the linen shirt, holding the embrace for a long, quiet minute.

"We’re safe now," Lyra whispered, stroking his jawline. "The Blood King is gone, and Dax just revealed everything he's been plotting. He's been the traitor all along."

Ryker’s face crumpled a little and he shook his head. "I allowed my love for my brother blind me all along. I'm glad he didn't hurt you due to my carelessness, I would never be able to forgive myself.”

"Hey, it's not your fault. We all trusted Dax and he betrayed us. It's not your blame to take. I'm just glad he's been exposed."

“He was really trying to run away with you?" Ryker sighed, “I never knew Dax was that obsessed."

Lyra looked down, “I tried to lie to myself all along. I made excuses for him hoping he'd one day find his mate and forget about me."

“But he did, and then he rejected her."

Lyra sat up, "Speaking of which. We have to let Rex know that Dax is…”

“No, she's too unstable, let's allow her to heal first."

“She's my friend, Ryker. I also want to share the news of our baby. Sfw deserves to know, I'm sure it will make her happy."

“I'm not allowing you near anyone or anything that can hurt you."

"But you'll be there, please,” Lyra begged, "I just want to see her.”

Ryker groaned and finally nodded. He knew he couldn't deny her anything.
