Rebirth
Back at the ritual spot, the hundreds of wolves stood frozen in awe. The bodies of the four alphas stayed standing in their circle, but their eyes glowed with an eerie golden light that seemed to look beyond this world. All around them, the old stones crackled with energy, sending sparks into the night air.
Suddenly, every wolf felt something shift inside them. A warmth spread through their bodies, linking them to each other in a way they'd never experienced before.
Without anyone leading them, all five packs tilted their heads back and started to howl. The sound rose from hundreds of mouths, merging into one voice that echoed across Lupinia. Wolves who had been enemies for generations now sang together as one pack.
Inside Malachor's realm, Akira and the five alphas felt the howl vibrate through their souls.
"The packs," Ethan whispered. "They're calling us home."
The seed of darkness that remained after Malachor's dissolution began to pulse, growing slightly bigger with each beat.
"We need to leave," Elara warned. "Now, before it regains strength."
The first Luna nodded. "The route is opening. Your bodies call to your souls."
Akira looked at the swirling mixture of light and dark around them. "What about the balance we made here? If we leave—"
"It will come with you," the first Luna said, touching Akira's face gently. "The true bond was never meant to stay hidden in this realm."
The howling grew louder, the pull on their souls stronger.
"It's time," Kael said, taking Akira's hand.
The five alphas made a protective circle around Akira as the swirling energy of light and shadow began to spiral around them like a tornado. The seed of darkness trembled, then shot toward them with scary speed.
"Watch out!" Caleb shouted, moving to block it.
But instead of attacking, the tiny fragment of pure darkness dove into the swirling energy, becoming part of the balance.
"Even darkness has its place in the cycle," Elara said with a knowing smile.
The tornado of energy spun faster, lifting them off the ground. Akira caught one last glimpse of her grandma and the first Luna watching them rise.
"Will I see you again?" she called out.
"We are always with you," Elara's words faded as the vortex swept them away.
At the ritual spot, the stones began to shake. Cracks formed in the ground, glowing with golden light. The wolves backed away nervously, but didn't break their circle.
Then, with a sound like thunder, the middle of the ritual site erupted in a column of blinding light. The wolves whined and ducked their heads, protecting their eyes from the glare.
When the light faded, six people stood at the center of the circle.
Akira and her five alphas had returned.
But they were changed.
Golden symbols glowed on their skin, making intricate patterns that connected one to another. On Akira's brow shone a crescent moon, while each alpha bore a different mark that seemed to pulse in time with hers.
Kael's sign was a mountain, bold and strong across his chest. Asher's was a flowing river, winding around his wrist. Caleb's was a shield, spread across his broad shoulders. Ethan's was a star, shining on his hand. Landon's was a key, wrapped around his wrist.
The wolves of all five packs stared in wonder at their transformed masters. Then, one by one, they dropped their heads to the ground in submission.
Ethan was the first to speak, his voice hoarse with emotion. "It worked."
"Malachor is gone," Kael confirmed, looking down at the golden mountain symbol on his chest with surprise.
"Not gone," Landon corrected, feeling his own glowing mark. "Transformed. The darkness is part of us now, but in balance with the light."
Asher turned in a slow circle, taking in the sight of all five packs bowing together. "We're one pack now. After all these generations of fighting."
Caleb laughed in surprise. "I never thought I'd see the day."
While the alphas marveled at the change, Akira stood silent at the middle. The power of the rite still flowed through her, filling her with light that threatened to overflow. She could feel every wolf in the circle, their hearts beating like echoes of her own. The link was beautiful but overwhelming.
"Akira?" Kael asked, noticing her silence. "Are you alright?"
She turned to him, her eyes shining so brightly they were almost white. "I can feel them all," she whispered. "Every dog, every heartbeat. So much..."
The golden crescent on her forehead flared brighter. The symbols on the alphas reacted, glowing in answer.
"Something's wrong," Ethan said, moving closer. "She's holding too much energy."
Akira's legs trembled beneath her. The power that had filled her during the ritual now seemed too vast for her body to hold. She reached out, her fingers finding Kael's arm.
"Help," she managed to say, before her legs gave way.
Kael caught her before she hit the ground, holding her against his chest. "Akira!"
The other alphas rushed to them, making a protective circle once more.
"She channeled too much power," Asher said, his clever mind running to understand. "The combined energy of five packs, all the past Lunas, and Malachor's transformation."
"What can we do?" Caleb ordered, his protective instincts flaring.
Ethan put his hand on Akira's forehead, his star symbol pulsing as he connected with her. "She's burning from within. The power has nowhere to go."
"Then let's take some of it," Landon offered. "We share the bond. We can share the load."
The five alphas joined hands around Akira's limp form. Their golden symbols brightened as they tried to draw away some of the overwhelming energy running through her.
For a moment, it seemed to work. The bright glow around Akira dimmed slightly, and her breathing became more regular.
Then, without warning, all their symbols flashed with blinding brightness. The wolves watching from the circle yelped in surprise as a wave of golden light washed over them.
When the light faded, Akira lay still in Kael's arms. Too still.
"Akira?" Kael's voice broke as he touched her face. "Akira, wake up."
Her skin was cool beneath his fingers. The golden circle on her forehead had faded to a faint outline.
"No," Ethan whispered, dropping to his knees beside them. "This can't be happening."
Caleb roared in disbelief, the sound making the wolves around them cower. "She can't be gone! Not after everything!"
Asher pressed his fingers to her wrist, looking desperately for a pulse. His usual confident face crumbled into fear. "I can barely feel her heartbeat."
Landon stood quiet, his mysterious eyes filled with tears as he watched the golden symbols on all their bodies begin to dim.
Around them, the wolves of all five packs—now one united pack—began to whine, feeling the distress of their leaders. Some lifted their muzzles to the sky and howled in sadness.
Kael held Akira closer, his tears falling onto her pale face. "Don't leave us," he begged. "We need you. I need you."
As the night darkened around the ritual site, the future that had seemed so bright just moments before now hung by the thinnest thread. The prophecy had been completed, the packs united, and Malachor transformed—but at what cost?
In Kael's arms, Akira's chest rose and fell in short breaths, each one weaker than the last. The link that connected her to her five mates flickered like a candle in the wind.
No one noticed the tiny seed of darkness that pulsed once beneath her skin, then disappeared.
