Chapter Forty-Nine
The forest edge was alive with the scent of pine and earth, but Rowan barely noticed. His focus was on the town, on Clara, on the pull that had been gnawing at him every second since leaving her. The rogues were still a threat, but nothing mattered more than seeing her, feeling her, holding her.
When he reached the coffee shop, the sight of Clara outside, brushing a strand of hair from her face and staring into the distance, made his chest tighten. She was radiant even in the soft glow of dusk, unaware of his approach.
“Clara,” he called, voice low but carrying, and her head snapped up.
Rowan crossed the distance in two long strides, his presence overwhelming, magnetic. Clara’s breath caught, heart pounding. “Rowan…” she whispered, relief and desire flooding her.
He closed the gap between them in an instant, hands on her face, thumbs brushing her cheeks as he pressed a heated kiss to her lips. It was urgent, claiming, desperate—the culmination of longing built over days apart. Clara melted against him, hands tangling in his hair, body pressing into his.
“You have no idea,” Rowan murmured against her lips, voice husky, “how much I’ve wanted you. How much I’ve needed you.”
Clara shivered, pulling him closer. “I’ve felt it too… every day,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I’ve missed you… and I’ve needed you too.”
The kiss deepened, slow and intense, igniting fire between them. Rowan’s hands roamed, memorizing every curve, every inch of her as if he had been starved for this connection. Clara gasped, heat pooling, every nerve alive with desire.
He pulled back slightly, forehead resting against hers, breath mingling. “We’ll have to be careful,” he murmured, though his hands never left her. “The rogues… they’re still out there. But right now… I need you.”
“I need you too,” Clara whispered, pressing closer, the ache of separation giving way to the thrill of reunion.
Rowan’s lips found hers again, slower this time, savoring, exploring, claiming. The world outside—the town, the forest, the lurking danger—faded as they lost themselves in each other. Desire and love intertwined, trust and passion blazing in every touch.
When they finally broke apart, gasping and flushed, Rowan’s hands held hers tightly. “You’re mine,” he said, eyes dark, intense. “Completely. Always.”
“And I’m yours,” Clara replied, certainty and longing in her voice. “Completely.”
For a moment, they simply held each other, letting the connection solidify, hearts racing, breaths mingling. The rogue threat was still out there, but together, they felt unstoppable. Their bond had deepened in separation, tested by longing and danger, and now—reunited—it was stronger than ever.
Rowan rested his forehead against hers, voice low and husky. “No more distance. Not if I can help it.”
Clara smiled, chest heaving. “I won’t let anything keep us apart either.”
And in that instant, the world felt right—danger lingering in the shadows, yes, but nothing could break the bond between them, nothing could dim the fire that had been building since the moment they met.
