Chapter 40
Chapter 40
Dawn had barely broken when Clara joined Rowan and the pack at the edge of the forest. Mist clung to the ground, curling around roots and rocks, giving the landscape an ethereal, almost otherworldly glow.
“Stay close,” Rowan instructed, his voice low but commanding. “Eyes open, instincts sharp. This isn’t training anymore.”
Clara’s pulse quickened, a mixture of fear and exhilaration surging through her. She felt Rowan’s presence beside her—steady, strong, protective—and it anchored her.
The pack moved silently, fluid and coordinated. Clara tried to match their rhythm, focusing on breathing, watching their cues, learning to anticipate movements. Every sense was heightened—the sound of rustling leaves, the faint snap of a twig, the subtle shifts in the forest’s energy.
“Remember what we practiced,” Rowan murmured, glancing at her. His hazel eyes held intensity and unspoken pride. “Trust yourself. And trust me.”
Clara nodded, heart hammering. She could do this. She had to do this.
Suddenly, a movement ahead caught Rowan’s attention—a rogue scouting the perimeter. Without warning, the attack began. The rogue lunged from the shadows, fast and aggressive.
Rowan reacted instantly, positioning himself between Clara and the danger. “Clara, move!” he commanded, hand gripping hers tightly.
Clara dodged instinctively, adrenaline sharpening her reflexes. The rogue’s speed was terrifying, but she felt Rowan’s presence beside her, guiding her subtly, his movements and energy protective and grounding.
The fight escalated quickly. Rowan engaged the rogue with lethal precision, powerful strikes and calculated blocks, while Clara kept close, moving with the pack’s rhythm. She stumbled at one point, and Rowan’s strong hand caught her wrist, pulling her behind him. Their proximity sent a jolt through her, fear mixing with desire.
“Good,” he whispered, eyes flashing with intensity. “Stay with me.”
Clara adjusted her footing, following him through the skirmish, anticipation and adrenaline coursing through her veins. She began to anticipate rogue movements, ducking, sidestepping, reacting with instincts she didn’t know she possessed.
When the last rogue finally retreated into the forest, silence returned. Clara’s chest heaved with exhaustion, but exhilaration tingled through her every nerve. Rowan turned to her, hands on her shoulders, searching her face.
“You did amazing,” he murmured, voice rough with pride and something deeper—desire, longing, and relief. “You kept your head. You trusted yourself.”
Clara smiled, panting but triumphant. “I… I couldn’t have done it without you,” she admitted, fingers brushing his hand.
His lips found hers in a slow, lingering kiss, taste and heat mixing with the rush of the mission. “You’re stronger than you think,” he murmured against her lips. “And I… I can’t get enough of you.”
Clara’s hands threaded through his hair, pulling him closer, heart hammering in time with his. The danger, the thrill, and their unspoken bond made the moment electric. For a fleeting second, the forest, the pack, and the rogue threats all vanished—they were just themselves, tethered together by trust, desire, and shared adrenaline.
When they finally broke apart, Rowan pressed a lingering kiss to her temple. “We’ll face whatever comes—together,” he said, voice low, protective, and intimate.
Clara leaned against him, feeling his strength and power. “Together,” she echoed, certainty and excitement in her voice.
The forest waited around them, alive with shadows and unseen threats, but Clara felt ready. With Rowan by her side, with the pack behind them, she was no longer just an observer. She was part of this world—and part of him.
