Chapter 42: Whispers in the Wood
The forest had always had a voice, but now it whispered Clara’s name.
She and Liam walked the winding trail past the edge of Black Hollow, venturing deeper than they had since the curse broke. The air was thick with early autumn fog, carrying the scent of damp moss and unseen rot. Trees stretched tall and gnarled overhead, their bark twisted like old scars.
They were following a lead or rather, a trail of symbols.
The crow’s parchment had not been the only sign. Since that morning, more had appeared: etched into tree trunks, scrawled on stone, burned into the bark by some unknown hand. Each bore the same symbol: the Rooted Eye.
Jonas had confirmed the location they were heading to once held an ancient grove, now long overgrown. Local legends called it The Listening Place.
It didn’t appear on any map.
Clara could feel it pulling at her, though guiding her like a compass spinning toward memory instead of metal.
They pushed through a curtain of hanging moss and emerged into a small clearing. At its center sat a stone altar, worn and cracked, overgrown with ivy and fungi. On either side, two massive trees loomed like sentinels, their trunks fused with ancient carvings that pulsed faintly in the dim light.
“This must be it,” Liam said.
Clara stepped forward slowly. Her boots crunched the leaves, but the sound faded as she crossed into the clearing. The wind stilled. The birds went silent.
She knelt before the altar, brushing moss away from its surface.
There beneath the grime was the same symbol once again.
And something else.
A handprint. Smaller than hers. Burned into the stone.
Clara touched it.
The world tilted.
She was standing in the same grove, but it was alive, lush and vibrant. The trees were younger, the altar unbroken. Around her, figures in bark-stitched robes chanted in a language she didn’t recognize.
One woman stood at the altar. Her face was familiar too familiar.
It was her own.
Except... not.
The woman’s eyes were darker, her posture regal. Her presence was magnetic. She held a dagger of bone and obsidian and raised it above her hand.
She spoke a single word “Remembrá.”
Then she drove the dagger into her palm, blood splashing onto the stone.
The grove trembled, the ground splitting beneath the altar.
Something below stirred.
The vision shattered.
Clara fell back with a gasp, heart pounding.
Liam caught her. “What happened?”
She looked at him, pale and shaken. “I saw them. The Order. And... I saw me. Or someone who looked like me.”
He frowned. “You think it’s a memory?”
“I don’t know. Maybe a past life. A relative. But she was performing a ritual. She called something awake.”
They both looked down at the altar.
Liam’s eyes scanned the surroundings. “Let’s not stay here longer than we need to.”
Clara hesitated. “We need to mark it. Get Jonas out here. Study it properly.”
But even as she said it, she could feel the place resisting. The wind returned, swirling leaves in odd, circular patterns. The trees creaked and groaned like they were waking from sleep.
A voice echoed in her mind not hers, not the woman’s from the vision, but older.
You opened the gate. Now you must follow the root.
Back in Black Hollow, the town was restless.
Children had been waking with night terrors. Livestock turned up dead without a scratch. The sky had turned blood-red for five minutes at sunset before snapping back to normal.
Jonas paced the church’s nave as Clara and Liam relayed what they'd seen.
“You’re sure it was the same symbol?” he asked.
Clara nodded. “It’s not just a sign it’s a seal. Or a map. They want me to find the next place.”
Jonas glanced toward his wall of notes. “We’ve been trying to trace bloodlines connected to the Order. If what you saw was an ancestor, it would explain why the visions keep targeting you.”
“So what then?” Liam asked. “She’s the heir to some lost druid cult that sealed ancient forest gods under the dirt?”
Jonas grimaced. “In Black Hollow? Wouldn’t be the weirdest thing.”
He turned toward a chart with three concentric circles drawn across a map of the surrounding area.
“These are convergence points places where magic was strongest during the height of the curse. One of them is the grove you found. But two others haven’t been investigated. Not fully.”
Clara leaned in. “Where are they?”
Jonas pointed to one deep in the western woods, near a collapsed cavern system.
“And the other?”
He hesitated.
“Underneath the old mayor’s mansion. The one that burned down forty years ago.”
Clara’s brows furrowed. “Didn’t that fire kill the whole family?”
“Except the daughter,” Jonas said. “She vanished. Name was Evelyn Morrell. Some said she was... different. There were rumors she spoke to the trees.”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “So what’s the plan?”
Clara looked down at the handprint symbol etched on her palm still faint, but glowing ever so slightly.
“We go to the mansion,” she said. “We follow the root.”
