Chapter 81 : Turn of Events

Veris spilled the potion on Aniya’s injury and a guttural scream cut through her lips. Her body jerked upward, her body stiff with pain. Her eyes still shut.

Ikrus sprang forward at the sound, his eyes wild with a threat of violence and too much worry that made his bones feel stiff. It took too much to keep himself still. To not lunge at Veris and rip him apart limb by limb.

Another part of him though, felt that Veris was healing her. After all, he knew that Ikrus had been serious about his threat.

Or was that part of him stupid?

Anita’s scream was short but it was still echoing in his ears, ringing over and over again in his mind, even as she now laid totally still on the bed.

What had Veris done to her?

What was happening?

Had he been a fool to let Veris anywhere around her?

By the moon, what was happening?!

Veris moved back quickly, watching the dark lines appear speedily across Aniya’s skin, spreading like a web around her cut.

He could feel Ikrus’s gaze on him, but he dared not look.

Anytime now.

The dark ink spread even more and that was when Ikrus saw it.

Rage rumbled in him, his voice more of a growl when he spoke finally. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!”

Ikrus slammed Veris against the wall, just at the moment Aniya’s scream cut through the room again. It ripped through the space like a blade. Too painful to be listened to, Ikrus's grip jerked away from Veris to block his ears from the sound. Veris did the same. Both of them instinctively crouching to shield themselves from whatever was happening.

The scream dissolved quickly into loud pants and coughs. Ikrus was the first one to stand, he started moving close to her but Aniya sat up, her hand on her cut, her hair over her face, as she bent to the side.

Black bile from her spilled to his feet and Ikrus froze.

Black… bile.

He had seen this before. Where had he seen this before? He couldn’t tell. All he could hear was Aniya coughing over and over again, throwing up more and more of that black bile.

It consumed him, so much so that he hadn’t even heard Veris as he staggered out of the room, muttering to himself over and over again three words, “something is wrong.”

Aniya dragged in a gasp and this time, when she forced her eyelids to open, they actually obeyed her.

She felt like she had been drowning in an abyss and by some miracle, she finally resurfaced. Every breath she dragged in felt like a privilege. Her body felt warm, and her abdomen throbbed with pain.

She looked around sharply to confirm that she wasn’t in the dungeon, that the witch wasn’t still struggling with her, that she was… that she was alive.

“Aniya?” She recognized that voice immediately as he stepped out of the bathroom. “You are—“

Aniya’s heart skipped a beat and the
words tumble quickly off her lips. “I will marry you!”
