73 - A Need
Chapter 73 : A Need

The silence did not help.

Nothing did actually.

Aniya paced around in the room, her mind filled with too many thoughts. Then she sat next to Arlo who was fast asleep on the bed. She sighed as she sank her fingers into her hair. Then sighed again.. and again.

If only she could just make her mind blank for now, she would.

But even while she soaked herself in the bathtub, she couldn’t stop thinking.

What was she to do now?

Why would he ask her to marry him after she had just tried to kill him?

What was the significance of this Joining Ceremony if it would guarantee nothing for her and her son?

Did he have any ulterior motives? Ikrus was blunt, he would have told her. But Ikrus was also acting strange, had his Priest friend pushed him to this?

What sane person would propose marriage to someone who had almost killed them?

Why would he even think that she would accept it? He had almost killed her too. He had even told her many times that he would.

No.

Everything just couldn’t change now because they had sex. But if that was it, it must be because of the bond. And if the bond could change everything for him so drastically, how sure was she that whatever she felt would be genuine and not the bond trying to manipulate things.

Ikrus’s explanation of the bond resurfaced in her mind and antagonized that thought but it still didn’t feel enough.

Feelings?!

Why would she even think of that when she was supposed to be focused on survival. Nothing about what Ikrus proposed couldn’t guarantee that for either of them!

Nonsense.

She stepped out of the bath in rage. Feeling even more confused and overwhelmed than when she had stepped in. A sense of hollowness lingered in her veins and she knew it was because of his feelings that he had pulled away from her. That part of him that had found a way into her and made a home of it.

Too quick.

Everything had happened too quickly and she needed time.

She got dressed hurriedly.

It didn’t matter why Ikrus was doing anything. What mattered was how she and her son would get out of this realm alive.

She wondered if her family back home were trying all they could to get to her and her son. Maybe that was the reason for all her strange dreams. Their efforts were probably ending in futility.

She sighed, finally dressed.

She needed a break.

She needed a friend.

Aniya found herself in front of Oana’s door.

Truly she needed a friend and though, sometimes, Oana did not feel fully like one, she was the closest she had to it here. Besides, she needed a friend that could tell her exactly what options she now had after yesterday’s event.

Had she not been the one to suggest her getting pregnant for Ikrus?

She would be so excited to hear about what had happened, she might just tell her all she had to know.

She would have to make sure to leave out the part of trying to kill Ikrus though. Oana would certainly not like that.

Her heart weighed heavily in her chest. Was this really the friend she needed right now?

Of course. It was logical. Not emotional. Only logical.

She knocked the door again, with Arlo now awake in her arms.

There was no answer.

Worried, Aniya tried to open the door but it was locked.

Oh, so there was no one in the room.

She turned away, her mind saying over and over again.

Logic.

Logic.

Logic.

But she was crumbling within. Scared. Overwhelmed. And as much as she wanted to remain in control. She really needed a friend.

So she found her legs going in the only direction she believed she could find him.

Syon.
