Chapter 66

Chapter 66
The Rising Flame

The moment the final heart fused into me, the chamber responded like a creature waking from slumber.
The obsidian walls shuddered, veins of molten silver pulsing outward in great arcs of light. The air thickened with heat, not the scorching kind, but something alive, sacred. The forge was no longer dormant. It was awake, aware, and for the first time in centuries… listening.
I gasped, staggering back as a wave of energy coursed through me. Nyra surged forward in my mind, howling, not in pain, but in awe.
"It knows you," she whispered. "The forge recognizes your soul. You are its spark reborn."
Kaelen rushed to my side, steadying me with strong arms. “Riley? Are you...?”
“I’m fine,” I breathed, though my body trembled from the sheer pressure coiling beneath my skin. “It’s… inside me. All of it. The knowledge, the flame, the weight.”
His eyes searched mine. “You changed.”
I looked down. My arms shimmered faintly, marked with glowing sigils like living tattoos that pulsed with each heartbeat. My hair crackled softly, embers lacing through the strands.
Raya stepped forward, awe widening her eyes. “You’ve bonded to the primal flame. The final heart wasn’t just a seal, it was a conduit. You’ve inherited the Flame Concord’s legacy.”
Darek gave a low whistle. “Well, if we weren’t already targets, we sure as hell are now.”
Suddenly, the forge chamber pulsed. A deep thrum echoed through the walls, rising in frequency until it resembled a heartbeat.
Raya reached out, placing her hand on the central table. “It’s sending a signal. A call.”
“To what?” Sena asked warily.
“To the surface,” Raya replied, voice distant. “It’s... syncing with the ley lines. Realigning the wards around the mountain. But...”
Before she could finish, the ground trembled beneath our feet. A roar echoed through the stairway we’d descended, followed by a sickening crunch of rock.
“Above!” Kaelen shouted. “We’re not alone!”
The guardian’s eyes, dormant since the flame awakened, flared wide. “Intrusion detected. Threat proximity: critical. Priority: protect the bearer.”
“No,” I said, grabbing its stone-carved arm. “You’re already too weak.”
It knelt, fire leaking from the cracks in its chest. “This form cannot hold. But I can delay.”
“Just long enough,” Kaelen growled, drawing his blade. “We get out of here. We regroup. And then we stand.”
Together, we bolted up the spiral steps, the roar of the guardian’s voice echoing behind us like thunder.
“For the flame… I hold.”
We emerged into the lava-lit sanctum just as the shockwave hit.
Stone cracked. Dust cascaded from the ceiling. Light rippled unnaturally through the air as runes along the chamber walls flickered and died. The Order had found us. And they weren’t knocking, they were breaking down the door.
Outside the collapsed seal chamber, magic flared, dark, sickly green tendrils weaving between the rocks as if searching.
“We need to move, now!” Raya shouted.
We sprinted through the outer ward tunnels, Kaelen and Darek in front, clearing debris. I felt the forge’s rhythm in my chest, guiding me through hidden paths the others couldn’t see.
At a fork in the passage, I stopped.
“This way!” I cried, veering right. “The older tunnels. They’ll get us to the outer terraces.”
Sena glanced at me. “How do you know that?”
I tapped my temple. “The forge… showed me.”
We reached a massive archway, carved in the shape of two dragons intertwining. Behind it, moonlight glimmered faintly. The surface.
Kaelen helped push the stone door open. “Almost there.”
But as we stepped through, a shadow dropped from above.
A cloaked figure landed in front of us, staff raised.
“Flamekeeper,” he hissed. “The Concord dies with you.”
Kaelen surged forward, blade clashing with the staff. Sparks flew. Another figure emerged behind the first, then another.
“More coming!” Darek barked, bracing his back against the stone wall.
Raya conjured a barrier as I called flame to my hands. “We can’t hold here forever.”
Nyra growled in my mind. “Let me out.”
I hesitated. “If I shift now...”
“You’ll burn them.”
“Exactly.”
My body ignited with silver fire as I shifted into my wolf form, larger, more radiant than ever before. My paws cracked the stone, my eyes glowing like stars.
Kaelen shouted to the others. “Cover her!”
I lunged.
Flame and fang met shadow and steel. I tore through their lines, scattering the front wave. Kaelen followed, slashing through their staggered ranks.
But for every one we downed, more came.
“We can’t win this here,” Raya shouted. “They’re trying to bottleneck us!”
I turned, flame still dripping from my fur. “Then we break through.”
I launched myself at the wall beside the archway, flame erupting from my claws. The stone cracked, then collapsed.
Sunlight flooded in.
We broke through to the mountainside, a narrow ledge clinging to the face of the cliff.
Far below, nestled in the forest shadow, was the academy.
But between us and it… a force of cloaked enemies was already gathering.
Kaelen cursed. “They brought an army.”
I shifted back, panting. “We’re out of time.”
Raya touched my shoulder. “You’re the Flamekeeper now. What do we do?”
I stared down at the enemy. At the smoke curling into the sky. At the forge behind us, now pulsing with the first beat of a new era.
“We make our stand,” I said. “We protect the forge. We protect each other. And we show them exactly what the Flame Concord left behind.”
