Chapter 40 The Basement

Chapter 40 The Basement
Angela

Fear, that's all I feel. I don't remember ever feeling like this in my life. Even with everything that happened in my past, I've never experienced this feeling this bad.

I don't fear for my life though, that stopped a long time ago. A time when I had resigned myself to abuse, not that I had much of a choice.

It's funny though, I had given up on life although I kept on going, then one night everything changes. Now I want to live, now I can't wait to go to sleep and wake up.

I will forever be grateful to Sergio for giving me hope that there's always a better tomorrow somewhere.

But at the moment I'm not grateful to him. I fear for him. I fear for the child that's clinging to me with unshed tears. It's heartbreaking that I don't know how to soothe her when I need sighing myself.

I can't think of anything else right now except that I hope my husband is ok wherever he is. We can't hear anything in this room, only our breathing. I've tried to stop breathing and listen but nothing.

We're basically in a vault, one that apparently recognises my fingerprints even though I've never been in here before. But then again, I haven't been inside all the rooms in this humongous house.

I wish I knew what was going on outside. I know I can walk right out, but I don't want to defy my husband. I know he kept us in here for our safety, I just wish he had stayed with us.

It's been at least an hour and there's still no communication from outside. Angie has finally fallen asleep again. I put her on the single bed to at least sleep peacefully.

I guess the life she used to live at least prepared her for something like this, but I know this is one other thing that will cause her to have trauma later on in life. I can't imagine how much more therapy she's going to need because after this incident I know I will need one.

For a basement this room looks clean, it makes me wonder if anyone has ever been in here before. I hope we won't have to sleep in here or stay longer than twelve hours.

With brown walls and what looks like epoxy flooring, I wonder if they did it this way so that it's easier to clean. It's fooling to say the least, because it does not look like a basement.

I bet it if some equipment and furniture could be brought in here and maybe change the paint and make it something manly, maybe make a man cave it would look very good.

I'm not an artist, but I've read and perused a lot of home decor books to actually Invision the room beyond this. It would feel a lot less stifling if it looked less like a basement.

Maybe I could talk Sergio into making it less like this, especially if there will be other instances like this one we're facing.

I don't know how long it's been since we've been here, which is why I'm glad when I hear the click of the door before it opens. I run across the room when I see Sergio walk through the door and hug him tight.

"Is it over? Are you okay? Is everyone okay?" I pull back from the hug to look him over.
"Yes, it's over and everyone is okay." He answers me pulling me back into his arms.

From his voice I know there's something wrong, although I can't pinpoint what it is exactly.

"Are you sure?" I ask him just to be sure if it was not my imagination.
"Yes, love. I'm sure. Now let's get you guys out of this basement. The clean up crew is about to arrive."

He pulls back from me and walks towards the bed and picks up our daughter then takes my hand and we walk out the door.

"The house is a bit of a mess, so we will be going away for a day or two and come back here. I've already had our things packed."
"Did you get the laptop?"
"Yes baby."

The house is indeed a mess when we walk through it heading outside. I notice it's morning too. The Sun is shining bright.

"What time is it?" I ask, the basement was too dark and I don't remember seeing a clock anywhere inside.
"It's almost ten. You were in there for about six hours." He tells me.

I swear time moved faster, although it seemed like it was dragging its feet. I guess the stress of what was going on kept my mind too busy for me to notice the time moving.

"Have the police came yet?" I ask because although it's clean, i doubt that with the blast that woke is up, there's no way they didn't come.
"Came and went as fast as they could." He tells me.
"And did you get yourself checked out?"

He thought I wouldn't notice him limping, he's trying not to show it but I can see it. My husband does not Jay walk, I know how he walks. Like a confident Prince who knows the world belongs to him.

"What do you mean?" He asks me, acting dumb.
"That's not how you usually walk. Did you get checked out?" I ask again and he sighs.
"It's just the flesh wound, but yes I did. The paramedics were also here."

He may not admit it, but i know he's still in pain. I wonder what exactly happened but I'm scared to find out.

"Did the police at least get the people that were here?" I ask as we get into the car.

He's silent for a while and I wonder if he's going to answer me. I know what my husband does, as much as it scares me, I can't do anything about it except accept it.

"No, they didn't have a chance." He finally answers without a further explanation.

There could only be two explanations; Sergio's people could have killed them all before the police came, which I hope is what happened. Or those people escaped, which will be bad because it means they could still come back.

With the car moving, sleep finally catches up to me. I move closer to Sergio and take his hand in mind. I'm used to sleeping next to him and feel comfortable with him next to me.

I guess it's a good thing that Angie has a car seat and the car is not cramped up.
