Chapter 36 The Unspoken Wish

The Lighthouse was finally at peace, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the comfortable sound of family chatter. The curse was done, the town clock was silent (though still showing the wrong time), and the Indigo Confession Stone lay on the kitchen table, a heavy, cold monument to a healed wound.
Evan, however, couldn't shake the question of Lila's final, unspoken wish. The silence had been about the Original Keeper's regret, but Lila’s sacrifice was about selfless love. Surely, she would have left a small, personal request for the people she cared about.
“She saved the town with a joke, Evan,” Cass pointed out, now leaning back comfortably on the porch swing, her bandaged leg propped up. “Maybe her final wish was just for us to finally laugh. That’s a good wish, right?”
“It is excellent from a sociological standpoint, Cass, but incomplete from a narrative one,” Evan countered, pacing the length of the porch, his memory-blank mind still wrestling with the problem. “Lila was a linguist. She used language precisely. She used stone for the ultimate truth, and paper for the final instruction to Father. There must be a third, non-material request, filed in a symbolic location.”
“A symbolic location… of Lila’s?” M. Cole mused, stepping onto the porch with a large, warm slice of apple pie for everyone. “Lila was not fond of ceremony. She liked things that were quiet, comfortable, and used for simple tasks.”
Jonas, sitting beside M. Cole, nodded. “She spent all her time at the Lighthouse because she was hiding the joke. I only ever watched from the outside. Cass would know where Lila went to disappear.”
Ben, perched on the swing next to Cass, piped up immediately. “Her reading corner,” Ben said immediately. “In the library. The Keeper side of the house. The one with the broken floorboard that always squeaks when you step on it.”
Evan stopped pacing. The idea of the squeaking floorboard, a sonic anomaly in an otherwise silent home, immediately appealed to his musician's brain.
“The Squeak. A perfectly placed, localized auditory distortion,” Evan murmured, his eyes lighting up. “It is a coded signal. It’s the sound of Attention to the Mundane.”
The small Lighthouse library was on the third floor, a cozy, dust-scented room filled with old charts, nautical manuals, and Lila’s extensive collection of classical novels.
Evan, Cass, Jonas, M. Cole, and Ben all filed into the small room. Evan immediately went to the corner Ben indicated, near an ancient velvet armchair. He placed his foot precisely where Ben pointed.
SQUEAK.
The sound was sharp, high-pitched, and familiar. The sound of a tiny, ongoing structural imperfection.
Evan knelt, prying up the loose board. Beneath it, nestled in the dust and cobwebs, wasn't a note, or a second stone, but a single, perfectly ordinary object: a well-worn, dog-eared copy of a children's book.
The title was familiar, something they had all read many times: "The Little Lighthouse Who Couldn't Sleep."
Jonas recognized it immediately. “That was Lila’s favorite book as a child. She loved the drawings of the tiny, worried Lighthouse.”
Evan opened the book. It was filled with beautiful, hand-drawn pencil illustrations of a small, anxious Lighthouse who was terrified of turning on his light because he was worried about what the ships would think of his beam.
“There are no words written on the pages,” Evan noted, flipping through them rapidly. “No annotations, no hidden codes, no scribbles.”
M. Cole took the book, her eyes misty. “She loved this book because she said it was about how the light is scared of the dark, just like people are scared of the truth.”
Ben pointed to the final page, where the Little Lighthouse finally turns on its light, and the ships cheer. “Look at the drawing, Evan. She made a change.”
Evan looked closely at the illustration. In the original version, the Little Lighthouse’s beam was straight and white. Lila had subtly, carefully colored it in with two distinct, alternating colored pencils: Indigo and a vibrant Celery Green.
“She approved the light sequence,” Evan whispered, understanding it at last. “Not for me but for the Lighthouse.”
“That’s so like her,” Cass murmured, wiping a tear from her eye. “She didn’t leave a note saying ‘change the light to this.’ She left a drawing in a children’s book for someone who would understand the absurdity.”
“But that’s still just the light, Cass,” Evan insisted, his brow furrowed. “That confirms the how, but not the why. What was the core, personal wish?”
He looked at the drawing again, tracing the alternating colors. He noticed something else. On the opposite page, where the printed text thanked the reader for listening to the story, Lila had added one final, tiny pencil drawing next to the author’s signature.
It was a small, perfectly detailed drawing of a single, intricate music box key.
Jonas looked at the key and gasped. “That’s the key to the Bell Tower organ! The small, ornate one that only Lila ever used! The one that was lost when she died!”
The Bell Tower, built by the Original Keeper, wasn’t just a base for the curse; it also housed a small, magnificent pipe organ designed to be played during services. Lila, a talented musician, had been the only one who played it in the last decade.
“The music box key,” Evan whispered, his analytical mind now in high-speed pursuit. “It’s the key to the Original Sound, the one Lila never wanted to be silenced. The curse demanded silence, but the organ held the true rhythm of Willow Lane.”
“But the key was lost,” M. Cole said sadly. “We searched everywhere after she passed.”
Evan held up the drawing. “It’s not just a drawing of the key, Mother. It’s a diagram. Lila was showing us where she hid the key. Look at the lines around the drawing.”
The small pencil lines were not random doodles. They were precise, coded directions, using nautical symbols Lila had learned from Jonas's charts.
Evan quickly translated the symbols: “The key is located four steps North of the Bell’s shadow at midnight, buried beneath the oldest stone of the causeway, marked by the lowest point of the high tide.”
The Bell’s shadow. At midnight. The time of all their recent chaos.
“She hid the key where the curse would always be strongest, because she knew the only way to break the curse was to play the organ again,” Elara realized. “The Bell demanded silence, but Lila wanted music.”
Ben's face alight with excitement, he looked at Evan. “You’re the musician,” Ben said, excited. “You can play it, if Cass lets you.”
Cass nodded once. “If the Light accepts the song, I’ll open the Tower.”
Evan, however, felt a wave of profound uncertainty wash over him. “But I don’t remember Lila’s music. I don’t remember anything I composed here. I have no memory of the rhythm, the style, or the sheet music. If I play the wrong song, if I play the wrong rhythm, the Bell could reactivate.”
Cass squeezed his arm, her eyes shining with absolute belief. “The curse is broken, Evan. The Original Keeper is satisfied. This is about Lila now. She gave you the Indigo and Celery Green. She gave you the joke. She gave you the key. She gave you the rhythm of absurdity. You don’t need the old sheet music. You just need to play a song that sounds exactly like a family argument.”
Evan looked down at the tiny, intricate drawing of the music box key, then out at the distant Bell Tower. The final, unspoken request was to replace the silence with a song. But he had to compose the song of Willow Lane, a song about celery soup, misplaced gloves, and a lighthouse that was afraid of the dark from scratch, with only his new, empty memory to guide him.
At midnight, Evan would dig up the key but only Cass could open the Bell Tower. And together, they would find out whether Lila’s final wish was music… or one last test of trust.
