Chapter 10 The Weight of a Lie
Some truths aren’t lost to time, they’re hidden on purpose, waiting for the one person brave enough to uncover them.
Cass knelt by the open cabinet, the scent of dust and old sea salt strong in her nostrils. Her fingers, still numb with cold, hovered inches above the dark bundle wrapped tightly in oilcloth. Beneath the frantic pace of her heart, a quiet, insistent voice urged her forward. Jonas Cole, sitting just ten feet away, was the man who had abandoned his son's dreams for the tyranny of duty. If he was hiding something here, in this temporary, shared shelter, it was undoubtedly a truth that needed to be uncovered.
Evan was still struggling to light the first pieces of kindling in the rusted stove, his movements stiff from the cold and the pain in his ankle. His focus was entirely on the immediate, desperate need for heat. Jonas watched him, not helping, but his gaze was heavy, burdened with a silent, critical judgment that Evan felt even without looking up. The emotional atmosphere was thick and poisonous.
Cass knew she couldn't risk a full inspection now. She needed to be subtle, prioritizing the essential task of building the fire. The shelter was their first survival priority. The truth could wait five minutes, but the cold could not.
She carefully moved the bundle aside, pushing it deep into the back corner of the cabinet. Her fingers lingered on the shape of it, hard, rectangular, but with an odd, asymmetrical lump that didn't fit the profile of a standard generator part. She grabbed a handful of the dry driftwood and pine needles. The wood was brittle, old, and perfect for catching fire quickly.
"We need the stovepipe vent open, Evan," Cass said, raising her voice slightly to break the heavy silence between the two men. "The smoke will choke us otherwise."
Evan looked up, grateful for the simple, concrete direction. "I'll check the damper," he replied, pushing himself up carefully. He winced as his weight settled on his injured ankle.
Jonas watched his son's struggle without comment, though his eyes followed every painful, labored movement. He took another slow sip from his thermos, his expression unchanging, a mask of stone.
"It's on the side, near the floor," Cass instructed, placing the wood in the stove. "It's rusted shut, probably. You’ll need to kick it."
"Great," Evan muttered, a dry, dark humor returning to his voice. "Another opportunity to injure myself further. I'm going to need a full body cast before sunrise."
He bent down and delivered a swift, powerful kick to the rusted damper plate. With a screech of metal that was louder than the distant wind, the plate sprang open, sending a puff of soot into the air.
"Perfect," Cass said, lighting a pine needle with a match and pushing it into the kindling. The wood caught almost instantly, a small, courageous yellow flame beginning to dance in the dark stove. The tiny sound of the wood crackling was the first truly hopeful sound they had heard all night.
As the flame grew, Cass used the small moment of distraction to quickly glance at Jonas. He was staring intently at the stove, his face illuminated by the flickering light, his eyes distant, lost in his own past. He wasn't watching the cabinet.
"Thank you, Father," Evan said, his voice surprisingly formal, the simple act of setting the damper feeling like a small truce.
"The wind will feed the chimney now," Jonas conceded, his voice grudging. "It's the only useful thing that hurricane does. It creates a strong draft."
"He built the stove himself, you know," Cass whispered to Evan, leaning closer as she added a larger piece of driftwood. "Years ago, for the train workers who had to stay overnight during the winter."
Evan just shook his head, a gesture of weary, profound sadness. "He built a warm place for strangers to wait. He never built one for his family."
The heat was beginning to radiate outward, a slow, gentle push against the deep cold. Evan sighed, sinking down onto a dusty wooden bench, carefully positioning his throbbing ankle. He put the guitar case next to him, treating it like a fragile, precious child.
"So, the light keeper's generator," Evan said, turning his attention back to his father. "Did you fix it? The main one?"
Jonas shook his head. "No. I brought the new part, but I needed to wait for the rain to let up to hike to the Sentinel. That cliff path in this weather is suicide. I told your mother I would be here at the station until dawn. Safer than being caught halfway up the rocks with the new transmission coil."
"And she let you go without telling me the light was at risk?" Evan asked, the question laced with a fresh wave of resentment. "She knew I would jump the first train back."
"She knows your dreams come first, Evan," Jonas said, a rare, momentary softening in his voice. "She didn't want you to trade the one life for the other again. She always knew you'd come back eventually, but she didn't want it to be because of duty. She wanted it to be because you chose it."
"But I did choose duty," Evan confessed, the words tasting bitter. "I chose to come back for her, to help her. I gave up the scholarship, the music, the momentum, all for the Lighthouse. And you two still conspire to make me feel like I didn't save anything."
Cass felt the air grow heavy with the sheer volume of his unspoken pain. She knew he was talking about the life he had truly sacrificed, his photography and the emotional debt he felt to his mother.
"Duty is not a choice, son," Jonas countered, his voice returning to its rigid, gravelly tone. "It's the cost of living on this coast. You either accept the light, or the sea swallows you whole."
Evan closed his eyes, leaning his head against the cold brick wall. He couldn't fight the immovable wall of his father's belief. He just wanted the silence to return, the kind of quiet that allowed him to hear his own thoughts, not the loud, accusing sound of his father's principles.
Cass watched the exchange, her mind whirling. The lighthouse, the music, the photography, it was all tied up in duty versus freedom. And Jonas, the keeper of duty, was hiding something in a cloth bundle.
The fire was now blazing steadily, filling the small room with genuine, life-giving warmth. Jonas turned slightly, his back to the cabinet, leaning into the heat. Evan had succumbed to exhaustion, his head resting against the wall, his breathing evening out into a heavy, deep sleep. The strain of the storm, the injury, and the confrontation had taken its toll.
This was Cass’s chance.
Moving with the smooth, silent grace she had learned from years of climbing the lighthouse spiral, Cass returned to the cabinet. The heat was now intense enough to make the room comfortable, and the flickering light of the fire made the lantern unnecessary, so she set it on the floor.
She knelt slowly, painfully aware of the smallest sounds, the crackling wood, the distant shriek of the wind, the heavy, rhythmic breathing of Evan and Jonas.
She reached her hand deep into the cabinet's corner, feeling around the dry wood until her fingers found the oilcloth bundle. It was about the size of a small book, and heavy.
She pulled it out, resting it on her thigh, keeping it shielded from Jonas’s view by the open cabinet door. The oilcloth was old and stiff, tied tightly with coarse, fraying twine. It took several painful, slow minutes for her to work the knot loose.
The moment the cloth was unwrapped, the inner contents were revealed.
It wasn't a mechanical part. It wasn't a journal.
It was a small, crudely carved wooden toy. It was the miniature replica of the Sentinel lighthouse, painted bright white with a faded red top. The wood was smooth, worn down by years of constant handling, its paint chipped in numerous places. It was a toy that spoke of a very specific, happy childhood.
Cass felt a strange, quiet certainty settle over her. She knew exactly what this was. She looked at the bottom of the carving. In small, blocky letters, carved with a careful, hesitant hand, was the name: EVAN.
Cass remembered the story Mara had told her. When Evan was seven, he had carved this toy himself, his first attempt at carpentry, giving it to his father, Jonas, as a birthday gift. The relationship between father and son had been good then, before the sailing accident, before the silence. Jonas had always kept it proudly on his desk. But Evan grew believing his father had deliberately discarded the last physical proof of their affection.
Then, ten years ago, when Evan decided to leave Willow Lane for his music, he and Jonas had had a terrible argument. Jonas, in his quiet fury, had told Evan he had lost the carving, that it had fallen into the tide and been swept away. It was Jonas’s final, cruel rejection of Evan’s new path. Evan had left the next morning, believing his father had deliberately discarded the last physical proof of their affection.
And here it was, perfectly preserved, wrapped in protective oilcloth, hidden not from the storm, but from Evan.
Jonas Cole hadn’t lost the memory of his son; he had hidden it, using the lie of the lost toy to reinforce the emotional wall between them.
A sudden, sharp movement broke the silence. Evan, awakened by the sudden loss of adrenaline and the warmth of the stove, stirred. He stretched, his eyes still heavy with sleep, and then he blinked, looking up at his father.
Jonas was looking back at him, a flicker of something terrible and sorrowful in his eyes.
And then Jonas looked beyond Evan, across the room, straight at Cass.
Cass sat frozen by the cabinet, the wooden lighthouse carving, the proof of Jonas's ten-year deception, resting open in her lap. The firelight caught the white paint and the faded red dome. She knew, with immediate, shattering certainty, that Jonas had seen what she was holding.
Jonas didn’t speak.
He didn’t move.
He only looked at the carving in Cass’s hands, as if it were something that had finally escaped him.
The fire crackled between them.
Evan slept on, unaware that the lie that sent him away was burning quietly in the room.
