Chapter 116
"I'll be right outside," Ioannis promised as Ellie settled onto the bed, her dark eyes still fixed on Micha through the open doorway. "If you need anything at all, just call."
Ellie nodded, though her expression remained guarded. "You won't separate us while I sleep? You promise?"
"I promise," Ioannis said, the pendant warming against her skin as she made this vow. "Micha will be right there when you wake up."
Ellie's eyelids were already drooping as she arranged herself on the bed, positioned so she could see directly into Micha's room. Violet remained tucked against her chest, the purple wolf's soft sounds continued, gentle and rhythmic like a lullaby designed specifically for her. Within moments, her exhaustion finally won against her vigilance, her breathing deepening as she surrendered to sleep.
Ioannis stepped back from the doorway, careful to move quietly. The pendant returned to a comfortable warmth against her skin as she watched Lucas settle more firmly in his chair, Shadow clutched to his chest as he maintained his promised vigil over Micha.
"They're remarkable," Luna Harvey murmured as they moved into the corridor. "Especially the girl. The tactical awareness she displays, the protective instincts toward the younger ones, I've never seen anything like it in a child that age."
"She's been their protector," Ioannis agreed, her voice barely above a whisper. "I suspect for longer than just this escape attempt."
Nickolas joined them, his storm-grey eyes reflecting the same mixture of admiration and fury Ioannis felt flowing through their bond. "The older fracture the healers noted, that wasn't from their escape. That's an injury that's months old, possibly longer."
"Punishment, most likely," Luna Harvey said, her elegant features hardening with controlled rage. "For some perceived infraction at the facility."
The pendant cooled against Ioannis's skin. What kind of monsters would break a child's bones as punishment? Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's protective fury building like gathering storm clouds.
"We need to accelerate the extraction plan," he said, his voice carrying the calm authority that had always steadied Ioannis in moments of crisis. "Now that we have firsthand accounts of conditions inside from three different perspectives."
Luna Harvey nodded, her storm-grey eyes, so like her son's, darkening with determination. "The strategy council has already been notified. Federico is preparing a briefing based on what we've learned from Lucas, and will update it with any additional information from Ellie and Micha once they're rested enough to share."
"Ellie won't volunteer information easily," Ioannis observed, recalling the girl's careful assessment of everyone she'd encountered. "She's been conditioned to view adults as threats."
"With good reason," Nickolas said, his voice hardening despite his controlled expression. Through their bond, Ioannis felt his tactical mind already formulating approaches to gather intelligence without causing further trauma. "We'll need to be patient, earn her trust gradually."
"The toys are helping," Ioannis noted, thinking of how even the fiercely independent Ellie had found comfort in Violet's presence. "They provide connection without pressure."
Luna Harvey's expression softened slightly. "I've never seen anything quite like their response to those plush wolves. Lucas, especially, speaks to Shadow as if the toy is a living companion."
"In a way, they are companions," Nickolas observed, his tactical assessment evident in his focused expression. "Designed to respond to the children's emotional states, to provide comfort when human-oriented programming," Nickolas continued. "But they also respond to the wolf nature these children have been forced to suppress."
The pendant's warmth spread across Ioannis's chest as she considered the implications. These toys were doing more than gathering intelligence; they were helping reawaken parts of these children that had been chemically suppressed for years.
"The healers are analysing blood samples from all three children," Luna Harvey explained, her voice dropping lower. "Preliminary results confirm what we found in Lucas, a compound designed to inhibit the emergence of wolf traits. The good news is that it appears to require regular administration. Without continued dosing, their natural wolf instincts should gradually reassert themselves."
Hope bloomed in Ioannis's chest at this confirmation. The pendant pulsed gently against her skin as she glanced back toward the healing chambers where the children slept.
"How long until their wolves fully emerge?" she asked.
"Difficult to say," Luna Harvey replied. "It depends on how long they've been suppressed, their age when suppression began, and individual physiological factors. Lucas is showing the fastest recovery. We've detected brief flashes of eye-glow when he's emotionally stimulated."
Nickolas nodded, his expression thoughtful. "That's consistent with what we observed in his interactions with Shadow. The toy seems to be accelerating the process by stimulating instinctive responses."
"We should ensure Ellie and Micha have their companions with them constantly," Ioannis suggested, the patterns connecting more clearly in her mind. "If the toys are helping reconnect them with their suppressed wolves..."
"Already arranged," Luna Harvey confirmed. "The healers have been instructed to treat the plush wolves as therapeutic necessities, not mere comfort objects."
Federico approached from the end of the corridor, his tablet in hand and expression focused. The pendant cooled slightly as Ioannis noted the tension in his shoulders; something had happened.
"Forgive the interruption," he said, inclining his head respectfully toward Luna Harvey. "But we've received an update from the surveillance team monitoring the facility. There's been increased activity in the last hour, vehicles arriving, personnel in tactical gear entering the main building."
The pendant turned ice-cold against Ioannis's skin. Through their bond, she felt Nickolas's tactical mind immediately shifting to high alert, calculating possibilities and threats.
"They've discovered the children are missing," he said, his voice carrying that deadly calm that always emerged in crisis. "And they're mobilising response teams."
"Our perimeter security has been doubled," Federico assured them, his fingers moving across his tablet. "And we've implemented communication blackout protocols to prevent any electronic tracking."
"The children will panic if they sense a threat," Ioannis said, touching the pendant that remained cold against her throat. "Especially Ellie, she's been anticipating recapture since the moment we found them."
